Spent a month backpacking around Island the summer after I graduated from college, and would love to go back someday. Everyone younger than about 40 spoke perfect English and signs all had English-- no one there expects tourists to know Icelandic! We adapted to sleeping in the light surprisingly easily-- but then we were young, and tired at the end of each day.

You could also see the lava fields at Geldingadalir...

In the early summer:

Now, both that one (and a possible vent at Keilir) are of interest:

This August article has a very good opening shot (now impossible from land, the lava has covered nearly all the area used for photos then:

Maybe not eco-tourism, exactly, but...

Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Reprove not a scorner, lest they hate thee: rebuke the wise, and they will love thee.

Give instruction to the wise, and they will be yet wiser: teach the just, and they will increase in learning.

Thanks all!

mythbuster: love salmon, fish and seafood on general. The phobia can be (and has been) allayed if she can see land. I used to be stunned, but now just accept that phobias have nothing to do with reason. Worst case scenario we separate for a day of activities.
