Title: Things To Test
Post by: eigen on May 16, 2019, 04:25:37 PM
So as we're in the alpha phase of testing here, I thought I'd start an (incomplete) list of the things we need to test.

One of the main ones relates to privacy. Since moderators (and admins) can see all the registration details, if some of the people testing the member experience would play around with viewing profiles and making sure private information is staying private, that would be great.

Another thing to test is the edit window. I haven't quite figured out if there is one or how to adjust it, but I also can't test it, since admins have unlimited editing power.

Regarding the edit window, what are you looking to adjust? I can stretch it vertically... sometimes... the grab bars at the center bottom doesn't do anything for me.

That annoying animated "marquee" thing (with the M and backwards arrow) has to go!! Anything moving by default is bad, IMO. Actually, I can just adblock that sucker out...

We also don't really need emoticons if we want to keep it professional looking like the old forum.

I will poke around profiles. What should I not be able to see?

You're in the same situation as I am- since you're a global moderator, you'll be able to see everything.

We need some of the people testing the "member" role to poke around profiles and see what's visible.

For adjusting the edit window, I meant with respect to time: there's a time after posting that you're able to modify, and after that it closes off. I can't find anything that allows me to adjust that time in the forum settings, so we need to see if it exists. Once again, you can't test it as a moderator- but we have a number of other users (hibush, valmor, hypatia, cc_alan) that can test some of those things.

OK, I think I've disabled attachments, emojis, and adjusted the time window for editing.

It should now be set to allow "courtesy" edits (no notification the post was edited) for 2 minutes after posting, and allow the post to be modified for 60 minutes after originally posted.

That's great. The courtesy edit is a nice touch.

In the profiles I can only see when members registered, when they were last active and how many posts they have made. Age would show, but nobody is filling that in. You can figure out the time zone they are using.

There are a number of message icons to chose from!

We have full emoji power.  :P
And can write with all kinds of typographic modifications.

Really annoying moving text aka Marquee!

When I log in with the boxes in the upper left, it immediately says I'm timed out.  When I go to the main login screen and log into the main box, it works okay.

I needed to type some cryptic letters to be allowed to post this.

The marquee button above the box where I'm typing my post is really annoying.  (The moving emoticons that fast_and_bulbous posted are also annoying.  Are those built-in here?)

Yeah we're gonna get rid of that... we're just testing here. Eigen thought he disabled that but clearly it's ... abled!

I too had a problem logging in, where it only worked when it gave me the dialog that was in the middle of the screen.

Okay, I'll stop whining about the marquee button.  On to testing the things that we're supposed to test...

I viewed profiles for Administrator, Senior Moderator, and regular member.  Everything looks fine, no personal information visible except what the person presumably wants visible (e.g., fast_and_bulbous's gender).  A weird thing is that stats are available for what time of day each person posts (displayed as a bar graph).  I don't know if anyone would consider that too intrusive.  I don't think it is, since the info could be manually collected by looking at someone's posts.

I'm going to try posting this without typing the secret code letters (captcha thingy).  Nope, it lets me preview but not post without them.

An annoying thing is that after I post, it kicks me back to the list of threads instead of to the post I just made.  I can't remember if the old fora did that too.

Editing...  I don't think I can edit the post I just made.  At least I don't see an edit button on it.  Am I just overlooking it?
Title: Re: Things To Test
Post by: Liquidambar on May 16, 2019, 08:09:03 PM
Actually, here's a privacy issue with the profiles...  It's showing everyone's local time.  I'm not sure that everyone wants their timezone known.  Can that be turned off?
Title: Re: Things To Test
Post by: namazu on May 16, 2019, 08:24:18 PM
Weirdly, I see only 2/15 members in one time zone, and everyone else in another time zone.  I know that at least a couple of the members who appear to be in one time zone are in another.  I don't see an option (as there is on some other forum platforms) to choose your time zone, so I'm not sure how that gets populated -- if it's based on IP address, it sure has guessed wrong.

I don't see an "edit" button, either.

Thanks for all the testing gang!

I'm wondering if some of this has to do with the post count ranks- I'll see about changing those settings tomorrow.

For attachments and emoji, I thought I had it turned off for everyone but mods, I'll have to see why it's not working.

For the marquee setting on the text window, I'm not sure that's controllable in the software. The only option I see is to turn off the WYSIWYG editor entirely, but that might be worthwhile.
Title: Re: Things To Test
Post by: eigen on May 16, 2019, 09:04:55 PM
Hmm, I tried turning off the WYSIWYG editor, and it seems to have no effect.

I did tweak the user permission some, see if that effects your ability to edit.

Officially, attachments and emoji are turned off- not sure how some are appearing

Re: time zone display -- members have the option to set a time-offset from Fora Standard Time under Profile > Modify Profile > Look and Layout.

I don't see an option to suppress it altogether, but people who wish to actively obscure their location can do so.

Ah, I found it.  (I had to click the plus sign next to "Attachments and other options.")  Let's see what happens.

Eigen, is it possible to turn off the verification text?  Since you're manually approving accounts, spam seems unlikely.

"Return to this topic" does work, but it looks like I'll have to select it again every time I post.  (It didn't stay checked from the last time.)

By the way, the marquee button is gone.  Nice job, eigen.

Preview works without having to do the verification. Cool.

Now I'll try to edit. It works! I don't recall how long we have to edit, though.

Teletype? Ah!

Can we do links? Link to CNN (http://"http://www.cnn.com") (that should be a link... hmm... turned the square brackets into parentheses and took away the psuedo-html-code).
I don't remember what was decided. Will people be allowed to embed a link?

Hmm, right. I'm not sure where that button is hiding, but I'll try to hunt around for it. I don't know that we had decided anything about embedding links, but it seems like a good idea for us to be able to do that.

EDIT: Doesn't look like enabling the button is among the things I have access to, sorry. Unless I'm looking in totally the wrong place, eigen'll have to find it.

Thanks to all of you for keeping this going. Logging on was not exactly intuitive, but I'm a bit of a tech doofus, which is one reason that I didn't volunteer to be a mod. I'm a good canary though -- I'm happy to beta test.

Hmm, I think I can turn back on embedded links separate from the image code- I'll check on that.

I'll also turn off the verification. At the moment, it's set up to require verification for the first 10 posts from a new account- I figured that would be a good setting to keep around long-term, and shouldn't require verification from people for very long as we move into large scale membership drives.

Ok, looks like URL code is turned back on.

There's a setting to turn on and off each piece of BBC code that allows embeds- I've got most of them turned off, but can turn them on individually if you find something else missing you'd like.

There appears to be an issue with logging "in the top left" as opposed to clicking on the Login tab and logging in "in the middle".

I continually can't do the first but can do the second.

Ok, so it looks like the top-right login bug is a "known issue" in this version of the software. I'm going to try a code-based fix, but that may or may not work.

Login definitely works if you go to the main "Login" screen.

I tested the edit timer today, editing a post more than 50 minutes after I made it.  My vote would be for keeping a longer window than the old forum.  I often thought of a better way to say something after the window closed, or did not catch an error in time.

I'm open to more flexibility, but I think we also want to avoid situations where someone edits the initial question after answers have been given.

It's currently set to 60 minutes, so it should have let you edit 50 minutes after posting?

What would you suggest as an alternative timer?

Oh, I was just confirming that the 60 minute window worked for me as a regular member, and expressing appreciation for having a longer time to edit than allowed on the old fora.  I think 60 minutes is a fairly longish time already, though, and I would not suggest making it longer.  I agree that we don't want  folks making a muddle of the thread by changing non-quoted material after several replies have been posted.

Tanks! Dealt with one report, leaving the other for someone else to try their hand.

EDIT: Looks like we can split posts off to form new topics, and move threads/topics from one board to another, but we can't move posts from one thread to another. I think splitting it off and merging is currently the only way to accomplish the task. Good to know, if that's the case!

I didn't see the time zone thingy at first, so didn't change it; anyone doing the same would lead to a number of folks in the default time zone, which might be what you're seeing.

The quote boxes are too much indented and the smaller typeface borders on annoyingly invisible. Can that be ratcheted up a few points and maybe not have nested quotes change background colors so much?

Those visual cues are fine when a structure is wanted that lowers their visual priority, but this gang lives for the quote function, once mastered, as a way of taking each other's comments seriously and showing exactly what part of a conversation they're commenting on themselves.

I would worry that the depth of discussion could suffer if quotes become more like marginalized decor, instead of valid, visible ways of moving ideas forward.

Can we just get rid of the time zone in people's profile's altogether? Is it possible to keep the times that I see in my timezone without others knowing what timezone I'm in?

Can a reader adjust the font size without just magnifying the entire web page?
Or, if that's a site design issue, can the admins make the font a little bigger?

Thanks ..... in anticipation

Can we get more data on how these fora look on various devices?

Or, if that's a site design issue, can the admins make the font a little bigger?

Thanks ..... in anticipation

Can we get more data on how these fora look on various devices?

Thanks polly_mer:

To answer your question to this query on the other thread:
Device = Dell laptop
Browser = Google Chrome

Thanks
Poiuy

Hi Poiuy, view on your end is going to depend on your browser and monitor settings, but also on your preference. You can always increase the zoom on your browser if you want a larger view.

I can say that the default font size is the same as the old forums, but it does scale based on screen size.

I've tested on OSX using Safari, Chrome and Firefox and iOS on an iPhone, iPad Pro and iPad mini using both Firefox and Safari.

Wanna_writemore has pointed out a potential problem.

FYI to those with tech knowledge/skills: My registration was approved and I tried to log in and selected 1 hour and got an error message. When I left it on the default forever option, the login worked.

Anyone willing to test some combinations and report back?

All the combinations work for me, which accords with Eigen's check on the log.  Thus, I'm calling this one a non-issue.

FWIW, I do virtually everything using my iPad (5th generation, iOS 12.2), although I do have a laptop I can use. I have not yet read this entire thread (and may have posted something to Moderation that might better be posted here), but I will try to do so in the coming days and test whatever I can on that platform. But, unless I specify differently, you can all assume that anything I post is coming from that iPad perspective. If I hit something that doesn't work, I'll try it on my laptop (I'll have to check those specification later) and report that, as well.

I'm using a 15" laptop with Firefox v.66.0.5.  The font here also appears far smaller than on the old forum (or any other website I routinely use).
I have a minimum font size set to 10 in my browser.  If I set it to 12 point, then the text is more comparable to the old forum.
If I set no minimum font size, the new forum shows up in about 8-point font.

On my iPad, I'm seeing no difference in font size from what I see on CHE or on the other board I've mentioned. The buttons (Post/Preview) are a little smaller, but the rest all seems to be the same.

My 7" Fire tablet using the Silk browser shows the default font here as about the same as on CHE fora and almost as good as on my 21.5" iMac.  However, I have turned the default zoom up to eleven on that small tablet.

However, while size and bold/italic/cross-out appear, I see only a couple different font faces, not the full range that I know is posted in some posts.

The setup and testing have gone really well and really fast. Thanks to many great contributors!

It looks as if the alpha testing issues have been done. Furthermore, the main topics have been outlined, threads have been carried over, and FAQs written. There are already 183 members, half of whom have posted.

Are we ready to declare beta mode? That is, invigorating the discussions about academe. Also to start thinking about thing like inviting more members who want to participate in such a conversation, and how to have an internet presence that might be discovered by new readers of CHE or IHE without getting overwhelmed by nonsense.

I'm calling the forum crash a jinx from this post, btw.

Aside from that, I think you're very right and we're rapidly progressing.

Yes, for sure. Resilience to server crashes is one of the last steps in alpha testing, so it's good we have that done with.
