Thanks for starting a new thread! These help me to get organized and it feels good to cross things off the list.

Goals for this month:

Stretch goals:

And of course I'll have to deal with papers that are currently under review, if they come back as acceptances, R&Rs, or rejections.

I fell off the January thread but will try to keep up this month. Today, I edited a draft of a manuscript for a post-doc in my lab and sent back to her with comments.

Wrote 900 words but didn't get to my point, so I can see that this is going to have to be one of those 'write it all out and then prune it all away' situations. Shrug. Frankly, it's easier that way!

Today, I did a run-through of an upcoming conference talk and looked through a set of reviews that a student and I recently received on a paper. This is a paper that was rejected after a revision at a different place, so I'm keeping my hopes low, but a revise-and-resubmit at this new journal is better than an outright rejection!

Yesterday, I added someone to the new project with my college friend. Hu left a toxic work environment last Fall and is adjuncting at hu's doctoral alma mater. Hu has very strong skills and familiarity with the topic, and my collaborator was fine with adding hu to the team!

Tonight I am meeting with my co-authors to finalize "second half of rejected manuscript from summer" and hopefully we will get that submitted ASAP!

My co-authors on the other rejected piece are started to work on some revisions. Since I am third author, I will wait until they tell me what I can do.

On the project with my subfield colleague, I got half of our interviews roughly transcribed with the snazzy Microsoft 365 transcription feature, and hu's GA is cleaning up the transcripts. Because I maxed out my allotted audio transcription for the month on the first day of the month, I am waiting for my spouse to let me use hu's work 365 account to do the other half of the rough transcribing some time after hu's work hours. Unfortunately, I tend to be busy most nights with work or research meetings or class, so I have not figured out when to do that yet! It will end up being over the weekend during the day, probably.

I'll try to finish knocking out a draft of the blog post today.

Mostly there. I've got a serviceable 900 words, anyway, and the remaining 300-500 are just a matter of plugging in shorter versions of stuff I have elsewhere, descriptions of source material, etc.

Had a productive writing meeting tonight with my co-authors. We are WAY over the word count for the journal, so we spent a lot of time cutting down and rephrasing sentences. Our main goal is get it down to the maximum word limit so we can submit!

Sorry to hear this, but good on you for working on it a bit more right away to send it out again.

I sent a student some feedback on a new experiment today and edited most of a chapter. Will try to finish the rest of the chapter next week but am feeling pretty done for now.

What a fantastic thing to find out on a weekend morning! I hope I get some good news soon since I have two revised manuscripts under review and a manuscript under review in its fourth journal. Also, my team has to chop about 700 words off of manuscript that is nearly done. I do a little each day but it is a bit daunting!

On the manuscript that is almost ready for submission, we are still 600 words over. I figure we should just submit it and see what happens at this point, since we were able to cut about 1,000 words already up to this point. I will see what my co-authors think tomorrow.

Goals for this month:

  • Finish draft of paper #1
  • Make progress on draft of paper #2
  • Continue collecting data for project corresponding to paper #1
  • Collecting more data for paper #2, to clean up some holes in the dataset
  • Keep shopping around op ed based on my research, and hopefully find a home for it
  • Send desk rejected article back out to a new journal
  • Get conditionally accepted article back to journal in hopes of unconditional acceptance

Stretch goals:
  • Get ball rolling on at least one new project (a few ideas, but they are just ideas at this point)

(Very) rough draft of paper #1 is complete. I'm going to sit on it for a week and then do a merciless edit, then have my co-author take a crack at it.  Maybe we can have it under review by early March, but I don't want to get ahead of myself.

Additionally, holes are plugged in dataset corresponding to paper #2. It would be good to add more observations/groups to the dataset, but now it is good enough to run a few regressions - something I'll get around to doing next week.

Busy day in town today, so I probably won't accomplish anything. But if I get the chance, I'll work on a book section. Maybe even start a fresh one, so that I have something to work with.

They seem to take me 2-3 days each. I only work on them for 1-1.5 hours at a time, but the distribution over a couple days really helps a lot. I don't think I'd get as far working on one for three hours straight.

We already completed a month of 2021. Post your February research goals here!

Goals

  • Finalize and submit "second half of rejected manuscript" to target journal with co-authors
  • Finish transcription of interviews for project with subfield colleague
  • Begin writing and analysis with college friend - we already received data through our request from a major organization!
  • Return to recently rejected manuscript to make revisions from feedback and submit elsewhere - my co-authors and I finally have a plan in place and a new target journal.

For the first goal, I spent most of the past few days cutting down the word count so we can submit. It will get desk rejected if it is one word above the max, so I had to cut over 1,000 words! Apparently I am masterful at such a task. That means our research team might have its last evening meeting (until we get a R&R to work on down the road maybe) tonight, so we will submit it tonight together, yahoo!

For the second goal, I did all of the rough transcriptions and now my subfield colleague's already compensated research assistant is cleaning them up. Hu's institution must have resources! I drafted the conference proposal for this yesterday (and it is already double the required word count, hence you can see I have a problem). It is due next week so I hope we can get it ready!

Goal 3 seems a bit stalled right now but that is because the colleague leading this study works for a certain governmental organization involved with a pandemic going on so...I will just leave hu be for now.

Goal 4 has placed the manuscript in the second author's hands for now, so I am waiting to hear from hu.

  • Finalize referees for divisional conference.
  • Continue trying to organize a panel for annual conference.
  • If I have the energy, try my hand at a book section.
  • If I have the energy, start prepping for a how-to-write-a-paper video.

Blah. I also put out a bunch of teaching fires, caught up on email, and commented on a friend's paper. So not a waste of a day, but not as productive as I could have hoped. Oh well, there's always tomorrow. And reading week (next week).

That is still a good amount of stuff to get done for one day! My inbox is a mess and I am struggling to get through all of the to-do items it is giving me, but I did send off some feedback on a proposed experiment today.

Sorry I have been incognito! Yesterday, my spouse and I decided to brave the coldest day with snow falling to drive my car farther than it has been in ages, to a bigger city an hour away for an oil change and recall inspection appointment. My spouse was off yesterday, though my institution stayed open even for in-person instruction, while the local school district closed for extreme cold. Today the institution closed due to power outages. We made it to and from safely, and my car is in good shape. I graded while sitting at the dealership, and then graded more last night when I got home.

Today, I worked more on my second revision of the manuscript that has four other authors. None of them have done anything since we exchanged a few emails about what needs to get done, but since all of us are located in extremely cold places with power outages (which is most of the country anyway), I am not going to bother anyone. I am actually almost done with the revisions (there were only four to address), but we have time so I can get their input.

Tomorrow, I am meeting with my subfield colleague to finalize our conference proposal which is due Thursday. The conference is scheduled to be in-person, which is uncertain of course, but in the city where my subfield colleague is located, so it seemed worth submitting to since I have to be at the conference anyway for my journal editor role. We are 19 words over and still have to add a few things, so we will be adding and cutting, which seems like my MO lately.

On Friday, I am part of a small team launching writing groups for a practitioner organization! I am so excited about this, as I have been encouraging a culture of research and data-driven practice since I chaired the organization's research committee many years ago. I look forward to this first meeting!

Congrats!

More grant work for me today. Grants are fun to write at the beginning, when I'm playing with new ideas, and at the end, when I'm making minor revisions and marveling and how straightforward everything seems. But right now I'm in the slog of the middle part, where it's easy to feel lost in the weeds and hard to turn complex ideas into easily digestible prose. I'm trying to remember that all grants feel like this in the middle and some of them eventually get funded anyway, but it's still a slog today.

Finished my grant draft, put it away to edit later with fresh eyes. I think there will still be a lot of work to do when I come back to it, but it feels good to be done with it for now.

Plus I put in four hours of work helping my partner with some editing work that just got dumped on her. WTF is wrong with academics? Citing is a basic skill. How do you go around with piles of incomplete entries which you haven't formatted at all to the book's requirements? (Especially when there's less than a week to the publisher's deadline!) And how the fuck do you go around mixing in-text citations, footnotes, and endnotes? WTF?

I always do this myself, and I generally do it as I go along. It takes me a lot less time than it would take someone else. (Plus, I always include all the info I need to include.) Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh I wanna drown myself in the toilet. *flush* *flush*

Yesterday's writing group launch went so well! It was so uplifting. Today I worked on my manuscript revision since the research assistant spent some time on hu's section yesterday. I also "bumped" into another co-author on a zoom meeting yesterday and in the chat, hu mentioned feeling badly about ignoring my correspondence about the revision, but I just asked hu to please review the changes we made for 15 minutes so hu will soon. I am so relieved! This revision is almost done!

I must say, my lists look like the ones everyone produces here! I realized that if I wanted, I have about 10 years worth of notebooks where I could go back and know, each day (or week), exactly what I had on my plate. What a strange archive.

On a different note, I finished a book manuscript today. It's about 50k words, which is relatively short, but I plan to send it to the publisher of my last book (which was 44k words). It's something a sequel to the last book.

I find that I deal with stress by writing. Not coincidentally, I started this book at the beginning of the pandemic. I lose myself in writing, which has been my way to cope with not being able to travel or see my family.

Congrats! That is amazing!

I got a conference proposal accepted for a conference next month, and we have to pre-record the session. Now I am trying to get my co-authors to find a time to do this soon, but it is very exciting. Today I am not doing anything research-related, so I will get back to baking!

Today I made incremental progress: I was able to get my three co-authors to select a time to pre-record our conference session in a few weeks. I will draft slides this week but they will be minimal, just to get us on track for our brief meeting to record the presentation. I also e-mailed the fifth author on the second revision of the manuscript (due in two weeks) to see if hu can at least check what I added to hu's section (and maybe add some content if relevant).

Yikes, this just made me realize I'd better double-check that my two (April and May) presentations don't need to be pre-recorded. I thooouught they were "live," but maybe I missed something!

   Thanks for the reminder....

I am happy to be useful in some way!

Last night I heard from a journal editor on a revision I submitted two months ago. Hu wrote that we responded to all reviewer comments well and the manuscript is great, but suddenly is too many pages over the maximum (not posted anywhere). I wish hu had told us this back when we submitted it in December, but I cut it down by four pages last night and resubmitted it. I was too excited that it might get published to wait any longer. I hope we get an official acceptance soon.

That's annoying, but also great news that your paper is so close to publication. Congratulations!

Today, our newest TT faculty member in the department met with me because hu wanted to collaborate. We already wrote a chapter together recently but hu wants to conduct a study with me. Hu found a really interesting target journal and we were brainstorming ideas. Hu was really happy with one I shared, so we meet next week to put the IRB materials together. I keep starting new projects though when I am trying not to, ahhh! Yet, it is so fun!

I guess I lucked out, as another "hiding" co-author ended up on a zoom meeting with me today so I convinced hu to do their part so we can wrap up the manuscript revisions. I also heard from the third "missing" co-author this morning via e-mail. I really want to submit the revision next week.

The meeting between my two colleagues went well. We have a plan to get the project going, and it should be a good experience to work with them both!

Goals for this month:

  • Finish draft of paper #1
  • Make progress on draft of paper #2
  • Continue collecting data for project corresponding to paper #1
  • Collecting more data for paper #2, to clean up some holes in the dataset
  • Keep shopping around op ed based on my research and hopefully find a home for it
  • Send desk rejected article back out to a new journal
  • Get conditionally accepted article back to journal in hopes of unconditional acceptance

Stretch goals:
  • Get ball rolling on at least one new project (a few ideas, but they are just ideas at this point)

While I accomplished most goals, It looks like I won't get the conditionally accepted article back out this month, and the op-ed has not found a home, despite my best efforts.

Oh well, hoping for a strong start to March.

Today was full of meetings, but I did manage to give comments on a few pages of a post-doc's paper today. Didn't even get through the whole intro, but at least it was something.

I put in another 1000 words on a fresh section, despite the REB meeting earlier today and all my class-related crap. Phew!

As I near the last day of the month, I am pleased that last night I submitted my second revision for the manuscript with four co-authors as everyone took a look at it before yesterday afternoon. I am so relieved! Only my first goal was completed this month. My colleague's GA is working on cleaning up my initial transcripts for goal 2. On goal 3, we met this past week with our third co-author, and have a plan in place that we are starting this week. I have not heard from my collaborators on goal 4 in awhile, so I assume one of them is still working on revisions and will get them to me when ready.

I currently have four manuscripts under review; two are second revisions so these will hopefully be accepted soon. The other two are under first review. I am supposed to get feedback on a book chapter under review in the next week or two also. One of my goals this year was to stop taking on new projects, but I have not done so well at this yet.

Gonna make a start on one last book section for the month, and I can use what time I have next month to clean them up a bit.

The month's report:

Quote from: Parasaurolophus on February 01, 2021, 12:00:50 PM

February:

  • Write blog post for Feb. 18.
  • Write 4+ new book sections.
  • Conference organization for April conference (ugh)
  • Conference organization for November conference (ugh)

Stretch:

  • Start working on August Chapter.

Managed five book sections, actually. Not bad! They all still need polish, but it's conjuring them into existence that's the hardest part.

Only 37 more sections to go by January 2022. It seems just about possible, maybe.
