Research & Scholarship / Re: April Research Thread
Last post by darkstarrynight - Today at 01:33:09 PM
I finally started writing the chapter that is due May 31. I nudged my coauthor that I got started and an outline was in the draft so they can get started too. It is a little easier to write this (since we are both experts in the chapter topic) compared to the book manuscript (a topic I enjoy but feel imposter-y about). Onward...

I hate IRS and state taxes. Today is worst day of the year.
I suspect millionaires pay less than I do. Maybe billionaires

Quote from: marshwiggle on Today at 12:39:50 PMOntario university seeks math professor who self-IDs as woman or gender minority

QuoteAside from being an "exceptional scholar and researcher," the tenure track position, ranked as an assistant professor, is looking for candidates with a PhD or equivalent in pure mathematics or a related discipline.

"To address legal requirements for supporting underrepresented groups in the CRC program, eligible candidates for this search are required to identify as a woman or gender minority, which is defined to include individuals who self-identify as women, transgender, gender-fluid, nonbinary and Two-Spirit people."

The discussion of DEI, and here Canadian CDC, reminds me of a line in the movie Miss Congeniality [2000] where Sandra Bullock and Candice Bergen argue over whether the Pageant at the heart of the movie is a Beauty Pageant or a Scholarship Program. Is DEI a Reeducation Program or a Jobs Program? Outside a few States, it's a jobs program and, as such, can't fail!

But boring in an agreeable and interesting sort of way.  Not the bad kind of boring.

I think we're lumping together a lot of similar, but not necessarily directly related, concepts.

So, apparently she claims that she meant the sun, not the moon.  I tend to believe she isn't quite as stupid as the discussion thus far treats her.  Mixing up "sun" and "moon" is akin to the many misspeaks we've heard from Biden and Trump.  Perhaps the real story should be how ignorant our entire political system is - that I could go along with.  But I think this focus on Sheila Jackson Lee's comments are cheap shots. People say things that are wrong and walk back all the time - why is nobody addressing her response to the ridicule?

Quote from: ab_grp on Today at 07:49:05 AMWe're waiting excitedly (/sarcasm) to see if our CPA filed an extension and intends to complete our taxes or if I'm going to have to do so.  They were a great little local business but got bought out last year by a national group, and we have had zero correspondence from them! For others who use a CPA (especially part of a firm), I would be interested to know if you get any kind of updates that they have received your files, they plan to prepare your tax returns, the returns are ready for review, or an extension is being filed, or...?

Same thing happened to me.  Every year, worse service at a higher cost.  Last year they put me so far down their priority list I needed an extension - that never happened with the mom & pop firm I used to use.  Now, they just mail me a large envelope with a checklist, tell me "put your crap in here" and I drop it off at their office and hope they do something with it.

I downloaded Turbo Tax this year, did it myself for 1/3 the cost and basically the same outcome as the CPA firm used to get me with respect to return being accepted and refund/tax owing calculated.

Got folks who waited until the last minute to get their tax materials copied, printed, or both here at the library. Argh!
