Title: November Research Thread

You know what to do.

November:

Stretch:

Today, I'll do a bit on the solo project and I have page proofs to look at for a book review, and some contract stuff to look over.

I am excited that I am actually on-time to participate in a monthly thread for once. I don't seem to have as much going on as you guys.

Main goal: Complete rough draft of Article #1.

Secondary goal: Complete abstracts of Article #2 and #3.

Tertiary goal: Find out wtf is going on with Article #0 (#0 because it was submitted prior to my new job) and Review #0.

Try not to think about book manuscript feedback potentially being terrible.

Before I list my November goals, I had an epic few days so I must share:
I got an acceptance on the revised manuscript with my friend on the fun commentary piece and it will come out before the end of the year!
I submitted the chapter revision yesterday.
I presented on my book topics to another institution today which was invited.
Our grant team submitted our proposal today!

Last figure written up, two other figures fixed up for a total of ~1200 words today. Also proofed the review and signed the contract stuff.

Today, it's mostly pruning and smoothing of the intro. I'll have to decide whether a couple other issues merit sections--probably not, at this stage. I can always add them later.

Then I should mark this pile of AI essays.

All done fiddling with the translation, and the proposal is nearly ready.

Yesterday I had my "casual research conversation" about my sabbatical project to my college colleagues. The turnout was pretty good and it was fun to talk about my work. The library folks who helped me also came and answered some questions about the support and technology they provided me.

I made some great progress on paper #1 over the last few days. I sent it to my coauthor today and I am cautiously optimistic that we will get it out the door sooner than later (not going to set myself up for disappointment by saying that we submit it this month, but maybe by the end of the year if I can get my often cautious coauthor to agree).

Spouse and I got a revise decision on our chapter. I find the reviewer's comments to be frustrating and the editor did not write anything besides that we need to revise the chapter for consideration. The reviewer seems out of touch with the book's topic and chapter requirements, so I am being a little defensive in my responses. The reviewer complained our writing was easy to read so it is not scholarly (I did not know we had to make it painful to read to qualify as academic writing). The reviewer snarked about our formatting and citation style (of which I am an expert and lead workshops on this, and there is nothing wrong with it in the manuscript). Also, the editor said the revision is due "11/31" which is a date that does not exist. AHHHHHHH! /end rant

I've made pretty good progress this week on the book chapter. We have a direction and the data analysis is looking good enough. I spent the morning filling in my parts of the text and should be ready to hand it on to my coauthor by tomorrow afternoon/evening. In the meantime, teaching duty calls...

Another day of solid progress on paper #1 and the book chapter. I also put my RA to work on something new related to my book project, so there is some degree of progress being made there as well.

I started working on a new chapter of my book today. So far I've just done some outlining and written a couple of paragraphs, but I hope to do a bit more before I run out of steam. And starting is the hardest part for me, so it has been good to get the ball rolling.

Everything else is on a co-author's desk at the moment, so I can give this a good amount of attention for now.

This is not really about research but I am not sure where to write this. About a year and a half ago one of my coauthors on a book died in a tragic accident. I may have mentioned it here then. This past weekend, my other book coauthor died in a tragic accident. This person and I also served on boards together for a few professional organizations. They both were young, and I am in shock. Been working solid, every day, sometimes all day with frequent breaks and distractions (like The Fora) so I don't get depressed.

The plan is to have all my ideas and observations down in their respective chapters by the end of December and then to infuse the research where it belongs in the manuscript in January and February.  It's possible with my current momentum.

I have applied for a couple of nonacademic jobs, and I am a little afraid ironically that I will get one, and this has been fueling my progress to get as much done as I can while I can.

Trying to do a little creative writing and some magazine writing on the side, would like to poke at that old revise-and-resubmit at some point too.
