Title: What does Fuel Cost in your Neighborhood?
Post by: clean on June 18, 2019, 11:43:40 AM
I have been out of town. I visited Florida last week (to see my parents) and I believe that I filled up for $2.53 a gallon.

I have returned to my home area and I filled up for $2.19.

What are you paying for gasoline these days?

It was $2.26 when I went to Costco earlier today.  Other stations are $2.45 and up.

I filled up Tuesday when I got home from my trip (at $2.19), and then on my way to work yesterday saw gas drop to $2.10!

We're at $2.75/gallon here.

prices are up a quarter.  I had to fill up today and the cheapest I could find was $2.35.  Not too long ago the price was closer to $2.10.

What are you seeing for gas prices near July 4?

Does the potential/future storm in the gulf already factor into my local fuel price?
Prices went up a dime!  now 2.45

I am driving to the airport in another (cheaper) city about 150 miles away shortly, and I needed to top off to get there.

I wonder what prices are in Florida?  Im sure that Ill post after I get there!

What are prices in your area?

Visiting my parents.

$2.45 in rural south Florida.

Has Barry bumped up prices in your area?

I think it was Hurricane Barry, anyway. Prices today were $2.69  That is up a bit in less than 48 hours!!

FLORIDA Fuel Price 'scam'?  $4.58!!  (and premium was over $5 a US Gallon!)

I was near the Orlando Airport yesterday looking for gas to fill up the rental car.  I missed a turn by one block and ended up pulling into something called Sun "something".  There were half a dozen people fueling up, and I was about to put gas in the tank and I saw the price. At first I thought it was a mistake on the pump, but I noticed the sign in front and it was well over $4 a gallon!

I got out of there fast and made my way one more block further down to a WaWa (dont know how you spell it as we dont have them in my part of the country).  There the gas was 'only' $2.78 or so.

Why would ANYONE pay almost twice as much for a gallon of gas only one block further down?

Anyone ever  hear of stations such as that... Sun "something?"

Have you ever seen a similar thing near the airport rental car returns?

Clean, was it ethanol-free, perhaps?  That adds quite a bit to the price - but I don't think nearly $2.  I'll pay more attention next time I see one.

In other news, the $0.25 increase due to Barry has mostly subsided.
Title: Re: What does Fuel Cost in your Neighborhood?
Post by: clean on July 30, 2019, 03:26:39 PM
I dont know if it was ethanol free or not, and I m not near there to check!  In my local area, ethanol free adds some, but not nearly double the price of the 10% ethanol blend.

I checked - it only adds about 50 cents here.  It might well have been due to the location + taking advantage of tourists who are short on time & don't know the area well.

We were travelling in Europe, which was fun, plus all the prices for things are in made-up numbers! So in Norway I bought gas for something like 15 kroner a liter, which was made all the easier by the fact I wasn't doing the conversion in my head.

The reason I wasn't doing the conversion is that I knew that was about US$6.20 a gallon or -- more frighteningly for me, since I spend Canadian dollars -- CDN$9.00 a gallon.

One wonders whether tariffs on trade with China will affect these prices as well.

When you consider that the pumps, hoses and other supporting products were probably made in China, not to mention the minimart having to make up some profit margin on lower sales of Chinese made/ingredient items in the store, and general inflation caused by higher prices on all consumer goods putting pressure on higher wages...

Yes, Chinese tariffs probably will affect these prices.

What a difference a day makes!  Yesterday gas was $1.94 near my house and today it is $2.09 at all of the stations with that brand!  Fortunately, today i was below a 1/4 tank and filled up at a different branded station for $1.99.

Have you seen a marked increase or decrease in the last few days?

And for you wood burners, with winter past its first month (almost) is the price of wood going down or up?

Of course!  I filled up yesterday and today gas is down 7 cents more!

CNBC reported that the Russians and OPEC are in discussions to control the price, but that they may not get a deal and oil COULD be in the $30s tomorrow ! That would be good for oil consumers, not so good for the oil industry here in the US, though.

So are you in an area that would be helped or hurt by dropping oil prices?

$1.56 a gallon here--much lower than across the river in Work State, where it's usually at least 10, sometimes 20 cents a gallon cheaper.  Happily, I haven't had to drive to work since March 10, but it's still nice to see gas prices so low.

Have you ever seen a similar thing near the airport rental car returns?

I've been in and out of the Atlanta airport where I think the only reason for a similar price difference is because everyone misses the first turn, has to get off at the next turn to get gas and return their rental on time (because they're more worried at that point about making their next connection) and can't afford to comparison shop because, time.

Some places have all the angles figured.

M.

I don't do a lot of driving on a day-to-day basis in normal times, since I commute to work on foot and run many errands by bicycle.  Oddly enough I've done a little bit of extra driving as a result of the plague.  All banking now has to be done by drive-through window.  I can't bicycle through the drive-through.  So I have to drive downtown every time I make a deposit.

I normally take longer drives every few weeks to go to bookstores, attend professional meetings, visit family, etc.  Since mid-March I've done less of this than normal.  I think I've driven out of the county four times in the last four months.  But these have all been to destinations that were hours away, so I have racked up some hundreds of miles.

Gas is a bit under $2 a gallon locally now.

We used not to be allowed to walk or cycle through the outdoor bank lines but they lifted that in March to be able to close the indoors "walk-up" teller stations.

The banks are still closed, so I think that's still the case.

It's been in the $2.2x range for the past month or so.  I had to take ALHS to a dr. appointment in St. Louis today and filled up downtown for $1.79/gallon; all the other places we passed in the city were $1.99.

Filled up the car today. It took over 15 gallons, but it has been over six weeks to drive the 214 miles!

MY mpg is terrible now. I suspect that part of the problem is that I am spening more time in drive in lanes or even when I order ahead, it takes time for them to bring my supplies to the car, so the car is sitting idle for much longer than in the past.

We're back to what we were when all this started: ~4.38/gallon, if I'm converting correctly. That's here; it's about $3.52 in town.

Our mpg tanked too, because now that we're always home, the only places the car ever goes are up steep hills (most notably the driveway).

Fuel prices have been going up because of an agreement between OPEC and Russia, according to the NY Times (http://ny%20times).

Prices went up from $2.09 about 10 days before Christmas to $2.13 a few days later, and are now around $2.39. I thought they would go down after the New Year, but apparently not.

Well, in my hole in the forest, at Sam's club, it was $2.38 for regular unleaded a couple of days ago. As I pulled up to to the pumps a black fellow of like station, automotively speaking, was proximate, just beginning to  "gas up". He looked at me in a manner of woe that gave his opinion of recent price increases. My verbal reply was, "NOW LOOK WHAT Y'ALL HAVE DONE!". For a moment there I thought I had angered him. But then he smiled. I was relieved. To quote actor, singer, comedian, and more, of the 20th century, Phil Harris, "That's What I Like About About The South"!!!

I filled up this morning at 2.69.  The vehicle computer said I had 37 more miles to go.  The radio had just reported that 1 in 4 stations in SC is out of gas now.  I am not in SC, and actually, I m closer to the start of the pipeline, rather than the end, but prices are still increasing and with only 37 miles worth of gas in the truck, (and my car at the repair shop until At Least Friday - and it doesnt have a lot of gas either!), I figured I d better get gas while I could.

The good news is that while I didnt have much gas this morning, In the Days of Covid, a tank seems to go a month or more!  So it is just poor timing that I needed gas now.

Are you seeing long lines and stations running out in your area?

Alas, Russia is a big oil exporter and Ukraine is an oil importer. A high oil price helps Russia and hurts Ukrainian citizens.

The way to hurt Russia is to include her energy exports in the sanctions, raising price further for us, the buyers, but allowing Russia less revenue from oil sales because they would be allowed to sell a lower quantity. This has not been done. Imports of energy from Russia have not been restricted.

What bugs me about Western policy is that the words sound nice, weapons are donated, but please, do not ask us to sacrifice by getting cold in winter or hot in summer. Seems we are for freedom so long as we are comfortable.

I suspect cynics are taking advantage of the rumor mill to raise prices even before an oil/gas embargo has been approved--which may not happen (despite the unusual convergence of bipartisan opinion between those from oil-competing states and those with more ethical concerns in mind...), if Biden doesn't agree.

I also heard an interesting comment on a newscast, which was new to me (probably well-known to others). The late John McCain was said to have claimed that Russia was just "a gas station masquerading as a country."

Perhaps I shouldn't comment, though, since I last owned a car in 1984.

Well, US is banning imports of Russian fuels. Given the quantities involved, the EU promise to cut imports of Russian fuel by 2/3 this year, almost credible, is the bigger deal.

I think this matters.

[On the other hand, think of the US not selling oil to Japan and its consequence and compare it to the West not buying oil from Russia and its possible consequences. No, I don't think they will be similar.]

$3.80 yesterday.

$4.36 was the least expensive, cash or credit.

Exxon Mobil, where I usually get gas, was charging $4.25 for cash, higher for credit.

I have several long road trips coming up, so it's going to be an expensive series of trips.

We can set the price of gasoline anywhere we want. We just won't get the quantity we want at that price or even a higher price.

Here is footage from the 1974 gasoline shortage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOi_ZgPlC1k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOi_ZgPlC1k) Caused by price controls.  Clearly, less gas was produced and delivered and more was desired for consumption. The non-price rationing needed was by length of line! Great for people who put a zero value on their leisure time.

It seems people have to relearn obvious stuff every generation or two.

It's not like the last time the barrel price was this high the pump price was, though. There's a disconnect in there. It's driven by more than just supply issues.

There is no reason to expect any constant relationship between crude and pump prices. There is no reason for any of us to care.

Going with Biden & Warren, if it's not supply, and if it's not demand, it would be greed. The oil companies could have gotten more greedy. Or it's more phlogiston in the atmosphere.

Control petrol prices, ration by queue, tax oil company profits, impose a General Maximum, but then don't count on more oil today. :-)

You leave speculation out of your equation.  Oil prices are not just supply and demand, they also factor in perceived risk and predictions.  I don't think the current issues have much to do with actual supply issues (yet).

As for greed it isn't that oil companies get more greedy.  They have always been greedy (this is the underlying principle of capitalism, not just for oil companies), there are just times they can capitalize on a situation.

Since petrol doesn't spoil, it can be stored in the ground for a long time. In such a market, expectations of future price co-determine current supply and demand. Everybody expects Russian oil to disappear from western markets. Hence, expected future price rises. This induces current suppliers to keep more petrol in the ground. That drives up current price.

That's what speculation does -- it smooths the hit over time. We should write thank you notes to speculators. :-)

It has broken four dollars a gallon here in recent days, and people are very much up in arms.  Nothing much they can do, except pay up and try to economize.  Which many could do better if they didn't insist on driving vehicles large enough to pull a log truck out of a ditch.  Granted, some local folks actually DO have to pull log trucks out of ditches now and then, but most just seem to want more truck than they honestly need.

Not too worried for myself, since I drive a car that gets 42 miles per gallon on the interstate.  I am concerned for people I know who can barely afford fuel in the best of times.

As far as I can tell, production is currently the same today as it was a month ago, prices are not.  So they are not "leaving it in the ground".  I assume demand is up a bit, which explains part, but not all of the increase.  The rest is speculation, and I dont really feel like writing a thank you letter at the moment.

I hadn't seen the charts when I made my correct inferences from price and Russia alone. What I missed was that demand is up, too [on account economic activity has picked up from Covid lows].

One can't speculate without either leaving it in the ground or storing final product above ground.
Th former is cheaper. The chart about world production shows more stuff is being left in the ground. And remember: Speculation smooths consumption. It is a good thing!

QuoteUp like a rocket, down like a feather.

An industry term  [Lisa, in My Cousin Vinny]. :-)

Ages ago I read an academic article hypothesizing that gasoline price rose quickly in a rising market on account people drove around a lot to find the lowest prices. So, just keep raising prices as the lines get longer! However, in a falling market they drove around less. Shorter lines to see. As a consequence, price fell more slowly.

There's clearly majorly stuff going on about expectations at the moment, but the search story is at first blush plausible and certainly intriguing.

Gasoline tax suspension means that the savings to the consumer in the form of price reduction will be split with the suppliers. The more price sensitive side of the market pays less of the tax, so it collects less of the savings. I have no clue which side that is, but the consumer won't save the whole tax. It does mean an increase in government debt which has to be serviced in the future. Some of that tax revenue would have come from the oil companies. Now it won't.

Still sounds good, yes? :-)

Praise the Lord! Miracles are possible! Rationality strikes!

That gas has got more expensive is a signal -- use less of it! Reducing the gas tax says -- keep using.

That doesn't mean you can't help people. Strangely, in Virginia the Democrats have the better idea.

"Other approaches supported by the Senate, such as the tax rebate check or refundable earned income tax credit, would likely be more effective options in providing relief to our citizens."

This way, one could spend one's extra money on gas, if absolutely necessary, or save on gas and spend it on other things.

$4.63 and the usual decimals, cash (I think this was the least expensive of the four stations I passed this morning). I've been watching the price go up from $4.18 just ten or so days ago. Should have filled up last week, but I still have half a tank left. It's going to be an expensive summer.

My really old car gets 22 mpg, so my-hour long commute is ridiculously expensive currently.

Over four dollars here now, in a state which has historically had some of the lowest gas prices in the nation.  And still does--it's just that the low is a lot higher now.

I know one staff member who has curtailed her already limited driving to save fuel.

I was in disbelief when I saw the prices at the four or five gas stations on my way to the grocery store this morning because the price was almost $5 last week. I haven't been driving much but I kept watching the prices go up and telling myself that I should fill up before the prices went above $5.

It's hard to make meaning out of individual price reports from different times and places with different tax rates, blending rules, and locations. Most important at the moment, we must not confuse the effect of the overall inflation rate on the price off gasoline with a change in the relative price of gasoline.

Adjusted for inflation, the price of gasoline is still lower than it was in February 1981, July 2008, and all through 2011 to 2014.

https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/realprices/ (https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/realprices/)

My forecast for gasoline prices is that they will fluctuate. :-)

Ugh - $5.09 for regular unleaded here...good thing I had fuel points, which brought it down to $4.39 a gallon...but, then again, I only had so many fuel points because grocery prices have also been astronomical.

Dont Feed The Dismalist!

Dismalist only posts here to tell us why this information is useless, or that gasbuddy or AAA provide national and regional numbers.  Ignore him/her.

Finally, this last post is just wrong, but I wasnt going to point out that many of us post the CHANGES in prices and the direction of change  (as a potential warning to GO NOW and fill up or WAIT a day or so...  , so while the levels are a function of state taxes, the changes are NOT,  but I hope that hu goes to other threads to post there dismal outlook elsewhere!

Gas prices went up in a matter of hours today. The gas station along the main drag (prices are usually higher here because of the location) was selling gas for $4.96 or thereabouts this morning, around 9:30. On my way back around 4 this afternoon, the price had gone up to $5.13. I think the gas prices in the stations closer to home also seem to be higher than they were just a couple of days ago.

Not even a week ago I filled up at $4.01, the next day saw $3.99 around.  Now $4.29 seems to be the going rate!

Not sure what they will be in a month for the July 4 weekend!

Maybe the prices will keep people closer to home?

Around $5.10 today, up from $4.71 last week.

Gas prices in NJ are around $5.40, according to yesterday's news on TV; back in the good old days we NYC-ers would fill up whenever we were in NJ because the prices were much lower in that state.

Ive been out of town for some time.  I spent a week in Florida because my father was admitted to the hospital, and days after returning, we had to go to a conference (on Better Investing... which I recommend) in Dallas.

Upon returning home I was happy to see that gas was only $4.18!
I dont remember what it was before I left, but compared to the prices I saw in Dallas and Central Florida, this is a happy price!
There are some stations in town, though that still show $4.59!  SO I hope that this is a remnant of last week and not a foreshadowing of things to come!

Though my area is dealing with very high temps and the local electric company is threatening to black us out if we dont conserve, so Im tempted to fill the gas cans and prep the generator in case i need to power my own, emergency window AC  (because i would NOT have been a good pioneer, especially when i m sick!!)

3.08 within the last few days AND 7-11 has a phone ap to track purchases that offeres and 11 cent a gallon discount!

Im almost looking forward to filling up for under $3 a gallon!  (but the giddiness will fade when i see the total!)

Something happened!  Prices went from $3.08 to 3.19 overnight!
One store still had $3.08 AND as it was a 7-11 they offer 11 cents off a gallon with the ap code.
So i filled up the car (it was about 1/3 of a tank left), came home, and then drove the truck back to fill it up too!

What about you? Have you noticed a recent gas price spike?

I really don't pay much attention to gasoline prices.  It's minor for me: retirement and COVID wariness can leave (as today) my car in the drive.  If I do drive, it's a small handful of miles to mart, to docs, and to library (for reading trash).  No other obligations, and the portfolio stays plump.  Well, I do plan to visit a lawyer to revise my will and disinherit some jerks.  But this office is not that far away.  Do it soon, boy!  "And at my back..."

I saw it and considered stopping the car and taking a picture!!

Gas for $2.99!!!

Then a mile away at Sams, it was only $2.94!!!

Then I got closer to home and it was back to $3.19.  I guess that I have to get out more often and venture further out!

$2.99 has reached my neighborhood!
And I think that 7-11 is still offering 11 cents off with the ap.

Im hoping that it stays there or lower by the time I need to fill up again!  But I m not down even 1/4 tank on either vehicle!

$2.95 today at 7-11 and from that I got an 11 cent discount, bringing it down to $2.84!

Had not bought gas in nearly 3 weeks!

Next week have a trip to a nearby conference, so Ill be getting more gas next week.  Maybe 2 tanks worth!

What is gas in your neighborhood?

Also, if you are anywhere on the Gulf of Mexico, you may want to fill your tanks.  Could be a storm heading in there next week... cutting offshore production, and maybe refineries.  No telling... too early to tell, but keep an eye out for a low price to take advantage of while you might be able!

Nope, today's prices are around $3.29.9.

Prices might start going up again, given the decision by OPEC and Russia to cut production.

Kicking myself for not filling up earlier!
After the road trip home from the Big City Airport last weekend, gas was about 2.55 a gallon.  I filled up yesterday at $2.89!

Not sure when the refineries change to the Winter Blend, and I dont know if the winter or summer blend is cheaper...

Title: Re: What does Fuel Cost in your Neighborhood?
Post by: Ruralguy on January 14, 2023, 06:29:23 PM
If you believe the internet, then winter blend is cheaper. I don't recall when they switch, but it would have happened already, and in fact happened earlier this year to get a jump on distributing cheaper gas (not sure if that really worked in the long run).  There seems to be a strong correlation between gas station posted prices and oil futures, with a delay of a 1 or 2 days.
Title: Re: What does Fuel Cost in your Neighborhood?

$2.99 seems to be the popular price now.  So the dip below $3 (IF you got to enjoy it with me) may be at an end!

I may have to start a new thread "What do Eggs Cost in your neighborhood?"  It was $4.48 a dozen when I went to the store in the last few days!

Everything seems to have jumped in price!  (Everything except my pay, anyway!)

On the positive front (because I am a net saver), CD rates at my local credit union jumped to 4.68 (4.75 APY) for a 2 year CD, and I was able to move some money that had matured a few weeks ago that I delayed on committing to a cd at just 3%.

So What is gas (and eggs and CD rates if you like) in your neighborhood these days?
Title: Re: What does Fuel Cost in your Neighborhood?
Post by: clean on January 25, 2023, 12:26:45 PM
$3.09 over the last day or 2.
As my gas gauge moves backwards from F to E, the price at the pump seems to be detecting the situation and adjusting appropriately (for the station anyway!)

Let's talk about fuel oil.  I try to be modest at keeping the house warm.  Sweaters, heavy comforters, quick showers (the Navy kind) and yet the bill that came in lately was for a tad less than $1K.  I guess "hot under the collar" helps out.  But a "sweater" does not actually lead there...

Yikes! I know our natural gas bill was about 50% higher than this time last year, due to rising costs (even though I locked in a rate, still much higher, but better than the variable, market-driven rate).

As my father used to say, "Wear a sweater"!

Wool and heating oil [diesel] are substitutes. [For most of us. The relations are properties of us, not of the goods. I don't mix diesel into my breakfast cereal. Some may, though.]

Substitutes of substitutes are substitutes. Substitutes of complements are complements. Complements of complements are complements.

When I started out graduate study I was a TA, holding discussion sessions and doing all  the grading. We're talking very early 1970's. One question on the final exam in Econ 101 was:

The Canadian government is thinking of legalizing marijuana. The beer and wine industries are in favor. The distilled liquor industry is against. Using the concepts of "substitutes" and "complements", explain why this is rational  [i.e. self-interested] behavior.

One student wrote: There is nothing better than to have a bottle of Boone's Farm Apple Wine in one hand and a joint in the other.

Naturally, I awarded full credit.

Not sure what to say about gas prices.  Very 'volatile' .
Current price has jumped to $3.35.  It was under $3 within the last month, and had been steady in the $3.05-3.14 range lately.

What is it doing in your neighborhood?

It was $3.99 yesterday at most places when I was out running errands, I filled up for $3.80 at Sam's Club. That's what it's been for a while here.

Somewhere over three bucks when I filled up my motorcycle yesterday.  Fortunately it gets 100 miles per gallon, so I only needed a little over a gallon.

Has anybody else noticed a proliferation of out-of-order gas pumps lately?  Only about half of them were running at our local fuel outlet yesterday, and on a recent trip across the state line I had to go to three places to find one that appeared to have any working pumps at all.

Gas prices have been going down, not because of the goodness of heart of our govenrment.

There was a time when having American oil production up at record levels would have been considered good news.  We certainly live in a different world now.

If one believes that global warming is costly, what one wants is really, really cheap to produce fossil fuels, together with a carbon tax to make it really, really expensive to consume! Then quantity used goes down, emissions go down, and the revenue to promote one's favorite projects -- anything from other tax reduction to subsidizing higher ed -- goes up.

This is the cheapest way of combating the consequences of global warming, on account the easiest substitution possibilities get made use of first.

$2.99 in my usual gas station, and just above $3 in the other ones. I think I saw the below-$3 rate about a week ago, so am glad that the prices are holding steady. I haven't needed to fill up yet, so I'm not sure if the posted rates are the same as the ones charged by the gas station.

Have been quarantined at home with COVID so not ventured out lately.  However, I did get out today and saw that prices were up $.20 or so since I was sidelined! Prices close to home are now $2.74 or so.
What prices are you seeing?   With the big storms hitting everywhere do you think prices will rise or fall (as who can go anywhere?)

$2.39-$2.59.   I paid $2.09 today where the four stations are in a continual gas war. Could have gone for $1.79 at one but would have been in line forever.
