Title: February Research Thread
Post by: Parasaurolophus on February 01, 2024, 07:51:51 AM
New month, new thread.

Monthly goals:

Stretch:

The stretch goal is pretty unlikely; it's a busy month, and I have less time than usual this semester.

Today, I'll work on the blurb and either the abstract or expanding the intro.

Wrote about 300 words, plus the blurb and an email to a publisher that I've put off for a bit. Whew.

Today, polishing up the blurb, starting on the conference abstract, and reading a new thing so I can continue expanding my intro.

Waiting for our newly-accepted paper to show up so that the DOI doesn't lead to a dead link.

February Goals

Today on a train from one city to another I made more progress on reading sources for my book manuscript. I am not back to the U.S. until a week from now so I can hope to finish reading sources by the time I land with trains and long flights in the next week. Then I can get to writing since I will be more organized. The vacation is going well, though!

Did that, and let the emails pile up. Not that I want to deal with them tomorrow, but...

Waded through a pile of email crap this morning, which sucked up all my limited time. I had hoped to work on writing up the abstract, but I might just end up reading a bit instead, since I doubt I'll have two free hands.

Done, and spent my intro time correcting Latin. Which is annoying, because in the 18th century they (1) quoted from memory, which makes it hard to find stuff, and (2) did weird typographical crap, which means you have to correct it before you can look for the correct quote. I'm almost done hunting it all down, though I ended by giving up on a thorny one. On the plus side, all that correcting and correctly citing has added a few hundred words. Only 4800 words to go!

The universe conspired to prevent me from getting much work done today, but I did manage to spend a couple of hours reading over the book chapter and making some preliminary edits. It should be mostly painless to get it turned around. Even though this is the project that is lowest in value to me at the moment, I'll probably prioritize it just to get it off my plate.

I did a little work on the book chapter today between teaching, class prep, and meetings. Shouldn't be a difficult turnaround at all, although seems like my colleague won't get to their part till March. I'll try to work on that a bit more this week and next, and then turn my attention back to book project #2 (unless something else emerges to take up my attention).

I also received an article acceptance today, which put me in a nice mood this morning.

I did a lot of reading over the weekend for book writing prep. I also requested a book in which I have the first edition from the 1990s and could benefit from the third edition in the 2010s. While I wait for the library to get back to me, I am about ready with sources organized by chapter that I need in my outline. I also have had some of the case study contributors send me their cases for minor edits, which is exciting. I have five months give or take to get this manuscript written which is frightening!

I finished a draft of chapter two for book project #2 today.

Tomorrow I should focus on the book chapter with colleague that we're contributing to an edited volume, if I can muster the will to do so. If I can't bear to do that, then there are a few other tasks I could turn to instead.

Argh, the library had given me the wrong edition of the book and I did not notice until I was typing up notes from it. I just re-requested the most recent version so I can cite the latest edition as a source. Nevertheless, I plunged into expanding the first chapter of the book manuscript. I forgot to track how many words I added but it is certainly "getting there" so I am happy! I also stumbled across a dissertation from 2023 that may be of interest. I blocked out time to work on the book manuscript every day so I hope to get into a groove and make reasonable progress!

I should really work on the book chapter with colleague, which is due back to the editor in mid-March, but I just can't bring myself to open up the dataset and start fiddling with it.

My other projects are in limbo (either under review or on coauthors' desks) and I'm feeling pretty disinterested in general at the moment, so I may just focus on some service and grading tasks for the next few days, then try to come back to research next week.

If anything, I may start tinkering with book project #1 again - getting an new chapter in motion.
