Title: Chronicle forum post counts
Post by: kaysixteen on May 23, 2019, 09:34:49 PM
Good to see folks here.  I was wondering if anyone knew how I can get my Chronicle forum post count added to my sig header here, as it seems most veterans have already done.  Maybe I missed something when I signed on here?

Hi kaysixteen,

Glad to see you've made the leap.

1. Click "Profile" in the menu bar.
2. Choose "Forum Profile" from the drop-down menu.
3. Manually enter your number of CHE forum posts in the box provided.
4. Click "Change profile" at the bottom of the page.

VoilĂ !

VoilĂ ! is a good subtitle for this forum. Features we wished we could have on the old one  happen easily here.

What about status based on post counts? Now we're all "New members" except for the moderators. I miss being one of the bourgeois elite.

But it takes so little to be above average!

Think of the opportunities with a new start!  The statistics on the front page indicate that I'm currently the postiest at 134, but that the bar for being in the top 10 postiest is 15 posts.

The next title happens at 250 and I will be away from my computer this weekend.  Thus, someone could go quickly and be the first to be the next title.

So, not to complain so early on, but:  The field in the profile for entering one's CHE post count needs to be larger.  Folks with fewer than 10,000 posts can use a comma, but those of us with 10,000 or more posts apparently cannot.  Can this be adjusted?  Many thanks.

P.S.  Those of you who were responsible for researching and establishing these new fora (including the decision making involved) deserve a big round of applause.  Thank you for taking this on!  I haven't been around the fora much these past few years, but it has been nice to know that the fora were there, and I'm glad that CHE's decision to discontinue supporting them didn't lead to the demise of this community.  Again, thanks!

Okay, glad to have the comma, but why is the post counter here not counting my posts?  The count says "1" when this here is my fourth post (so it should be reading "3" until I hit "Post" on this message).  Is this part of working out the kinks?

Huh, that's a new problem.  Yes, let's call it working out the kinks.

Maybe posts on the Help board don't count?
Title: Re: Chronicle forum post counts
Post by: Liquidambar on June 04, 2019, 07:09:07 AM
Okay, my post count didn't increase after that last post.  So perhaps this theory is correct.

(Now why can't I find the edit button anymore?)
Title: Re: Chronicle forum post counts
Post by: Liquidambar on June 04, 2019, 07:17:00 AM
Okay, this particular board is just weird, probably because it's the one where guests can post without logging in.  My post count incremented and I saw the edit button when I posted on a different board.
Title: Re: Chronicle forum post counts
Post by: eigen on June 04, 2019, 08:32:52 AM
Hmm, that's strange. My assumption is that it's this broad because guests can post... but I'll dig into the settings more later.
Title: Re: Chronicle forum post counts
Post by: eigen on June 04, 2019, 10:42:59 AM
Ok, so it should just be this board that isn't counting posts.

The reason behind that is that this board (Help) is specifically for people who do not have accounts (or can't access their accounts) to post, and as such, it's more vulnerable to spam.

If we count posts here, that allows spammers to post a bunch here and use that to bypass the security on the other sets of boards.

Can I just say how glad I am that that little sentence "you have been logged into the forum for 486 hours" or whatever it was no longer comes up?  I used to perform this mental math and feel guilty for having spent months of my life here and promise to do better, etc. etc. etc.  Best not to know.

Perhaps this isn't the best time for me to say that I can see how much time you've spent logged on, and I suspect that you could, too, if I told you where to look... (sorry about it!)

I don't think it's tied to my moddly privileges, anyway. If someone without them feels like checking, let me know!

When I log in as a regular member, I can see anyone's stats through their profile, but I have to look in the right place.

As a regular member, I can also click the stats link at the bottom of the main page and see top 10 stats for longest time in.  I am currently behind the leader Namazu so clearly I need to up my game.

Is this the place to admit that I visit my home office during commercial breaks in the evening just to see if someone new has registered or something really juicy has been posted?

Or should I admit that I have not been to bed on time in a few weeks because I do one last 5 min check here that turns into a couple hours?
