Title: Paralysis Analysis Renewed!
Post by: mamselle on June 06, 2019, 01:09:40 PM
So, this thread has gone and returned at the top of the leaderboard from time to time.

It was begun by prytania3 on Dec 31, 2006 (early in the days of the then-new CHE online forum format) with this post:

   (presently still at: https://www.chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,32528.0.html )

QuoteSo I'm back from my holiday trip and am in a state of paralysis or ennui, or both. First, my place needs cleaning, which I planned to do this morning, but instead I read the New York Times cover to cover (or byte to byte since it was online) and watched all the online videos about Africa and China, while, of course, intermittently checking new postings on the fora. Now I am posting and watching Law and Order reruns. (There's actually one on now I haven't seen.)

Aside from my house being in disarray, I also want to do my syllabi (or syllabuses as is now the proper term--yeah, I know, it's to choke on) instead of waiting until the last minute, which is my usual tradition. What's more, I'm using a new book for a course and need to finish reading it. I also need to check my school email and see what I'm missing. and I should also answer some personal ads if I want to keep my dating momentum up. And did I mention the laundry? And going to the drug store? And grocery store?

I also have some "fun" plans, but they are not motivators as I'm in one of those "nothing seems like fun" moods, and the stock market doesn't open until Wednesday.

I know I can't get everything done today, but I'd like to get a start, but it's just not happening. I need some really practical way to get started. I'd like to get a lot done today and tomorrow because as I said, the stock market is back open on Wednesday, and I'll want to trade.

And to any well--meaning newbies, please do not suggest I'm depressed. I'm manic depressive, so that's a "Duh." And I have a psychiatrist, and I'm taking my medication.

I need some concrete steps to start moving. And oh, I have seen this Law and Order after all.

It has had moments of definite usefulness to others, and I have most recently found it to be really helpful in a crunch situation, then wandered away, then came back again a couple of times.

Both because I don't want to lose its continuity with earlier threads and because I hope not to be the only one on the thread all the time, I'm re-starting it here!!

(And for those who wonder, as I did, how to make the silly 'copy but not quote' thing work: hit "Quote" first, then go up and erase the leading [ quote ] 's and the trailing ones that say [ / quote ] and you'll get the text without the quote background stuff.

Also, the S strikeout function is not too hard on a phone; just type (I'm adding spaces so it won't actually activate a strikeout)

   [ s ] text [ / s ] and it will line out the things you've finished.

Skilled PA'ers can do this in their sleep, I'm told.

M.

-=-=-=-=-

After a loong hiatus, Good morning to: anyone else who's on the thread!

Having a performative space for planning at this level of detail helps aerate it and keep it dynamic. It was the key to surviving last month's pressures of trying to prep a presentation while doing 16 other things at once. Hoping to avoid some of the need for the pressure (do some things in little bits as I can, although that sometimes gets sidetracked (something else "Pops the stack," I think they used to say of computer line-of-work triage). But coming back to this is useful. (Reminding myself).

Today:
Blog paper sent in, accepted for their newsletter instead of the blogsite--which is fine! -- Yea!
Pix sent, waiting to be sure they went through. Yea!

NP stuff has been on the back-burner due to the above; need to catch up on:
Invitation letters to potential writers for the q6 mo magazine - finish list, do texts, send out
Thank you's for donors, need to get list finalized, get USPS addresses, do letters, send (have to get envelopes ready)
Tweets on previous magazine, just finished, set up 6, send out one q 3 days upcoming - need to do next
Check on details of board meeting upcoming, conference associated (or not), etc.
Followup to replies on branding poll, communications lists, etc. - started, not all received, yet...can't make 'em reply...
Finish QBks entries - more to go inreconcile and do new raw report One report run, need to do reconciliation
Figure out way forward: think about job overall, find alternatives? - start thinking about this....
RR stuff has also been back-burnered, need to catch up on that:
Abstract based on last paper done and sent in on time, received confirmation email, they'll let us know.
Whether or not that one goes through, I have another venue for that and a releated paper which I'm pretty sure will take it
Asked that group's coordinator if they'd entertain an abstract, awaiting reply
Either separate text-related study to go with it or both together
        So, still need to:
           1) Find comparanda
           2) Org. files, esp those torn apart prepping the most recent abstract

Grocery foraging?
Is there a swing dance Sat. night? Find and go, if so!
Collapse!

Longer term planning:
Acc - Students, theory book, own warmups, play out more, practice both kybds
Give music, theory pages to students to work on.
Review modes, create teaching pages for (14-yr-old!) student who requested them
Find instructional songbook for voice student now he's ready for more.
Revw. 20 Is. Dnc. tunes 'n' dances (bar/bat mitzvah options arise)- mk notebook w/both together.
Bgd - Liked doing the blog...hmmm....another one?
Could do on Teachers' stones, Doctors' stones, others.
Work on 17th c. Ch. 1 stones/OCBG bk- get pix, print all, play rummy w/those, too. Write up results. - started
Think about new tours on HSqMins, stonecarvers' homesites, religs Art&Arch for NP2 next year.
Prep tours, ck on linkup with  Summertours website guys, collusion possible? - find them and ask!
DIcn - Keep on with RR, get back to booklet chapter along with that
Do separate thing on RR alone?
      Ditto KDnc mat's?
Sns/LtDnc - Write SAS once more, correct chapel name, get pix, forward to editor, and write my section/article.
Promised short Fr. article inclusion needs more info, N/A to emails: call? Write USPS? Can't go...!
Look up serieG info on chapitre for calvaire, any bkgd missed? Finish article, send for Fr. edits.
Promised short standalone article needs liturgical office backup. Go see m'films...when? Backed up!
Compile promised litdnc worksforward to sympathetic OSPguy soon, before he forgets!
DIcon- No word on poss. article from last month's conference paper, inquire about that...
Do-- Draft final article from that, get more comparanda done, take the long view, write it up.
Since none to few in the previous conference gave any critique I'll have to go further afield.
See about submissions by invitation for their journal: no evidence of that so far. Find out.
Type up the scraps of text I started to set up to work from, use that to develop it further.
Remember to alternate between compiling sources and just thinking about the work.
Remember to print up pix, do "match-up rummy," into different categories.
Remember to ck with musicians I'll want to teach Renaissance dances at next year's banquet.
NP - Giving up on setup for fall conference, needed to meet co-conveners sooner, get out now--I think ED sees this now.
SMag needs attention: next topic, get this one further along, etc.
   Website changes, ck on followup
CGs need to take off, how support further?
   Do BStdy on Wshp/Arts
Develop alt-inc options if NP goes south, as it could...DIN
Do Qbks entries, clean up further, run new reports, do new trial bal. (Tomorrow...)
Start next CC, Twts, Contact friendly colleague, get ideas (call/write again, he ghosted on me)

Overall:
  Apt. needs attention.
  Money decisions to make
Two friends moving, need more help; one actively moving now, one more drive might do it.

What about an external hard drive?

They do crump from time to time, but I get a lot of flexible use out of mine.

More PA after I get off the bus

What about an external hard drive?

I'm not clear on the referent for this advice.  I want to be in the room of my house called the library surrounded by books as I convert the card catalog.  I could just take the relevant drawer of cards into the room of my house called my office to type on the desktop computer if I desired, but I like to be able to go over to the shelf to double check things with fewer steps and no intervening stairs.

I have to be physically at the office my employer provides for me to work on a computer that is isolated from the world to work on the script.  Putting an external hard drive there is a firing offense with likely criminal charges filed.

However, I can mark the documentation for the lawyer as being done.

After another loong hiatus, during which time several things have changed: hello to Polly and anyone else who's on the thread!

The Ex. Ass't job I've had working for the Ex. Dir of a NP is looking like it's in jeopardy; I'd give it 'til October--maybe December at the latest. I could be wrong, and we could get some unexpected funds in, but I think after three situations where people thought it was going to die, it really is now (and it's a 135-year-old organization, which is kinda sad...but...one can only do so much).

So, in addition to the ongoing research-y stuff, I've just lately updated both my resume (for EA work) and my CV (for teaching) and am starting to look at stuff that might pay me money and not be too dreadful to do.

I'm grumpy because I've been warning about this, and did a full spreadsheet to show why; the ED then said, "Oh, yes, I thought that might be the case" as if they hadn't pushed back every other time I'd brought it up.

Anyway:

1. Start renewing my resume on Monster, Linked In, and all their friends.
2. Start looking at websites for things I'm interested in, talking to folks, etc.
3. Keep working on the research-y stuff
4. Start doing close-out things that the NP will probably require so they're done sooner rather than later if I get a nibble and need to hop nimbly over the candlestick to my next job.
5. Tours start in 2 weeks: new bodice? new handout materials? Think about sites w/construction in the way...grrr....
6. Play out on Wednesdays? Make a regular thing of it? Might be worthwhile--doesn't bring a lot in, but good exposure.
7. Start looking at my own spreadsheet-like stuff....keep things in balance.
8. Do my own Tweets for tours....start with the article that just went in, plus schedule as usual, and Op-ed piece that came out.

Today:
NP stuff on the back-burner is starting to be caught up:
Invitation letters to potential writers for the q6 mo magazine - finish list, do texts, send out - A few more to do
Thank you's for donors, need to get list finalized, get USPS addresses, do letters, send (have to get envelopes ready)
Need back bank info for pre-18 mo. online sources, ask for those.
Finish QBks entries - more to go in,  reconcile and do new raw report Second report needed, ck typos, do reconciliation
Figure out way forward: think about job overall, find alternatives? - start thinking about this....Yup (saw it a month ago, as this shows)

RR stuff has also been back-burnered, need to catch up on that:
Abstract based on last paper done and sent in on time, received confirmation email, they'll let us know.
Another venue for a related paper may take it Asked that group's coordinator if they'd entertain an abstract, awaiting reply
Started the abstract, did a couple drafts, need to collate and start a final file, so it's ready when they say "yes," (of course!)
Either separate text-related study to go with it or both together
        So, still need to:
           1) Find comparanda
           2) Org. files, esp those torn apart prepping the most recent abstract

Grocery foraging? Maybe.
Sat: Friend's birthday/dinner party; there's also a swing dance Sat. night--might try to go to both!

Nope: he still wants to play with the big boys; I can only do damage control, but I'm NOT doing all the work we'd have done
if they'd gotten back to us 6 mo. ago: It's too late for PR, we have other priorities, he's not well...it's really stupid!

I know this is long and scary but pixels are cheap and anyone else is welcome to join (or use the other, shorter sprint thread) so I'm not going to apologize! I just wish I could, like Octo, cross off more stuff at a time!

Progress is all that matters. And yes, pixels are cheap. You have an impressive list!

There's nothing wrong with a long list (I tend to make them long so I don't have to stress over remembering stuff - I know it's on my list). I'm traveling this summer and this week in particular I'm not being very productive, by design. The last four weeks have been a frenzy of teaching and learning and completing a big research project by a 6/30 deadline. I'm so tired. Seriously, doing nothing is underrated and that's mostly what I'm doing for a few days this week. However, I will start building the pre-fall-semester (PFS) to do list and the FSS (fall-semester-stuff) to do list soonish just so I can at least feel I'm writing things down. Fall is going to be insane because I'm taking on a new position that involves doing stuff I've never done before, and it's all a bit scary.

OK, back again!

Let's see:

The Ex. Ass't job I've had working for the Ex. Dir of a NP is [still, to me] looking like it's in jeopardy; our president says not, but I do the books and I don't see as much income as outgo....so I'm still going to stay worried until I see differently. So:

1. Updated resume (EA work) renewed on Linked In, and indeed; - still have to do Monster and all their friends.
2. Start looking at websites for things I'm interested in, talking to folks, etc. - ongoing
3. Keep working on the research-y stuff - also ongoing - one topic's stuff moving slowly, but it's moving.
4. Start doing close-outs so if I get a nibble and need to hop nimbly over the candlestick to my next job--started, problems...grr..

8. Do my own Tweets for tours....start with article that just went in, schedule as usual, and earlier Op-ed piece. - one done, more to do

It's not a competition! :-)

I try to write everything down so I don't forget and so my brain can let go and not stress over remembering. I'm sure that isn't logical, but whatever.

I do the same thing with a small notebook I carry everywhere to capture a task as it arises to then be transferred at the end of the day to the post-it cork board that is a whole wall in my at-work office.  First-time visitors to my office often need a couple minutes to just stare at the board since apparently my colleagues feel limited to tiny white boards as their planning surfaces.

I'm not replicating that list here, but only hitting the high points for the next week or so.

Sounds good. I tend to work the other way around but similarly.

I'm moving offices over the summer (while I'm off campus). I hope someone thought to move my giant whiteboard...

Greetings, Polly and Octo! I hope you're each having fun somewhere!

Today-only list:

PR for tours out by noon
Skirt, chemise, drawers sewn in alternation with
Three short items in need of editing.

Food and sleep as required...still resting here and there, now and again, from the 36-hour moving marathon on M-T with a friend who seems to confuse "pack" with "moving stuff around in the room" and "putting a box or two near the door every few hours."

More later, I've developed a whole list of "Pack and Move are not just 4-letter Words" ideas...maybe I'll start a thread...later...

Food, PR, home to edit and sew.

Tours start Saturday, must be ready and rested!

Coming back from 2 weeks out of the office, I need to:

(1) review all my emails

(2) get caught up on 10-12 projects

(3) meet with ~30-40 faculty members regarding their proposals

(4) find out what my benefits truly are (we both need some dentistry)

(5) determine whether I can light a fire under my parents so that they'll make the oh-so-crucial decision to appoint me power of attorney for them

(6) assorted other things, like wishing hard for the world to change back into the less-crazy format it had prior to certain elections

Those sound like good goals.

I did two editing things, one more to do; worked several hours on book stuff, and held off doing parts of the new dress until I have the bodice fabric....but bought more of the necessary notions.

Edit item no.3 starting....

      ....

          .....now.

So now I'm getting email referrals to everything under the sun. Sigh. If only a few were within 100 mi. of my home.
5. Tours start in 2 weeks Saturday!: new bodice? new handouts? Visit sites w/ongoing construction...grrr--started, coming soon!
6. Play out on Wednesdays? Make a regular thing of it? Might be worthwhile--doesn't bring a lot in, but good exposure--pondering
7. Start looking at my own spreadsheet-like stuff....keep things in balance--not yet.
8. Do my own Tweets for tours....start with article that just went in, schedule as usual, and earlier Op-ed piece. - one done, more to do
9. Updated CV (teaching)- now on my Academia site (but the old one won't go away and I just got three hits on it!)

Today:
NP stuff on the back-burner is starting to be caught up:
Invitation letters to potential writers for the q6 mo magazine - finish list, send out - Stalled, more to do - still more needed
Thank you's for donors, need to get list finalized, get USPS addresses, do letters, send (have to get envelopes ready)

Need back bank info for pre-18 mo. online sources, ask for those--do draft letter today. - Still need this!
Tweets on previous magazine, just finished, set up 6, send out one q 3 days upcoming - still need to do next
Check on details of board meeting upcoming, conference associated (or not), etc. - Done, 'Huit clos'...go to TnC after?
Followup to replies on branding poll, communications lists, etc. - done, still not all received, yet...can't make 'em reply...
Finish QBks entries - Issues. Reconciliation not possible w/o a) new laptop w/QBks, replc dying old one; b) Bk sends data link
Figure out way forward: think about job overall, find alternatives? - still thinking about this....now 2 month ago, as this shows)

RR stuff has also been back-burnered, need to catch up on that: Same
Abstract based on last paper done and sent in on time, received confirmation email, they'll let us know.

Same - Again, funny how that happens: every week it needs to be done again...!!
Sat: Swing dance Sat. night--try to go ! None until after tours finish in August/early Sept.

- working on ideas, could use to develop text for the book...
Work on 17th c. Ch. 1 stones/OCBG bk- get pix, print, play "gravestone rummy." Write up results. - 5 7/75 stones done
Think about new tours on HSqMins, stonecarvers' homesites, religs Art&Arch for NP2 next year.
Prep tours, ck on linkup with  Summertours website guys, collusion possible? - find them and ask!
Reply to tour person who emailed me....I usually eschew the ghost tour people...hmmm...
DIcn - Keep on with RR, get back to booklet chapter along with that - Same
Do separate thing on RR alone?
      Ditto KDnc mat's?
Sns/LtDnc - Write SAS once more, correct chapel name, get pix, forward to editor, and write my section/article. - Same
Promised short Fr. article inclusion needs more info, N/A to emails: call?
Nope: he still wants to play with the big boys; I can only do damage control, but I'm NOT doing all the work we'd have done
if they'd gotten back to us 6 mo. ago: It's too late for PR, we have other priorities, he's not well...it's really stupid!
SMag needs attention: next topic, get this one further along, etc.
   Website changes, ck on followup
CGs need to take off, how support further?
Do BStdy on Wshp/Arts - Started
Develop alt-inc options if NP goes south, as it could...DIN - Yep - see above.
Do Qbks entries, clean up further, run new reports, do new trial bal. (Tomorrow...) - Need to do another run, fix typos, cells
The laptop we have QBks on is about to die, I had to take out time to download on a different machine; backup opened OK.
Start next CC, Twts, Contact friendly colleague, get ideas (call/write again, he ghosted on me)

Overall:
  Apt. needs attention.
Money decisions to make - pay that big bill that just appeared! DIN (do it now)!
Two friends moving, need more help; one actively moving now, one more drive might do it. - Did all I can, the rest is up to her.

Well, a few more things crossed off. More to go. C'est la vie!

Finish tinkering with R&R and have a final go to make sure I don't have silly errors
Write a letter explaining how the reviews fail to understand my genius (I mean, humbly articulate how I have I have done every single thing the reviewers have asked me to do)
Finish podcasts for my online class (Monday)
Go to service meeting on campus (Monday)

Do annoying family admin
toddler B-day party for friend

New:
Exam writing and grading for online course

Long-term:
Start putting together everything for pre-tenure review

The family admin got pushed to later in the week, maybe tomorrow?

Good luck with the "dreaded track-changes", Polly!

We are now in the last land of our holiday. Much relaxing, sleeping, eating, and so forth. Also, went to see a doctor about a minor problem and now on more meds. Ugh. But at least I don't have to worry that it'll blow into something major on the trip home.

The new med is just making me stupid and sleepy. Well, perhaps MORE stupid and MORE sleepy.

Dept Head has informed me that (due to circumstances beyond our department's control) I now need to teach another course in Fall semester (i.e. starting a month from now). I have not taught this course online before and only once in a traditional classroom. Now I will teach it online to graduate students (not done that before either) using our CMS for the last semester this CMS will be used, and I will be teaching an extra course for no pay. Yes, I am cranky. At least it's online and not live. But still.

Today I really must:
Email students a general reminder, grade some stuff, do some PT, read a little, write postcards, sew on the thing,  write down all the scheduled conference calls for the coming week, reschedule Rhonda, more our stuff from the oldest child's room to the office room (where we sleep) since the extra overnight visitors are now gone, sit outside in the lovely weather, start thinking through new course design.

Online can be worse because it's harder to let a great discussion or planned activity take up a little extra time this week so that next week's topic is really ready.

Good luck!

Today's list for me

Yup. Our masters program is all online so I'm used to it but this course is new to me and I have to work out how to get them discussing well because I think it really matters in this particular course.

Thanks.

I will be teaching an extra course for no pay.

So, the following semester you will have a course reduction to compensate for this overload with no pay?  Otherwise, I don't get it.

I will be department head by then. My DH course reduction has been eaten by this course which our masters students need because the department that was supposed to teach another course cannot. Damned if I do, damned if I don't, but at least long term this course will now exist and be mine.

In theory I could teach NO courses in Spring but then, there's a course that is only in Spring and I'm the only person who teaches it...

Another day of perfect weather. I do not miss home at the moment.

Today I really must:
Email students a general reminder, grade some stuff, ride the bike to the grocery store, do some PT, read a little, write postcards, sew on the thing,  reschedule Rhonda, unpack all the stuff and organize it so we can live for the next two weeks or so without chaos, sit outside in the lovely weather, start thinking through new course design.

Whoa, Octo! That's pretty mean! Not fair, ill-considered....I could think of a lot of other words (and I bet you can and have already...)

Puget, yea for the house sale! Even with all the nonsense details, it is sooooo much of a relief to have it off your list (we sold our family house last year and oh, my, the level of detail (and my younger brother, who has an RE license in the state it was located in, was point person...but still....)

There are still two plots of desert soil in New Mexico that will go for taxes at some point, but we don't know when. And we signed over two others near Buckeye Lake in OH that were not properly conveyed to our dad in 1969 from our grandfather...and going back through all the books, we could see how they'd bought the parcel (there were 8 sub-plots, I think) from a county-wide fire sale in the 1940s....that had resulted from similar issues earlier in the 1900s.

I think I have discovered a new unknown (but surely not unnatural) love for early deed books (I've worked in book #2 of the MA archives...1640s)...maybe it goes with my already-deeply entrenched addiction to 13th c. manuscripts.

Anyway...I think l stay away from this listing stuff as long as I'm getting stuff done, then when I hit a snag or get becalmed, I come back.

So: Today:

Church
Lunch at wifi cafe
Plan December trip (UK/Fr/BE)
   1. Towns to visit each day
   2. Libraries, hours and closings at the end of December (some only close 12/25 and 1/1, others, both weeks...sort 'em out!!)
   3. Lodgings - Half worked out, more to do
   4. Friends to visit (some are also lodgings...)
   5. Travel options (which help straighten out quandries, some trips work better in one dir. than the other) - more to book.

Sent passel of previous writings to a friend who will look at them and tell em if there's a book in them or not (maybe?)

Yet to do, tonight or all day tomorrow (no students on Mondays at the moment, yea!)
A. BGdBk: 10 more gravestones; start thinking how to organize the 17th c. chapter (which will go for all the chapters, so...hmmm...).
B. Editing for a friend's much-delayed book first section (paid): two first segments done; 10 more mini-segments in this section)
C. Apt. needs attention. Maybe 1/4 of one room? (Bargaining with the cleaning and clearing genies)
D. Mvt wm-ups,
E. Prep food for the week
F. Review NP job needs, figure out what can and what can't be done by me, or others, or anyone
G. Plan students' new music needs (good that they're getting through their pieces but then I have to figure out what to give them next!)
H. Prep tours for Sat, try to get more PR out earlier, including Tweets and talk with PR agent who wants to work with me...hmmm...)
I. Remember that long list back a few pages? Find, re-evaluate, and think more long term with it in mind. Do It Now (DIN). Hmmmm..

Lots of hmmmmsss.....

Hmmmm....

You're welcome, Puget!

All good thoughts to others!

Not going to copy and cross-off yet, but today's needs are mired in a mini-depression, I think, over the discovery that the editing I started doing the other day unearthed some serious plagiarism, and I'm going to have to confront the writer with it. (I went to check a footnote, and realized I'd found the "pony" for the text-that-seemed-off-in-voice-for-this-writer...grrr). Infuriating....discouraging...yucky....grr...

When I'm angry, I can turn it inward on myself until it puts me in a kind of lassitude-like depression...and I have stuff to do today that can't wait around for me to get out of the dumps about this.

So...
1. Go set up PR for tomorrow's tours
2. Home, prep and clean necessary items,
3. Make dinner.
4. Check out of the 21st c. until tomorrow at 7 PM.
5. Do three more gravestone studies
6. Early to bed, and to rise... erc.
7. Scintillating, enjoyable, brilliant tours based on my own research, given in my own words[]/i..a-hem...
8. Decide if lugging an instrument to a jam session across town would be fun, or onerous--depends on tour demands...and would break my my "no more than two different centuries in a given day" rule for historical sanity...
9. Start new bodice, now that the lovely new fabric has arrived...soft all-cotton jacobean print...yummm...
10. Decide and do on all the other listed stuff after church on Sunday.

  • Visit to financial planner to continue wrapping up the lawyer documents
  • Progress on the project I haven't even mentioned here that needs to be wrapped up soon
  • Personal library work unpacking and cataloging

I have only about 100 index cards left and zero boxes at the house (still several dozen boxes 3 hours away that we'll retrieve slowly).

How's it going, Puget, mamselle, nucleo, and Polly?

I started a new job with lots of new tasks and ill defined policies and procedures so I've been drowning for the past six weeks or so. Why do these positions have no manual or instructions or something? It's so exhausting to figure out every new thing anew every day. I feel so stupid.

This too shall pass, no?

I worked as an EA for an office where all the policy notebooks had to built from the ground up.

It was sort-of interesting in the sense that we built something useful for the institute, but then the overseeing group decided to change all their programs, and the person I was supporting left (they basically did him out of a job) so I don't know what happened after that.

Institutional memory vacillates between amnesia and Altzheimers', I sometimes think.

Good luck!

And--here's a life raft to help out with not drowning...hmm....well....sort of. (Where's conjugate when you need a type-figure-drawer?)

This. And other people in the same job across the university just say useful stuff like "Wing it!" and "You'll figure it out!" HELLO? You have been doing the parallel job for 10 years, perhaps you might have some knowledge to share? No? Can't be bothered? Well, thanks.

Thanks for asking.

It's good to see you here.

I'm going into chapel now, then have six setups for an upcoming board meeting to put into place.

Then...editing the newsletter one last time before it goes to the printer, and run a brief 25-piece mail merge and print it.

Then...if it stops raining, going to the town next door to start plotting the tour I will be discussing Friday and giving the 19th. (If it's raining, stay in the library and plan my paper for 11/2 in OH and the related research in EU...and the UK, if there still is one, in December.)

Tonight, monastery service at 5.30, then the local library to finish a study I can only do there (local history sources)

Tomorrow, my usual students are off (Yom Kippur) so I'll do either one of the things I couldn't do above, then go to check out options for a Wild Pizza Search the first night of the upcoming conference, and the Dessert Scavenger Hunt the last night. (Area has many of both....it's important to get them right...)

I will have to sample the goods, of course....am bringing a friend to help.

Teaching, meetings, and more tour prep on Thursday and Friday...have to print handouts.

And then home.

You?

It's good to see you here.

I'm going into chapel now, then have six  five four three setups for an upcoming board meeting to put into place.

Then...editing the newsletter one last time before it goes to the printer, can't do this 'til Thursday, we don't have all the page proofs back yet...
... and run a brief 25-piece mail merge and print it. - may do this next

Then...if it stops raining, - [no such luck]

going to the town next door to start plotting the tour I will be discussing Friday and giving the 19th. {This will be done tomorrow, in concert with a pizza and dessert crawl across the bridge from the burying ground...a very well-balanced manner of thing, I think...}

If it's raining, stay in the library and plan my paper for 11/2 in OH and the related research in EU...and the UK, if there still is one, in December. - 15 min. to do this now, more later

I will have to sample the goods, of course....am bringing a friend to help. - Definitely the plan now. In fact, a pre-quel to a wilder, more populated search with a couple more folks in a week or so as well.

Teaching, meetings, and more tour prep on Thursday and Friday...have to print handouts.

And then home.

Arrgh...I'm grumpy in three different directions now....
A. It's supposed to rain tomorrow through Sat., and the tour prep and food finding both need decent weather to be any good, or any fun.  I may try to do the tour prep in the AM anyway, see how far I can get with it, but...

B. The food-finding fun will cut out a meeting in which I was to pick up a check (and thus pay a bill.) However, that meeting has now been moved to Thursday--only a day different, but it's a case of realizing you may regret getting what you thought you wanted!!!

C. I'm on track with a few things, but there are two more that need some time and didn't get it today. Solution? Follow "Scarlet's Dictum"? Stay up late and finish one (maybe a bit). Swap the other for the can't-go-outside afternoon food escapade?

Hmmmm...

Hello, octo, nucleo, others!

I'm less grumpy: the rain mostly held off, I figured out the tour, had time to do more prep (looking for probated wills online; even found some!) and I have a better start on the suudenly-we-want-to-meet-on-Froday handout.

I'm only grumpy in one direction now....someone's not listening but the consequences for that will have to come later...to them, not me...

Well...two...the article that didn't go in is now in the article orphans' home...will expand a bit and try again.

A. It's supposed to rain tomorrow through Sat., and the tour prep and food finding both need decent weather to be any good, or any fun.  I may try to do the tour prep in the AM anyway, see how far I can get with it, but...

No biggie. I survived and friend was fine with re-booking.

[/s]B. The food-finding fun will cut out a meeting in which I was to pick up a check (and thus pay a bill.) However, that meeting has now been moved to Thursday--only a day different, but it's a case of realizing you may regret getting what you thought you wanted!!![/s]

No issues. Swap made. Why was I so upset?!!

C. I'm on track with a few things, but there are two more that need some time and didn't get it today. Solution? Follow "Scarlet's Dictum"? Stay up late and finish one (maybe a bit). Swap the other for the can't-go-outside afternoon food escapade?

I will have to sample the goods, of course....am bringing a friend to help. - Definitely the plan now. In fact, a pre-quel to a wilder, more populated search with a couple more folks in a week or so as well.

Teaching, meetings, and more tour prep on Thursday and Friday...have to print handouts.

OK, things are better!

Good day to all who are out and about!

Today:
Leave soon
Get packet folders for and mtg
  Put some stuff in them,
  Prep other stuff later
  Lunch with a friend
  Teach Music students
Library, maybe...more work on 17th c. stone probated
Write blog summary to send instead of now-orphaned article, so as to not burn bridges
Home
Prep for mtg tomorrow, and teaching
Recline and rest...

I've got to get back to the longer list, there's still stuff on it to be done. But this will do for now!

Today's quick-check, more needed later.

Sat. paper went well. Yea!

In the OSU music and dance library now, with 50 books to scan/copy in the next 3 hours, before going to lunch with a friend (might come back afterwards if I don't get done.)

Wish I could transplant this library to where I live, it's richer and more transparent in some of the materials I need. There are a couple near me that come close, but are surprisingly thin on ethnic dance materials and historic muisc, in some cases.

So:

1. Scan stuff put aside for the continuation of the paper given on Sat. that I couldn't get to before the presentation (two more versions to be given in the next 6 months...)

2. Scan cool stuff that turned up for the dance iconography booklet, esp. the chapter on East Asian dance (the department has consistently brought in dancers-in-residence from a variety of dance dialects since I was here in the 1970s...very grateful for that).

3. Scan and copy other random cool stuff that has shown up as I've been browsing the stacks.

4. Make notes for works in progress from these materials.

5. Start typing them in.

Two new observations have also come to mind:

   1. Libraries are dangerous places.

This is where the revolution begins.

   2. If you don't know what to write, you're not reading enough.

Read until you have to write.

I'm giving myself 1.5 hours to do the copying/scanning--starting now.

M's - 6 bks

ML's - 7 bks

GV's - 20 bks

Go!

M's - 6 bks 5 to go

Clearly I was a bit too optimistic.

On the other hand, it turns out I have several more hours tomorrow since I mis-judged my flight time (it's later than I thought) so all may be well.

Ongoing...

Finally finished them all, just stopped posting.

Still have to save them all in their separate files (about 50 done so far).

Today: a 7-hour plan to be fulfilled:

1) 2-hrs: 13th c. Ppt work

2) 2 hrs: travel planning

3) 1-hr: 17th c. chapter draft text smidgen

4) 2-hrs: meeting minutes

A good conversation with a member of the audience at a presentation last night clarified a choice that has been holding up #2. Working on #1 will help clarify further choices in #2.

I'd rather start with #3, but timing for calls on #2 suggests it can go later.

I'd rather not have to do #4 at all, but until I figure out an alternative, that's a necessity.

OK, ready, set--going after books for #1 now.

Today: a 7-hour plan to be fulfilled:

1) 2-hrs: 13th c. Ppt work

2) 2 hrs: travel planning Took more like 3 hours, with some weird stuff to deal with: why does the last train to Lille leave one minute before the last Chunnel gets into Calais? Imponderables like, why, if I tried to book the 15th in my hostel did it show up for the 19th? Etc.

Anyway, the first week is just about done. And I've confirmed with my cousin. And I may have to give up the Chunnel ticket I thought I'd so wisely booked in advance because of the nonsense noted above, and re-book to Lille instead (if only I'd known...).

La vie, c'est comme ca...

Oh here it is!

Not much more progress after Barre class.
==========================

Octoprof taught me the Pomodoro method.  You set a timer. Work for 25 minutes, break for 5 minutes, and continue on/off until done.

If I don't know where to start, I look at the clock. The last number tells me which item to do for 25 minutes. So at 10:21 I would work on taxes and keep doing that until whenever.

But first, breakfast and shower.

Thanks for re-starting this!

OK, six costumes to make; I won't list all the pieces, but...

chemises: 1 nearly done, 2 started, 3 to make (but may have a couple already, have to look for them.
tunics: 3 to make
breeches/slops: 3 to make, probably
overdresses: three to make
shoes: might have, or have to make
tights: probably have to buy some, not all
headgear: have two already, may have to make four more
jewelry: two nearly done, two on hand, two more to make

Productive buying and sewing day today, very encouraging!

More work of a less-fun nature:
Transcribe minutes: started
Finish blog: 1-2 more sessions should do it
work on other blog/article: hmmm...
Ppt no. 1 for talk no. 1: started
Ppt no. w for talk no. 2: hmmmmm...

Teaching as usual
NP stuff as usual, with a dash of nonsense added.
Apt/etc. : hmmmm.....
other stuff....hmmm....

M......mmmm......
