New month, new(ish?) goals!
For me:
- Finally finish straggling book chapter.
- Comment on an acquaintance's projected reply to a paper of mine.
- Start streamlining translation 1.
- Start a new book chapter.
Stretch:
- Start work on a chapter contribution due in August.
I'm free of the Newsletter now and our semester ends this month, so I should be able to manage all that.
But first, for today, I have to prep and record lectures. Ugh.
Goals:
- Open up revise & resubmit and reader's comments; begin to redraft. Possible to finish by end of month?
- Read for major project #2
- Begin drafting Introduction (much is in my head) and outline for proposal----aim for June?
Three lectures prepped, two recorded.
April goals:
- Make progress on paper #1 with colleagues - it would be great to get this off by the end of the month, but that will be up to my colleagues
- Make progress on paper #2 with colleagues - this one is sort of in limbo
- Make progress on paper #3 with colleague - R&R, ball is in colleague's court, but I'll be pestering him this month if I still haven't heard from him
- Make progress on book project #1
- Make progress on book project #2 with colleague
Stretch goals:
- Apply for a small grant (or two)
- Brainstorm and start outlining a new empirical article
Time to return to my book chapter on the commute today. And I'll start streamlining T1, too.
April Goals- Write some chapters of my book manuscript
- Work on book chapter due in June with colleague
These are the same goals as February and March. I am not doing well with the progress of either of these, but the good news is I did receive most of the case study drafts from the contributors to the book. For those who did not submit yet, I at least heard back from them so that is promising.

Did some of both (though I actually started on a new chapter), and started reading for a new referee report.
More of the same today: streamlining T1, writing for the book.

Managed a bit of both.
I don't anticipate any writing today, just reading for a referee report and streamlining T1.

Did some of that. Also discovered that the only translation of a classic that is virtually unknown but super important in the history of my subfield... is rather incomplete (but also recent). So that's an interesting future project.
A spot of streamlining and a spot of writing today, I hope.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on April 05, 2024, 08:40:27 AMA spot of streamlining and a spot of writing today, I hope.
Just a bit, but every bit helps.
Another tiny bit today, though time may not permit much.

I wonder if I should revise my goals to just get the T1 streamlining off my plate ASAP...
I'd like to write--I'm itching to--but maybe I should just streamline today. Otherwise it'll impinge on my writing most of the summer. Sigh.
I forgot to post Friday, but I set up the documents for each chapter in my book manuscript to have some structure in place. This was not on my goals for the month, but I came across a call for submissions and decided to adapt the rejected chapter my spouse and I had written last year for it. It would be really cool to still publish it so I hope this works. I also finally had my proof edits acknowledged by the editors for the book that has my chapter due out this month. I hope those get fixed because apparently they used AI for the edits and my wording was changed to nonsense, which is scary.

Forgot to report. I did a goodly chunk of streamlining. There's a lot left, but I'm about 17% done, so that's good.
Today, streamlining and finishing reading for a referee report.

Manuscript has been submitted. No we wait to see what miseries Reviewer #2 has up their sleeve for us.
Streamlining T1, maybe starting to write my referee report.
I received another case study draft from a contributor and provided feedback yesterday. Today, I wrote about 600 words on a chapter. It is not as much progress as I would like to make, but at least I had time in the morning as whenever I block writing time in the afternoon, my motivation wanes.

Just did a small bit of T1.
Today, I have to check proofs, and they'll be annoying and time-consuming. After that, streamlining T1.

Done the first, big chunk of #2.
Definitely T1 work today. Maybe I'll start writing my referee report; if not, then tomorrow.

Only got a tiny bit done. Oh well.
Looks like I won't have much time today, so just going over T1. Unless I have a chance to start writing my report.
I did not pay too close attention to word count before I started, but I think I added around 1,000 to 1,200 words today on a chapter. I had initially blocked out the entire day for writing after a morning student meeting, but got distracted with other non-writing matters. I forced myself to write something this afternoon which is really tough on a Friday, but now I can celebrate by taking a walk outside! It is finally warm and not crazily windy where I live.

Well, managed a bit.
Bit of grading, bit of T1.

I now have the book contract in hand for book project #2. I need to look it over and send it back (maybe tomorrow). In the meantime, I've been making little bits of progress on this project in my spare time - which is scarce at the moment due to teaching and some major service obligations that ate up most of my time in March and April.
I also sent out a small grant application this week, so we'll see if anything comes of that.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on April 13, 2024, 08:48:07 AMBit of grading, bit of T1.
The world conspired against me, and nothing was done. I am pretty annoyed about it.
Well. Working on T1, I guess. And a bit of grading.
Hoping to make real progress on the grading, followed by streamlining. Maybe even starting to write my report...
I finally started writing the chapter that is due May 31. I nudged my coauthor that I got started and an outline was in the draft so they can get started too. It is a little easier to write this (since we are both experts in the chapter topic) compared to the book manuscript (a topic I enjoy but feel imposter-y about). Onward...

Acceptable progress on all three fronts.
I worked on my book manuscript this morning. I might return to it later since I got into a groove, but it is time to meet a student for lunch.
Grading and T1ing today.
I returned to the book manuscript after lunch and made more progress. I do not do a good job of tracking the words I added, especially because I bounced between three different chapters as I made connections to what I had already written. Alas, I think I wrote a "decent amount" and feel accomplished for the day!

I worked a bit on book project #2 today and yesterday. I'm ready to dedicate myself to it now that we have a contract in place and so I've been getting into a zone on the chapter that I'm currently chipping away at.
I also pestered my coauthor on paper #3. No word yet from him, but I'm sure he got the message.
A bit of grading and a bit of T1 today.

Grading and T1.
Today, I've got a letter for a colleague to update/write, and marking to do.
Edit: eep, remembered I have to defend a new course for the department before the faculty senate committee. Sigh. So much for getting stuff done.

Progress acceptable.
Finishing my reply tojournal article, 4000 words. Almost half my own views on topic
So it is not enough for a full article. Question: maybe put my own ideas in an appendix?
because they are too long for footnotes. Journal doesn't accept end notes that I prefer.
And it is sent out for review. But not to the author, but he can respond to it.
Mostly have to grade today, though I'd like to do a small of chunk of T1. We'll see.

All done save for stragglers and inputting.
Inputting grades, then... just streamlining T1, and maybe making more headway on that referee report.
Been doing some creative writing and I keep getting newspaper assignments.
But I am posting this here so I will make myself do it: tomorrow I will open up that revise-and-resubmit and readers' comments and make a plan.

T1 and refereeing today. Got a new referee request this morning, too, from a top subfield journal which specifically noted my 'general expertise', which is nice.

Good progress on T1 (I wish I didn't keep finding errors!), and read the new paper. No writing, though. Alas.

Good on me. I began making preliminary revisions to the manuscript.
Part of the issue is that one reader's report was so generalized it is hard to know where to start, just the sense that this 'paper is really good' but 'more needs to be done'; and the second reader's report was so overwritten and over-saturated with critiques, going off on tangents and suggestions from far left-field that had nothing to do with the argument, that it was worthless----probably someone doing their very first peer-review and getting too excited about it (I may mention that when I send this back).
But at least I got the ball rolling.
Some T1, some refereeing.

Wrote and submitted the report, did a good chunk of T1, cleaned out my inbox, submitted an invoice, sent off my summer syllabus for approval, and had a department meeting.
A productive day!
Woke up to a new referee request (the third this month). Weird how they always cluster like that.
Today, just some T1ing. Might start reading for the new referee report.
Apologies for my drop-off. I traveled last week to spend time with family, and have done very little on my book besides having a productive phone call with the final case study contributor who has not drafted anything and sending feedback on a case to another contributor.
I am still an anxious mess waiting on my sabbatical manuscript to get a decision. The journal status is "awaiting final decision" for five weeks now. It was submitted almost 10 months ago. I asked the managing editor two weeks ago for a timeline, and learned after the final review was submitted in March, an associate editor gets 30+ days to recommend a decision to the editor-in-chief, who gets another 7 days. Well, it has been more than 37 days and I just want a R&R, please!
Kind of in a holding pattern waiting for readers' responses on the monograph and doing a kind of scattered job search.
Been editing an old revise & resubmit, picking away at the writing, rethinking it a bit. One reader's response was so all over the place that I don't know what to do with it; hu threw in everything possibly associated with the subject matter including the kitchen sink. Considering including a note to this effect if and when I send it back.
Hoping for great R&R, darkstarry.
T1 or referee reading today. Time is short.

I did referee a couple of papers, which added some work. Oh well. I'll try again next month!
