Title: Halloween Plans?
Post by: clean on October 26, 2020, 03:52:11 PM
Are you planning to participate in any Halloween activities?  (Will you answer the door to the ghouls and goblins this year?)

Will you BUY candy?

(If you do, will you get the kind you like best, as you may end up with most of it to enjoy yourself?)

I have always blacked out and locked down the house for Halloween. Since the despised Daylight Savings Time has been extended to after Halloween, so as to keep the trick-or-treating little devils safer, I have been doubling down on that.

Childers don't walk to the top of our hilltain. It's too huge and too steep. But I got a box of candy to surreptitiously distribute among the neighbour and landlord childers.

For the landlord childers, the night of the 30th I'll make a candy trail going down to our small front garden, in which I'll bury a small mound of candies with a makeshift headstone.

That sounds interesting!!

Interesting.   In this community, covid has cancelled trick-or-treating,  IIRC.  In neighboring RI, the gov has cancelled it statewide.   What are the policies where you all are?

A few neighbourhoods have formed trick-or-treat bubbles, and won't be allowing anyone in from outside that neighbourhood. Dunno about the rest of the city.

TBH, it seems a little weird to me; trick-or-treating is mostly done outdoors, is often masked, and doesn't really involve close contact with anyone. I would think that the risks are generally pretty minimal, so long as children don't go around in large non-family groups and the treat-givers wash their hands and mask up, or just leave the candy outside for the kidlets to pick up themselves.

I would think that parties are a much bigger concern.

I'm judging a virtual costume contest. Partner has decorated patio, doors, windows, and is  eyeing the shrubbery. The Halloween cookie cutters just happened to appear on kitchen counter yesterday, so I suspect I'll be roped into cookie decorating.

Same as last year.  I dress up like the patriarchy and give the girls half as much candy as I give the boys.

It's been fun seeing all the Halloween and fall decorations in the neighborhood. Some have done a combo!

I have M&M's milk chocolate ghoul mix for my own snacking at the library. Speaking of M&Ms, any one else seen their Halloween TV commercial featuring Red and Yellow?

Weather is nice here in the evenings, so we might go to an outdoor bar for a drink, in simple costumes.  Will probably pass on giving out candy this year, under the circumstances.

We plan to throw candy at anyone who gets within 10 ft. of the front porch.

Trick-or-treating is set to go as normal locally, but all the local Halloween events have been cancelled.  That includes the usual Fall Festival at the library.  We're offering to-go goody bags on Friday and Saturday instead.  I hope we get a good response.

I personally will be out of town on Saturday and won't have trick-or-treaters at the house to deal with.

Our college is doing a drive through trunk or treat, I've got a bunch of pumpkins I'm planning on carving for our display.

Local town advertising "Children of the Quarantine" as its Halloween theme.  Since I pretty much don't go anywhere these days, I've added that to my list of no goes.

We are not giving out candy this year, but we did buy a bunch of candy to eat ourselves. I will probably also wear something Halloween-ish to work on Friday for the entertainment of the students who will be Zooming with me.

We don't have sidewalks in our neighborhood so we typically don't get any trick-or-treaters.  We're not planning to buy any candy since we're not going to hand any out and I don't have a lab full of students to give the leftovers to.
Folks around here are really going all out of decorating their yards this year.  Lots of giant inflatable critters, cobwebs, fake tombstones, holiday lights, etc.  I fear the neighbors are going to have another big, noisy party (not allowed, but who's going to check?).

No idea if anyone in our area will be trick-or-treating or not.  But we did get some candy just in case.  Plan is to bag it up (1 or 2 bars/bag) and set it out on a card table with a sign. No-contact trick-or-treating.

Our walking group will do a few miles of decoration gazing.  Sometimes we are mistaken for trick-or-treaters and return with loot.

A local church had a drive-thru Trunk Or Treat last Saturday.  Lots of cars and costumes.  It was a good show for a modest donation.  Some of them were really great setups.

And then there was that one couple who did a Christmas tree trunk and wore ugly sweaters.  Creepy.

Smolt had a good time.

The levels of snow, slush, and cold may help curtail things here quite a bit, I suspect...

It's a sad and depressing Halloween this year. Only one of the houses on my street has any decorations and a halfhearted one at that. The neighbor's kids are on their upstairs deck, calling out "Happy Halloween" to the very few passersby, but not trick-or-treating or sitting in the front yard with candy, as they usually do. People are being careful, now that the numbers have been going up.

My across-the-street neighbors have a light-tripped "Bwa-ha-ha-ha!" laugh track set up.

It's getting triggered pretty often, so some folks are out.

I swear, we're going to turn into the stereotypical 'old' people who yell, 'Get off my lawn!'

SO put a box of candy at the bottom of the driveway and was happy to see two little kids get some candy. Apparently, the third person to visit it was an adult/teen who grabbed the box and dumped it in a bag before the next group of kids could get it.

I was taking a nap, so I missed this excitement. If I were awake, I would have yelled something from the front porch. SO isn't as confrontational and is just ticked off about the little kids who missed out.

Edit: We didn't put all of the candy out, but at this point we're just saying 'Eh.' It's getting late and we don't have a lot of kids in the neighborhood.

We already are the old grumps: Turned off the lights so the little devils wouldn't be tempted to knock on the door or ring the bell!

Don't think anyone came by though -- everybody's afraid.

We kept out lights off, but we are on a a dead-end street, so we weren't expecting anyone really.
Also, Ricochet, my confused-about-everything cat, has a panic attack when the doorbell rings, so we though that we'd avoid having to go to the emergency vet because we gave the cat a heart attack.

Just took my dog for a walk and saw several houses with fun decorations - not as many as usual, but still glad to see some people getting into the spirit.

We're going out for dinner and some drinks tonight with a few friends (sitting outside and social distancing).

Our neighborhood had trick-or-treating almost as usual.  The neighborhood Facebook group polled people in advance, and it looked like a lot of people were planning to spread out candy on a table for kids to pick up.  Some neighbors made candy chutes with PVC pipe.  Others planned to throw candy at the kids from a distance.

Because we have a new-ish baby, we didn't go around the neighborhood, though I'd have liked to see people's candy chutes in action.  We have several professional engineers and a lot of fun, creative people in the neighborhood.

We attached a fake foot to a long cardboard tube and covered the cardboard with a pair of khaki pants.  Whenever someone rang the bell, the door opened slightly and the leg emerged, with small goody bags hanging from the toes for the taking.  We also put LED flickering candles along the front walkway as usual.

The kids and their parents were out in full force trick or treating earlier this evening. Many folks put tables in their driveways (or front stoop) and kids could help themselves. Plenty of fire pits to be enjoyed!  One guy hosted a party of invited fellow neighbors in his driveway.
The kids had to start earlier this year but it looks like everyone had a good time.

I dug out my DVD of "Peanuts" holiday collection and watched "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" :)

There was some lady in the news recently who kept a dummy (dead man made of cloth) lying on her front lawn starting around October 15. People freaked out when they saw it. She had a blast.

We put out a box with baggies of candy and brought back in nearly the whole thing.  Most years we give out about five pounds of candy and several toys.

I dearly hope that the grocery store is sold out of discount candy by Friday's weekly trip.  They still had discount candy last Friday so we have the five pounds that were bagged up two weeks ago to put out, the five pounds from Friday for us, and then the regular candy we just keep around.

I miss vegetables.

We never get trick or treaters in our neighborhood.  There are no sidewalks or street lights, driveways are long, and the neighborhood is mostly retired people.   I know from the local FB pages that lots of people were still planning to go out despite the rising infection numbers and governor's guidelines (I don't think they were orders but were sternly worded).  My mother typically gets more trick or treaters than she would prefer but put the candy down at curbside and didn't have any incidents this year.  Turning off your lights is supposed to be a sign that you are no longer handing out candy, I think, but some don't seem to know that.  Youngest was planning to go to a friend's house for a party with 3 friends, but her boyfriend and his family tested positive, and though her tests have been negative she has had some symptoms, so they cancelled that event, thankfully.  Just not a good time to take chances given the circumstances in my state and county.  I am not a huge fan of Halloween myself, but my oldest and youngest, my ex, and a couple friends just love it, so I feel bad for those who didn't get to have their usual fun this year.

The wife and I made a six-hour round trip drive to another state to visit my mother. She lives in a retirement home and I had not seen her since February. The visit was supposed to be for one hour, with masks, socially distant, indoors in a common room without any other occupants. When we arrived we discovered some confusion among retirement home employees. Our home state is now on the "not safe" list and, not having been informed of the need to get a Covid-19 test within 72 hours of our arrival, our visit was limited to fifteen minutes outdoors.

Still a far better Halloween than a year ago, when a physician telephoned me after I had had a simple blood test the day before as part of an initial appointment. The physician said "Go to the ER now. You're in danger of cardiac arrhythmia." I spent six hours in the ER on a cardiac monitor while getting an infusion, and the rest of the night in the hospital for observation.

The visit limitation must have been quite the surprise and disappointment, spork. However, I'm guessing those 15 minutes were precious and meaningful for all of you. Hope the next visit can be much longer.

Admirable how you ended your post on a positive note.  Glad you're well.
