Ok, so I've got the shell of the forum set up.
In our trial period, I'm approving members manually, and pushing people to moderator status who expressed an interest.
If you notice things you are unable to do that you need to, please let me know and I'll adjust permissions. As things are, permissions are... long, so I went through and set some basics that need to be refined.
The main settings I changed from the default SMF install:
1) No attachments.
2) Members can't delete profiles or posts- only moderators.
2b) I can't seem to figure out how to set a time window for editing.
3) I set up post-count based user groups to try to ameliorate spam. We can adjust anything about these as we develop the board.
4) Guests can't search or view profiles.
Semi-long term, I can actually see it being worthwhile to keep membership needing a moderator approval. I don't think we have so many users that it will be prohibitive, and I think it will go a long way to cutting down on spam.
I'm certainly willing to do a once-a-day approval of everyone legitimate in the queue.
Thanks for setting this up. Everything looks pretty spiffy!
I look forward to the discussion on the new boards.
w00t! Nice work!
I'll putz around and see what I can see. It sure looks empty without all the threads. Poorest little forum.
I'm happy with manual approval of user accounts for the time being. I check this email account several times a day. Thumbs up on the current settings! One question with respect to 2(b): can you tell what its default setting seems to be? (I'll check back on this post a few times to see when or if the button disappears.)
EDIT: Silly me. I forgot I have far-reaching editorial powers.
Cool beans. I am still fast, but slightly less bulbous than when I started on the old forum.
Long live thefora.org :)
Hurrah! I'm so thrilled that we got this going so fast.
Indeed: W00T!!! Thank you for all your hard work!
Nothing like some extra opportunities for productive procrastination during final exam grading.
This is definitely an improvement over the older version of SMF, yet still feels like home. Thanks so much to eigen for setting it up, and to all the others who have provided their insight and expertise toward building the new fora.
Testing testing
Hello.
FYI, I am able to post apparently without manual approval. When I created my account, I received an email that said "Before you can login and start using the forum, your request will be reviewed and approved. When this happens, you will receive another email from this address." I did not receive a second email.
My guess is you were approved and one of us forgot to send the email.
When moderators approve users, we have to manually select the "send email", and I've been forgetting that part at least part of the time.
I can tell you that you were approved, however, according to our logs.
Thanks to everyone who did the hard work of moving camp for us!

I did not expect this to happen so quickly.
Color me impressed, and relieved to not be losing a community.

I think we're rapidly moving through alpha into an open beta, given the number of registered users and conversations.

Ah, different backgrounds.
My professional life doesn't gauge alpha/beta by number of participants. Instead, we gauge alpha/beta by how frequent the "how in the world would you do <very basic task>?" questions are from people who were users of the previous released version. Once those questions are down to seldom, the next release is tagged beta.

Hi everyone!
That's it, really. Thanks to all who made the effort to get this new place going.
I don't have the same username as I did on the other forum - ARGH. I didn't even think about it when I was setting it up, but I didn't post all that much anyway (enough that I can probably just get away with being a new poster), but my former username was "thatmoody." It didn't really mean anything (I said something one day about being moody and someone said "well, you're not THAT moody" and it was close to when I was having to set up a user account). This one means even less :D. One of these days I'll put some thought into a user account.

Welcome back! If you want to change your username at some point, the mods can do it for you. Just PM one of us.
FWIW, I'm posting with a new moniker myself, because I think it's time to retire the old one, which I used for stuff since I was a kid. But it's easy enough to figure out who I am/was.
EDIT: Also, we're up to 98 members, which is really not bad at all! That's certainly enough for a decent and healthy little community.
It's nice to see so many familiar monikers, although I decided to change mine. Somehow, I doubt I'll be or sound any different than previously!
Hi, everyone! This is great. Thanks so much to all who put in the work to get the site up and running. I have only had a few minutes to look around but already have a couple threads open to read more thoroughly. I'm happy to see so many valued fora folk giving the new place a try.

I keep telling myself the intent is probably Back At It, but I continue to giggle every time.
It reminds me of how, even after reading the explanation, Expat In UK was still more like a take-off on a satellite name and I couldn't unsee U Suk Prof once someone pointed it out.

My experience is identical to yours.
Since caps are possible, would BackAtIt be..hmmm, no the cap "I" is actually more suggestive, if anything.

I am very surprised to see myself in the top 10. I signed up to help be a tester, so I've been more active here than on the CHE forums in terms of post count. It won't last. Life will catch up with me, and I'll recede to the cellar from the sublime heights.
Polly, no problem, just tell me members get now...
And...err...no, I don't really want a scalp massage from the HE.....
I figured I'd just get a trailer hitch and attach my little cabana to it, and get the porpoises to drag it along the canal from the CHE form to this one.
When the time comes, of course.
I'll even let you set yours up next to mine, if you like.
But I should warn you that I sometimes practice French chansons at odd hours of the day (and night)...

I'm a heavy sleeper and I was one of the first into the Clubhouse* so I have good walls.
*I was not allowed into the Sweatlodge as an uppity, way-too-posty newbie way back when. Now, everyone gets into the Clubhouse if they like.
Should we transport the list of Clubhouse and Sweatlodge members?
Or was that a thread of its own?
I can poke around to see if I find it, if so.
M.
Thanks to all who worked to set this up. I'm mostly a lurker, but I have appreciated and learned lots from the CHE fora, and am pleased to have a space to interact with colleagues near and (mostly) far.
"The Lodgers" was a thread of its own (https://www.chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,34006.0.html) that was last updated in 2012.

I vote no. I think we should take the opportunity here to do a fresh reboot on any running list of very active members. Yes, let's celebrate long-standing members of the community with any milestones they like for post count in any combination and let's also be welcoming to new monikers whether they are new individuals or individuals taking advantage of the reboot to get a fresh start.
Thank you to everyone working to set up the new site. I have been mostly lurking lately, but I'm excited to be a part of the new site.
Good to see your moniker again!
M.
Thanks to everyone for setting up the new fora and getting it going so smoothly.
I was mostly a regular reader, sometimes poster to the CHE.
Not sure whether I will brave enough to post more here, but will definitely shift my reading to the fora.
Well, welcome again!

Who's up for the race to 500 posts?
To those who have worked so hard to preserve the community and aid in this relocation: THANK YOU. I'm not longer in academia. Despite a 5 year job hunt that has yet to lead me to where I want, I will not be returning. Yet I have made far too many friends here to abandon the fora group. The collective wisdom and support I have are priceless and I treasure them.

I just wanted to tell you all that I finished cleaning out the Clubhouse. I made sure to set the immoral porpoises free, before emptying the infinity pool. The Donkey and the HE are staying at my place for now, but I don't like how the MouseCat is looking at the HE.
I was ST in the old place. I had started out here with the same moniker but decided to do something else this time, so (in my singular fashion) gave myself something unpronounceable.

We need to get them moved into their new digs, pronto. Thanks for helping them make the move! Are the porpoises immortal or immoral? If the latter, exactly what are they doing? (Do I even want to know?) :-)
Hi :waves:
I wasn't a frequent poster at the CHE forum but often used it as a resource. Moved over here with y'all because of that and, well, FOMO. Here's my first post in order to move me from probationary status to member.
Welcome, everyone!
I'm happy to report that so far, the new fora seems much more active than the old.
It's funny; when you look at the old forum you see:
Most Online Ever: 2593 (September 16, 2012, 12:21:09 pm)
Heady times, no doubt. But this place seems pretty healthy. I really don't see it as anything but a shiny new updated version of the old place. Which it really is!

Given the number of posts over there mentioning over here, surely they will come.
Here is a scary thought. In another 4 years or so, a new poster may register, needing advice about graduate school, and it would be the Mouselet...
I've had similar thoughts, as my daughter and her husband are both employed in higher education. Are they here? Who knows?
Luckily, all of the embarrassing things we wrote about them are on the old Fora...
