Title: Hooray For ME! (Announce your victories both large and small here!)
Post by: clean on June 02, 2020, 03:46:49 PM
A thread to express your victories!

Thursday the back wheel fell off of my lawnmower after only one pass in the back yard.  I ordered parts on Friday. They arrived today and I replaced the back wheel All By Myself!  In less than an hour!!

My coworker and another good friend noted that I paid $96 in replacement parts for a nearly 20 year old mower, and that I could have purchased a new mower for 'just a few hundred more'!

But I figure that my nearly 20 year old mower, That I FIXED All By Myself!  is still in great shape and will last for many years to come and the way I figure it, I SAVED a few hundred by fixing it myself!  And i got the satisfaction of doing it myself (and saving some cash)

So what victories, large and small do you want to announce to the fora?

Wow!  I couldn't fix a lawn mower.  I still remember my dad completely dismantling and ruining our lawnmower when I was a kid.  It was kind of hilarious.  Parts all over the driveway.

I cleaned the back porch windows of deep green smootch without an active spigot.  So much nicer.

And I can play the entire first movement of the great 19th century concerto I've been working on, not entirely well yet, but getting there.

And 3 manuscripts out there door; let's hope the editors are in a good mood.

Cheers!

My electric kettle was rattling, so I unscrewed the base, found a loose screw and a slot where it seemed to fit (there was a partner slot where a similar screw was still in place), and screwed it in. Now the kettle doesn't rattle anymore. I feel like the monarch of handypeople.

I've been assembling things as well, most recently a cabinet from Home Depot which had lots of parts and instructions even less informative than Ikea if such a thing is possible. There were some moments of despair but it all came together in the end.

I really like concrete hands on projects as a break from academic work.

Yay!  I like this thread.

I've lost 28 lbs since January and my partner has lost just over 30 lbs.  We have done it by eating a whole-foods plant based diet and eating only at home (no take-out or restaurants).  My goal is to lose 43 lbs more and, at this pace, should get there in January of next year.  It's been a pretty easy process so far and has not required a regular work-out routine either.

The bad thing about weight loss is that I will need to buy new clothes and sadly faced with donating clothes that I liked very much and still have some life left.  Many of my clothes are not valuable enough to have tailored, so I'll have to look for new garments.  Despite that, having less fat on my body is helpful in so many ways that it totally offsets the disappointment of losing my clothes.  We went for a bike ride a couple of weeks ago and it was astonishing how much easier it was to ride with 20 lbs less weight being carried around.  Sleep is better and life is generally so much more comfortable... especially as the summer weather heats up.

If anyone is looking for weight loss inspiration along these lines, I recommend the movie "Eating You Alive" (2018) that is available on TubiTV for free to watch here: https://tubitv.com/movies/475193/eating_you_alive?start=true (https://tubitv.com/movies/475193/eating_you_alive?start=true)  The book "Eat to Live" by Joel Fuhrman is also a great resource.

Apparently my students last semester nominated me for a teaching award. I didn't get it, but it's awfully kind of them to have done so.

Did a touch up paint job on my car--it had some minor scrapping.  Since my car has a unique green color, I bought a paint pen online from a car paint speciality company.

What did you use? I've been debating adding some temporary color to my hair, but am overwhelmed with hair mascara and hair chalk and hair spray. Too many options!

I bought professional dye (wella koleston) and developer.
Pro dyes are good because you can adjust the strength yourself.  Also if you only need a small amount (dying a small patch lie this) it works out cheaper as they are in resealable containers and last a while (home box dyes are all single use).

I'm fair haired so I used a blonde dye with a 20vol developer. If there is a Sallys beauty supply near you they carry the major pro lines.  I've used Wella before but they are all similar.

I unclogged a shower using a small snake that I had never used successfully before.  Was relieved that I didn't have to call a plumber or go to Lowes to buy some nasty chemical to pour down the drain.

That's actually quite an amazing accomplishment.

It's not really a victory on my part, but my university has decided to postpone assessment and reporting deadlines normally scheduled for this year, to next year.

Congratulations to everyone on your accomplishments!

I recently learned that I won a very large grant, more than half a million dollars. It's been hard to celebrate given ... all of this (said while gesturing at basically everything happening right now). But, I had been discussing a potential position in my lab with someone, and I got to e-mail her and let her know that the job was hers since the grant had come through. It was very joyful to be able to offer someone a position in the middle of a pandemic and a terrible economy.

My lab also submitted two R&Rs this week. The revisions for both were fairly straightforward. It feels good to have those papers off my desk, and I am optimistic about their chances of acceptance.

Thank you! I hadn't thought about professional dyes being less expensive in the long run. If I decide to go beyond temporary spot of color, that's good to know.

I seem to have successfully transferred the economic stimulus payment my wife and I received in the form of a stupid debit card to my checking account. My wife's last name on the card was wrong (it was my name). The two banks we use both said "Oh, we can't cash this out and put the money in your account for you." There is one in-network ATM nearby; we'd have to make multiple trips there, only one trip per day, to get the money off the card. My sister-in-law got her stimulus payment in the form of a paper check, which she took to her bank and deposited.

Which one of Trump's cronies owns the company that supplied the debit cards?

Jobs! Grants! Fixed lawn mowers! Yay to all! (I'm envious of you handy people.)

My exciting news is that today I got an advance book contract. I'm wary of sharing in other places because things are tough for so many people. But I'm very glad to share with you.

Also, I've now heard from two students in the last class I taught, which I've taught many times but this time rebuilt from the ground up, that they were inspired by the material. Every teacher loves to hear that.

This may seem small, but it's a big deal in a way.

The ADHD student for whom I do homework mentoring has progressed from having me scribe for him to taking notes for himself. (I sort of tricked him into it today, but he stuck with it for nearly 40 minutes before asking if I were taking notes as well.)

We also managed to work through his fear of thunder (small storm passing through): he went to the basement, put a blanket over his head, and pulled the blanket over the laptop so we could see each other and continue working.

And we have made a lot of progress in how he does his work; he's gone from procrastinating on each step until I help with it, to following through and getting parts of his work done in advance.

I have to prompt him a lot (that was my learning curve; his condition includes a kind of instantaneous "forgetting" that things exist, so that, for example, he can't walk to school alone because he'd wander out into the street without remembering about cars...so my texts to him include reminders about what step of the work we're on and when I would like to see it) which I usually don't do, because I want to encourage independent work.

But by backing up and meeting him where he is (which is further back, developmentally, than the music work we also do together) we've started to move forward towards that goal as well.

I'm bemused and pleased by what seems like a growing experience for both of us....and grateful.

What a great collection of victories!

Mine is a bittersweet one.
Mid-April, I learned that one of my favorite high school teachers passed of Covid-19. She was 93. Back last fall, I learned that the department where she got her master's degree before she started teaching is the very same department where I worked from 1997-2004. So I wrote her a note last fall to close that loop, and tell her how much she inspired me.

In today's mail I received a handwritten note from her daughter. She said that her mother had kept my letter in her desk drawer. So it meant a lot to her. I am so very glad that I sent that to her. Her daughter says she comes and visits my city every year, and she hopes we can hang for a coffee or a beer on her next visit.

Oh, and we cleaned the garage!!

So glad you got to connect with her and that she received it as it was meant. I got to thank a couple of my significant HS instructors, but missed reaching a couple of others before they died, and I've always been a little sad I didn't get to tell them how much their work had meant to me.

And, yea! for the garage...that's no small victory at all!

Monarda, what a sweet story. I'm glad her daughter wrote to you, and that you sent your original note.

My lab had a paper accepted! A paper that represented a new research direction for us and was a difficult set of data to collect. We also had a paper rejected, and I'm grateful for the glut of acceptances that made that rejection feel small.

This is on the level of "hilarious but I didn't do what I'm being commended for" references.

As anyone on Academia may know, there is a feedback on citations that will list your references in others' documents.

I have about a dozen real ones on my work in the humanities/history/arts/etc.

But there's someone with my name, or close to it, and same first initial, who does work on the presence of testosterone in female salivary samples...and I'm constantly having to decline those as part of my citations list!

Clearly, I went into the wrong field...

Has it really been exactly a year since anyone has had a victory to celebrate???

Well, I'm celebrating.

I had to combine a younger (8-going-on 90) student's intro theory work with an older class because of schedule changes (his).

I had a feeling they could work well together, but kept reminding myself it might blow up in my face.

Ha!!

The 8-year-old nailed it, and it looks like he's going to be keeping the others on their toes.

Tee-hee.....so happy when a hunch pays off.

Ha!!

Yay for the wise youngster, the older class, and you, Mamselle for helping people grow and learn! : )
Nice, indeed, to read good news after a year lag on this thread.

Yes, good news thread! Bravo for reviving it.

My department has confirmed that they'll provide the $1000 for color printing charges of my big article. They've also agreed to buy 10 (TEN!) pieces of lab equipment that I've been requesting just two units of on equipment bids over the last three years, and a year-long subscription to an online service that we thought would be useful. They are clearly rolling in the cash they saved this year with no travel expenses!

Wow, the photo subventions alone are impressive.

Enjoy the new equipment, too!

Congratulations to both of you, mamselle and ergative!

My victory is that I've resumed being able to write something substantial for the first time since things started going wrong for me two and a half years ago.  Now on my third chapter, and my mind is humming.  It feels so good to have that ability restored.

Whoo--hooooo!!!

Yes, there's a...."writing cave," or a "writing tunnel," or some kind of writing space that we seem to move in and out of.

For the past three weeks I've been looking for the entrance to whatever that structure is that allows for the writing of pieces not necessarily "expected" by others for conferences, presentations, etc.

I might have just happened on it this week in the underbrush, I guess I got away from it for a bit and it got covered in gorse-bushes!

Thanks, all.  I never expected to get back into my profession, so it is a real boost.

Adding my congratulations--great news, WarEagle!  ETA:  sorry it's a year late--I didn't even notice I was so far behind! I hope the new job is going well!

From here:  Daughter #2 and I did most of the work to replace the window AC in her room on this hot, hot day (with calling on ALHS only for the lifting to remove the old and install the new).

I decided I should claim a refund for a plane ticket I bought ages ago, which was cancelled due to the pandemic, converted to a voucher, and can now be converted to a full refund (thanks to the federal government). Turns out I was 1.5 hours away from the deadline. Woohoo!

Nicely done! Somehow it's more satisfying to accomplish a task if there was a chance you were going to miss the deadline and then you didn't.

After reviving my Academia alerts, which somehow got turned off at some point, I've had requests for input on three topics related to my work.

To one I turfed the review request over to other more specialized researchers; to one I sent (I hope) useful materials, and to one really egregious abstract, I gave a very clear refusal.

Sounds silly, but being asked for ones (informed) opinion is nice, sometimes...

Double-posting, albeit a few hours apart, sorry....!

My friend/colleague/client said very nice things about the color and layout on the Ppt slides I formatted for them.

AND he requested an invoice, and has another small job upcoming.

Win-win-win.

More immediately satisfying, I finally figured out how to get DVDs to play in full widescreen with my new TV.

I started my first teaching position last fall and it has been a rough ride. During that time, I felt very overwhelmed but still worked on writing an article. I submitted it and it will be published this fall. They did ask for a couple revisions to be made but I just finished those revisions and sent it in this morning.

I'm very proud of the paper, especially as I wrote it with no support from my community college, during my first year teaching, and during a pandemic.

About 12,000 words written on my draft this week.  If I can keep this up, I should have a first draft knocked out in just a few more weeks.  Then I can get started on the second draft--the one I can actually start showing people.

Congrats! Writing a paper in the last year was very difficult. I'll be honest. I only have one paper published so far in 2021, but it was a paper that I started before the pandemic.

Hoooray for all the productive writing people have been doing.

I have successfully scrubbed the bathroom today. Not just the bare minimum to keep mold from developing. I took a toothbrush to the grout and everything.

It was Approved!

We are adding my major to our college's online offerings.  (IT is designed so that we can capture those CC graduates that are too far or too busy to attend an upper division university).  The process of adding the classes is that we have to design and develop the classes and then get the content approved by the chair and the Online Education folks who have no idea about substance, but check you for ADA compliance, and a plethora of other crap!

You class can be 'failed' for things like not having your syllabus compliant... like having words underlined, because underlining is reserved for links ONLY.  So the annoying issues are that the college required format for the syllabus content includes things like underlined content!  (So one admin critter sends us boiler plate we must include and another says 'fix it'!).

Anyway, I dealt with them a few  years ago and it was a huge SUCK of Time!!

BUT I PASSED!  My recent submission was accepted without any required modifications!!

(unfortunately, the paper we submitted to a journal last month, was outright rejected!)

Just received word from our retirement system that I am now vested. And in the summer "engaging students online" course I took, my discussion grade got bumped up from 86 to 100.

Those are victories that might not be picked up by the most powerful microscopes, but yeah, I'm throwing myself a big party in my head.

I entered a speculative fiction limerick contest last month and won $5!

(I also forgot to check back in until just now, and so possibly it's too late to claim my prize--but still! The honor! The glory! BOW BEFORE ME, MORTALS!)

Here is my winning entry:

A lowda who hailed from the Belt
had grown, in low-G, tall and svelte
She did not visit Mars,
preferring the stars,
And Earth's gravity just made her melt.

Here's two in one: my doctoral advisor won a major career award and one of my former students (and their co-authors) won a major "best article" award in a top journal in my field. I couldn't be happier for them all. This comes a year after I won a book award, so it's been a good year for my little circle.

Several months ago (but (probably) not more than a year) I lost a button from the left cuff of my favorite soft warm flannel shirt. I stuck the button on the bookshelf that is conveniently next to the arm of the couch and serves as a sort of coffee ledge. It has languished there for several months now (but probably not more than a year), until today, when the fates aligned, I pulled out my dusty sewing kit, found the button which had waited faithfully for me all this time, and sewed that sucker back on the cuff.

Way to go, ergative!

I have a small tin where I throw all buttons, both the extra ones that come with new clothing and the ones that fell off my clothes.  This summer I lost some weight and needed smaller shorts.  I found and sewed on all the missing buttons from the shorts I hadn't been wearing because 1) they were too small and 2) they were missing buttons.  Suddenly I had clothes again!  It was a good feeling.
