General Discussion / Re: The Tax Man Cometh!

Quote from: ab_grp on April 15, 2024, 07:49:05 AMWe're waiting excitedly (/sarcasm) to see if our CPA filed an extension and intends to complete our taxes or if I'm going to have to do so.  They were a great little local business but got bought out last year by a national group, and we have had zero correspondence from them! For others who use a CPA (especially part of a firm), I would be interested to know if you get any kind of updates that they have received your files, they plan to prepare your tax returns, the returns are ready for review, or an extension is being filed, or...?

Same thing happened to me.  Every year, worse service at a higher cost.  Last year they put me so far down their priority list I needed an extension - that never happened with the mom & pop firm I used to use.  Now, they just mail me a large envelope with a checklist, tell me "put your crap in here" and I drop it off at their office and hope they do something with it.

I downloaded Turbo Tax this year, did it myself for 1/3 the cost and basically the same outcome as the CPA firm used to get me with respect to return being accepted and refund/tax owing calculated.

Got folks who waited until the last minute to get their tax materials copied, printed, or both here at the library. Argh!

Quote from: Christianity Today articleBoer became president of Calvin at a time when the school had been under pressure to abide by the rules of the Christian Reformed Church in North America, in particular the church's teaching about sexuality. In 2022, the denomination ruled that congregations and church members must abide by church teaching on marriage and sex—which state that only heterosexual sex within marriage is allowed.

In the fall of 2022, Boer told Religion News Service that Calvin will continue to be hospitable to its LGBTQ students. "I don't want to be the president of an institution that isn't welcoming to everybody," Boer said.

That would be a different split between a board and a president than we are used to seeing. But also reflects a move away from the middle that is more common.

The BOT gives some info here:

Boer is a former oil executive and son of Christian Reformed Church missionaries. He became Calvin's president in 2022.

Hoping to make real progress on the grading, followed by streamlining. Maybe even starting to write my report...

Not an email, but feedback on a course: "Every topic was quite interesting and i like every topic but they are also boring "

@lightning--I used Turbo Tax for a couple of years around ten or so years ago, but went back to H&R Block because of some problems with the former. I don't recall what these were, but have had no issues with the latter. My taxes are relatively uncomplicated, which helps with the filing and the refunds.

ab_grp, thanks for the link. I'm so glad to hear that Will Shortz is recovering.

Just found my scraps of paper with the LB solutions: winklers/squamous and standup/pylori for the previous day. Squamous sounded familiar so it might have featured in an earlier puzzle--I don't think I've encountered this word in any other context. Langue_doc, you need to do better than using scraps of paper for writing things down.

Langue_doc, I actually was up earlier than usual today, just because I couldn't get back to sleep.  But I also had time to pop on the computer earlier than usual.  I wish that meant better puzzle luck so far!

I just saw this article about Will Shortz returning to NPR Weekend Edition yesterday.  I had not heard of that show, but I guess it's something he has co-hosted weekly and has been absent from due to his stroke.  He sounds like he is recovering and continues to work hard at it.  https://laist.com/news/npr-puzzlemaster-will-shortz-returns-to-weekend-edition-after-stroke-disclosure-in-mar

IHE: Tennessee Triples Down on Targeting 'Divisive Concepts'

QuoteRepublican lawmakers in multiple states have listed and taken aim at certain theories or beliefs that they often associate with pushes for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Tennessee was among the first to act. In 2022, its Republican-controlled General Assembly passed a law saying public college and university students and employees couldn't be penalized if they didn't endorse certain "divisive concepts." These included the idea that meritocracy is inherently racist and the notion that "the rule of law does not exist, but instead is a series of power relationships and struggles among racial or other groups."
