Hmmmm.... methinks you are granting too much to the notion that ignorance is responsible for this kid's behavior.   He would almost certainly never have dared to email one of his hs teachers this way-- what would he suspect had changed?

General Discussion / Re: What Do You Fix?
Last post by clean - Today at 04:59:37 PM
I just fixed my front door!

over time, the part of the door that goes into the door jam was not fully retracting.  A few days ago, the outside handle was sort of wonky.  Today My Bride got stuck outside and had to go all the way around the house to get in.
When I got home, I was able to get in, but it was not an easy task.

I took the door knob apart and found a screw had fallen out somewhere.  So with some more effort I took the whole thing apart, put the screw back in and after some effort got all of the other screws to line back up and I was able to reinstall it!

My Bride was able to get back in, and now she could do it with one hand!  (As for some time, it has taken a bit more effort).

So I am the HERO for today!...

Quote from: ab_grp on Today at 07:49:05 AMWe're waiting excitedly (/sarcasm) to see if our CPA filed an extension and intends to complete our taxes or if I'm going to have to do so.  They were a great little local business but got bought out last year by a national group, and we have had zero correspondence from them! For others who use a CPA (especially part of a firm), I would be interested to know if you get any kind of updates that they have received your files, they plan to prepare your tax returns, the returns are ready for review, or an extension is being filed, or...?

Same thing happened to me.  Every year, worse service at a higher cost.  Last year they put me so far down their priority list I needed an extension - that never happened with the mom & pop firm I used to use.  Now, they just mail me a large envelope with a checklist, tell me "put your crap in here" and I drop it off at their office and hope they do something with it.

I downloaded Turbo Tax this year, did it myself for 1/3 the cost and basically the same outcome as the CPA firm used to get me with respect to return being accepted and refund/tax owing calculated.

Ugh! I just deleted a whole long rant about how this whole process unfolded, but long story short she is filing an extension.  We are one of about 200 returns she still has to review.  I appreciate that she is being diligent! I do like her a lot! I wish she had not sold her practice to this group.  I guess there were some issues with how the new system imports info from the old system.  I am frustrated.  I usually do TurboTax myself in the background to check that things look reasonable and to give myself a heads up about what the outcome might be, so maybe I will just do that in the future now that our portfolio is a bit simpler.  I'm glad you were able to save money and annoyance!

Good evening!

Late with puzzles today, as Middle Daughter is visiting and I had a lot to do to get ready.

QBwSBB yesterday for ghee and ninth (gah!). Today I got to QB with SBB help.

LB: Lots of solutions today! I had winkers-squamous. I found one today fairly quickly.

MD usually comes with Grandson, but he is in France (Strasbourg) with his French class, staying with a French family. We had a very long chat with him today—he seems to be having a wonderful time, and doing well with his French. And it's wonderful to have MD all by herself—we had some great one-on-one time today, walking around our condo complex and chatting, while my husband napped.

Anyway—happy puzzling!

General Academic Discussion / Re: Tenure and Contract
Last post by Golazo - Today at 03:49:56 PM
This is not legal advice...

Are you public or private? If you are public, everyone who already has tenure is likely protected by the contracts clause, though you might have the threaten to sue, unless you have really weird language about tenure.

If you are private, this depends on specific language about what your handbook and contact said when you were given a tenured contract. But the case law is surprising often pro-faculty.

From a junior in college:

"goodmorning, and i feel like some of the assignments i earned more than what i got my actual work was good just was not formatted how you wanted but aside from how it's formatted the actual work i feel i should have a higher grade in certain assignments"

And no, the actual work wasn't actually that good: they tend to do the minimum (when they do answer all of the questions for each assignment) and hand work in late. Plus the plagiarism, of course.
