Quote from: Ruralguy on May 13, 2024, 06:48:54 AMAlthough its a full book, I think you might want to take a look at Ari Shavit's My Promised Land. Its not at all what most people would think is an Israeli point of view on either historical Zionism or hope for a Palestinian state. Just an idea. I'm no expert.

I read Amazon's free sample of this book. Wow. What excellent writing. If I was teaching a history course specific to Israel, I would definitely use it, but alas, I am not.

Comedian James Gregory at 78. "The Funniest Man in America" was still touring--and still quite funny.

Thanks for the good thoughts, all.  It does help!  And yesterday I planted geraniums and sat out my snake plants on the little patio wall we built last summer, which also helped my mood. I'll do some more container planting today--those will be easy enough for ALHS to water and care for while I'm off my feet.

Langue doc, you're absolutely right: the doc/nurse needs to contact you with a plain-English version of your tests, esp. something like a CAT. When I got my CPAP, the provider told me, "The supplier will call you every. Single. Day. until you order supplies. Save yourself the headache and block their number immediately. When you need something, you can call them yourself."

Sorry to hear about the foot travails, AmLitHist!

I'm at war with the CPAP supplier. I had to block them from my cell phone because they would call/text every.single.day, sometimes more than once to remind me to reorder supplies, which only the doctor can do. When the doctor did reorder the supplies, they called me when I couldn't take the call in private and hence didn't want to announce my date of birth--it's the same address, same insurance, same everything--the representative got into a huff and hung up. Now I have to call the insurance to see if I am required to give them my date of birth so that they can continue sending the refills ordered by my doctor. I'm not too happy with the CPAP doctor either as I had a lung CatScan, but no information whatsoever about the results other than the medical jargon posted on my patient portal and a recommendation to repeat the scan after three months. I could ask for clarification through the portal, but I think it's the prescribing doctor's responsibility to get back to the patient and explain the findings in plain English.

Good morning!

QBwH for dummied, fifed. Genius with both pangrams today.

LB: No solution yesterday! None yet today, either, but it's early.

Ab_grp, I hope that your husband's ablation consultation went well.

Ciao_yall, safe travels!

Happy puzzling!

Good morning!

Pangrams and above genius. Dummied was the last word yesterday.

That's some globetrotting, ciao_yall!

ab_grp, hope the ablation consult was satisfactory. As for the hooded oriole, perhaps check out the local ebird listings to see if there was a sighting in your neighborhood? You could google ebird along with the nearest park, refuge, or even locality/neighborhood. Not all birds are vocal, so don't get recorded on the Merlin app.

Happy solving!

Submitted two articles yesterday, one long and one short. Both had lain dormant for a while, needing some last bit of work. Going out with Mrs Ancient Fellow for a celebratory breakfast today at our favourite place.

Quote from: Parasaurolophus on May 14, 2024, 10:32:06 AMContext from the Guardian:

QuoteAn analysis of 553 US campus demonstrations nationwide between 18 April and 3 May found that fewer than 20 resulted in any serious interpersonal violence or property damage, according to statistics from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (Acled).

Over the same period, Acled documented at least 70 instances of forceful police intervention against US campus protests, which includes the arrest of demonstrators and the use of physical dispersal tactics, including the deployment of chemical agents, batons and other kinds of physical force.

So the lack of "serious interpersonal violence or property damage" potentially still allows blocking people from services and spaces, among other things. It also potentially allows all kinds of nasty name-calling and verbal harassment.

Fake studies have flooded the publishers of top scientific journals, leading to thousands of retractions and millions of dollars in lost revenue. The biggest hit has come to Wiley, a 217-year-old publisher based in Hoboken, N.J., which Tuesday will announce that it is closing 19 journals, some of which were infected by large-scale research fraud.

In the past two years, Wiley has retracted more than 11,300 papers that appeared compromised, according to a spokesperson, and closed four journals. It isn't alone: At least two other publishers have retracted hundreds of suspect papers each...
