Title: April Research Thread
Post by: Parasaurolophus on April 01, 2024, 10:37:12 AM
New month, new(ish?) goals!

For me:

Stretch:

I'm free of the Newsletter now and our semester ends this month, so I should be able to manage all that.

But first, for today, I have to prep and record lectures. Ugh.

April Goals

These are the same goals as February and March. I am not doing well with the progress of either of these, but the good news is I did receive most of the case study drafts from the contributors to the book. For those who did not submit yet, I at least heard back from them so that is promising.

Did some of both (though I actually started on a new chapter), and started reading for a new referee report.

Did some of that. Also discovered that the only translation of a classic that is virtually unknown but super important in the history of my subfield... is rather incomplete (but also recent). So that's an interesting future project.

I'd like to write--I'm itching to--but maybe I should just streamline today. Otherwise it'll impinge on my writing most of the summer. Sigh.

I forgot to post Friday, but I set up the documents for each chapter in my book manuscript to have some structure in place. This was not on my goals for the month, but I came across a call for submissions and decided to adapt the rejected chapter my spouse and I had written last year for it. It would be really cool to still publish it so I hope this works. I also finally had my proof edits acknowledged by the editors for the book that has my chapter due out this month. I hope those get fixed because apparently they used AI for the edits and my wording was changed to nonsense, which is scary.

I received another case study draft from a contributor and provided feedback yesterday. Today, I wrote about 600 words on a chapter. It is not as much progress as I would like to make, but at least I had time in the morning as whenever I block writing time in the afternoon, my motivation wanes.

I did not pay too close attention to word count before I started, but I think I added around 1,000 to 1,200 words today on a chapter. I had initially blocked out the entire day for writing after a morning student meeting, but got distracted with other non-writing matters. I forced myself to write something this afternoon which is really tough on a Friday, but now I can celebrate by taking a walk outside! It is finally warm and not crazily windy where I live.

Quote from: Sun_Worshiper on April 01, 2024, 08:54:54 PMApril goals:
  • Make progress on paper #1 with colleagues - it would be great to get this off by the end of the month, but that will be up to my colleagues
  • Make progress on paper #2 with colleagues - this one is sort of in limbo
  • Make progress on paper #3 with colleague - R&R, ball is in colleague's court, but I'll be pestering him this month if I still haven't heard from him
  • Make progress on book project #1
  • Make progress on book project #2 with colleague

Stretch goals:
  • Apply for a small grant (or two)
  • Brainstorm and start outlining a new empirical article

I now have the book contract in hand for book project #2. I need to look it over and send it back (maybe tomorrow). In the meantime, I've been making little bits of progress on this project in my spare time - which is scarce at the moment due to teaching and some major service obligations that ate up most of my time in March and April.

I also sent out a small grant application this week, so we'll see if anything comes of that.

I finally started writing the chapter that is due May 31. I nudged my coauthor that I got started and an outline was in the draft so they can get started too. It is a little easier to write this (since we are both experts in the chapter topic) compared to the book manuscript (a topic I enjoy but feel imposter-y about). Onward...

I returned to the book manuscript after lunch and made more progress. I do not do a good job of tracking the words I added, especially because I bounced between three different chapters as I made connections to what I had already written. Alas, I think I wrote a "decent amount" and feel accomplished for the day!

Finishing my reply tojournal article, 4000 words. Almost half my own views on topic
So it is not enough for a full article. Question: maybe put my own ideas in an appendix?
because they are too long for footnotes. Journal doesn't accept end notes that I prefer.

And it is sent out for review. But not to the author, but he can respond to it.

Good on me.  I began making preliminary revisions to the manuscript.

Part of the issue is that one reader's report was so generalized it is hard to know where to start, just the sense that this 'paper is really good' but 'more needs to be done'; and the second reader's report was so overwritten and over-saturated with critiques, going off on tangents and suggestions from far left-field that had nothing to do with the argument, that it was worthless----probably someone doing their very first peer-review and getting too excited about it (I may mention that when I send this back).

But at least I got the ball rolling.

Apologies for my drop-off. I traveled last week to spend time with family, and have done very little on my book besides having a productive phone call with the final case study contributor who has not drafted anything and sending feedback on a case to another contributor.

I am still an anxious mess waiting on my sabbatical manuscript to get a decision. The journal status is "awaiting final decision" for five weeks now. It was submitted almost 10 months ago. I asked the managing editor two weeks ago for a timeline, and learned after the final review was submitted in March, an associate editor gets 30+ days to recommend a decision to the editor-in-chief, who gets another 7 days. Well, it has been more than 37 days and I just want a R&R, please!

Kind of in a holding pattern waiting for readers' responses on the monograph and doing a kind of scattered job search.

Been editing an old revise & resubmit, picking away at the writing, rethinking it a bit.  One reader's response was so all over the place that I don't know what to do with it; hu threw in everything possibly associated with the subject matter including the kitchen sink.  Considering including a note to this effect if and when I send it back.

Hoping for great R&R, darkstarry.
