So with our first spammer registration today, we're moving to a new system: all users are probationary until their first post, and the first post must be approved by a moderator.
The forum software doesn't update until you post, so some of you may get caught in this! We will diligently try to approve posts and get you out of probation as fast as possible.
Thanks for your work on this!
A humble suggestion for your thread title:
SPAM: Starting Post Approval Mandatory
Thanks for the notice and all the efforts to keep SPAM away!
Thank you for this. I was going to ask if the software allowed the prohibition of accounts made from certain ISPs or regional domains, but this method will probably work better.

It does! I haven't quite figured it out, though.
I'm glad I didn't have to pass a spam test.
I already feel like one of the elders of Fora 2.0!

I think the approach you are adopting is a more robust approach. Some spammers manage to hijack legitimate systems - I was locked out of some places for a while after a former employer's system was hacked and used for a big spam campaign (one of those idiots who responded to an email claiming they needed to renew their password and "please click and your old password here to update" meant the whole university was blacklisted for a while).
I am a recently redundant moderator from the CHE Forum. I was useful for deleting spam before the US woke up, and many hours of my time would have been saved had a pre-approval system been in operation. It used to amaze me that I would get locked out for too much activity while deleting offers of fake degrees from every university in Australia, Canada, France, Germany while while the spammers were able to continue posts with about fake degrees from Netherland, Singapore, United Kingdom (I hadn't realised how many universities there are here!) and even the US (for some reason Taiwan comes after the US in the spammer alphabet).
You're one of the ones to say "thank-you" to, then, too!
(Maybe the US was listed as "States, United" ???)
M.
Okay, so here's my first post. Am I approved? (Nice to see some familiar folks here!)
ETA: Apparently, no approval was necessary--perhaps the new mandatory-approval-of-first-post system isn't in place yet. Will we who are here now be vetted once the system is up and running?

Where would you like a primary post for approval?
Also, is there a place where doctoral students are hanging out? I need to find some for a paper I'm writing; preferably drop-outs or re-starts.

This individual is soliciting study participants for their research (they've just come over from starting a thread on the CHE fora.) They were reminded of the rules there, which I believe are the same here, yes?

You are absolutely right, thanks for catching that. To discuss things with grad students is fine, solicitations seem to cross a line to me.
I agree that solicitations cross the line.
Nevermind then.
Thanks for letting me know before I get slammed with uglies.
So far, no real uglies on these new fora.

Hello! I've been a somewhat long-term lurker of the old CHE fora. I made an account of the same name on the old site, but it seems I joined at the final months of the fora, right when there were whispers of the transition to a new forum if I remember correctly. However, I immensely enjoyed reading many of the old threads on there, especially the incredibly long and humorous threads as well as the still invaluable advice.
I'll try to participate more as best I can. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Welcome, O Arboreous One!
Hi,
I posted a fair bit in the old days (around 2010ish) then dropped into intermittent lurking. I'm glad this place was created to take over when they shut it down over at the Chronicle. Too many of the communities I used to enjoy have been shut down in a similar fashion and not all of them managed to make a transition like this.
Anyway, I'll probably not be a very active poster, but I like to be able to check in on teaching advice threads particularly.

Hi all - I was active on the old forum long LONG ago (before facebook) and enjoyed the banter and community. Moved away from my involvement in these boards as I preferred the actual connections with actual people I know on other social platforms. Looking forward to reconnecting with anonymous "friends" old and new!

Just a big ol' faculty meeting in which the same discussions are had repeatedly, the usual know-it-alls state their pieces at length even after attempts to hush by those who are tired, and the clowns in the back of the room pretend they aren't really part of it and it's just an accident that they happen to have ended up here.

(You can keep the grading. I don't miss that part of teaching at all.)

Not really. But if you want to start out slow, just start with the more general threads--games, song in your head, venting, herding cats, birds, water cooler, post for stuff, favourite student emails, etc., and slowly expand from there when topics catch your interest.
Thanks, Paras. I will definitely check out some of those lighter threads!
Hi there. First post on this site, but I used the CHE forums a bit back when I was first on the job market. (Same username.) I'm now tenured and in faculty governance so I'm keen to stay in touch with faculty outside my university and get a broader range of perspectives on our challenges, both shared and unique ones. Thanks!

Visit some chatty threads if you need courage. People are usually pretty welcoming on gardening, dinner, and current reading.

And plants, and dinner, and...Oh, Polly said those already!
Well, anyway....Have fun! Welcome!

Welcome to the zoo! Most things don't bite. Much of the time. And when they do, it's usually not too hard.
The CHE fora were of great help in understanding how academia worked, or sometimes didn't, as a grad student and new professorback in the early 2000's. The discussions have provided helpful context for understanding my own. I've tended to post intermittently but lurk continuously, and I look forward to joining you.

Hello, all,
I'm a (very) longtime CHE lurker who's finally emerging from the shadows. I've been teaching for the past 14 years, the last 7 at a small, rural CC in an impoverished area. CHE threads were a source of excellent ideas, laughs, and encouragement, not to mention a place where I found camaraderie (and that is sorely lacking among the faculty at my current institution). Looking forward to (re)joining the community here. Be well! :)
