Summer is winding down and so I hope we can all take some time for ourselves before the fall semester begins... But we also know that the show must go on. So amid your summer ales, BBQs, and naps on the beach, what are your goals for the month?
My August goals:
- Make progress on book project #1 - continue conducting interviews and writing, continue working with editor to get the proposal to where she wants it
- Make progress on book project #2 w colleague - ball is in colleague's court
- Make progress on article manuscript #1 w colleague - we need a full draft by the end of the month for a conference, ball is currently in colleague's court
- Make progress on article manuscript #2 w colleague - ball is in colleague's court
Oh whoops, it's August now!
- Revise invited chapter.
- Finish reading book for October panel.
- Finish and publish Newsletter.
- Comment on a thing for a friend.
I'll be away and mostly unable to work from the 9-20, so that's enough. But if I get lucky, I can stretch to:
- Revise an article, send it out again.
- Finish this translation
- Write book review
- Write up an intro and check the Latin in translation project 2
August goals:
Finish the draft of chapter 1
Start chapter 2
Write and submit book review
Have conference paper ready to submit
Did my Newslettering, read twice my quota and half my friend's piece.
Today, I should newsletter and maybe start revising that chapter. Maybe even translate a bit.
618 words today. Taking the rest of the day off.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 02, 2023, 07:43:25 AMToday, I should newsletter and maybe start revising that chapter. Maybe even translate a bit.
Managed a bit of all three.
I mostly need to prepare and maybe record some lectures today. But I'll also aim to get a chunk of reading done. I got a referee request this morning, too, so I'll have a glance at that.

Did those things.
The main thing today is to record my lectures. Alas. Might get a tiny bit of translating in.
631 words today. I took yesterday off because of a meeting far, far away from home. I'll make it up tomorrow.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 04, 2023, 09:51:17 AMThe main thing today is to record my lectures. Alas. Might get a tiny bit of translating in.
Did that and a Newsletter chunk, but my co-editor promptly did other things that overwrote my work, so now I have to redo it all. Sigh. It's best to stick to the system!
Reading my chunk today. I also need to read for my chapter revision.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 05, 2023, 09:57:25 AMReading my chunk today. I also need to read for my chapter revision.
Did those. Just.
Need to make some writing progress on those revisions today.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 06, 2023, 08:44:42 AMNeed to make some writing progress on those revisions today.
Managed a tiny bit, but really not enough to be satisfying.
316 words today. Short go of it because I think the first draft is in a good stopping place. Now to review it and see if I still agree with this tomorrow.
Getting everything ready to move and start the new job for the rest of the week. Might be done writing for the week.
I'd like to work on the revision, but I'm not sure I'll have the time to do so. If not, I'll definitely have a chance to finish reading for my referee report, and to read either for the revision or for the book symposium thing.

Finished Newslettering, read my quota, read for the revision, read a third for my referee report.
Travelling, so nothing today.
Sent first chapter over to some friends to see if it something beyond incomprehensible dribble.
I won't be back writing until 8/21. Moving tomorrow and orientation and set up stuff for the new job will dominate next week I expect.
Here begin many days of basically no progress on anything. It's necessary, but will be frustrating.
The editing of the last chapter of the book is nearing the end. I hope that the manuscript will go to the press next week.
Yesterday I sent an article to a journal. I hope to have a clean desk in September.
A full day of moving, followed by some late-night marking. I did, however, decline some invitations.
I did a spot of marking, and a small chunk of referee report-reading. I should be able to generate the report tomorrow.
Finished the report.

Had a paper rejected last week, so adding it to the list.
My R&R was rejected again today--by what was clearly a different set of referees who wanted something closer to the original paper. Grr. It's especially frustrating because this is actually a good paper. It's somewhat polemical, sure, but it engages so carefully with so much of the literature, yet the booster claim there's some unspecified better version I've ignored so that I can cherrypick my dozens of sources. Really? Maybe the view under discussion just is that bad. It's something for which we have a mountain of empirical evidence going back sixty years indicating it's false, after all (and yet they think there's no such evidence... With that, I can't even.).
Received the PhD thesis I'm examining today. Gonna manage a spot of grading, and maybe a glance at that.

I did indeed manage that! I only have essays left to mark.

Revise and submit rejected manuscript (#3) to a new journal
I submitted paper #3 today. Hoping to get paper #2 out the door tomorrow or, more likely, on Friday.

Paper #2 is off to a journal
Not research, but I need to make a huge push today--have to get sixty-odd papers marked by four. Ugh.

Oof, done.
Back in the saddle. 520 words today.
I also found my classrooms.
Finally back to work today. Will translate a page or so and work on my revisions.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 22, 2023, 09:15:18 AMFinally back to work today. Will translate a page or so and work on my revisions.
Two pages and ~350 words. It's not much, but it's a start.
EDIT: I also went over the proofs for an article.
Bit of translating, but then it's a reading day. Would like to read my quota plus a goodly chunk of my friend's chapter.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 23, 2023, 06:42:19 AMBit of translating, but then it's a reading day. Would like to read my quota plus a goodly chunk of my friend's chapter.
Did that. Finished and sent back my friend's chapter.
Not likely to manage to do much today. Maybe a little translating.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 24, 2023, 09:49:36 AMNot likely to manage to do much today. Maybe a little translating.
Managed a few pages. Only twentyish to go, plus checking my co-translator's.
I'll translate a bit, then work on my revisions, then read my quota.
I haven't done a good job of posting it here, but I wrote each day this week. Hit 2,620 words on the week.
Maybe next week I'll have a computer in my office and can update daily. Maybe not.

Doubled my quota.
Probably just translating a few pages today.
Plans for today disrupted. Will get some translation done, not sure what else. Would like to still manage a little revising, but we'll see.

Did some of both.
Some translation and some revision today. Also reading my quota--maybe even finishing the book, if there's time.

Did lots--will finish the translation tomorrow, and finished the book and several chapters, plus did some solid revising.
Wrote about 500 words today. I also started the book review that's due shortly. Hopefully I'll finish that tomorrow.
I'll finish my half of the translation today.
I cannot believe I forgot to log on in August! I missed everyone. I just took a look at my July goals.
Update manuscript to submit to target journal #2
Write book chapters due August 1
Get started on book manuscript
Journal #2 moved my manuscript past desk review, which is such a relief!
Both book chapters have been submitted! My spouse was reluctant, but we got that submitted yesterday (the deadline was extended to August 31st from August 1st). I submitted my solo chapter the Monday prior.
I started on the book today with the preface.
Besides the above, I submitted a book chapter proposal with my colleague, and we will find out in September if we are invited to write the full chapter. I have been very busy with IRB and journal editor duties. The fellowship I had last Fall during my sabbatical finally has its report in proof form! I got to see it today, and it should be published in the next few weeks! I also should be getting a book chapter proof soon for a chapter I wrote early last year.
Besides this one new book chapter I hope to write with my colleague, my goal is focus my time on the book manuscript. The contract is to have it come out in late 2026, but I have decided to aim for a 2025 release instead for a few different reasons.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 29, 2023, 08:05:48 AMI'll finish my half of the translation today.
Done. Not only did I finish translating, I also went back and took care of my footnotes, uncertainties, etc., and added in paragraph breaks where necessary.
Touching up my fall syllabi and starting to read the PhD thesis I'm examining.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on August 30, 2023, 07:12:09 AMTouching up my fall syllabi and starting to read the PhD thesis I'm examining.
Read 28% of the thing.
Gonna get some revising done. Maybe also do some work on my translator's intro for that solo project.

I got most of the way on the chapter revisions; I'll finish those early in September. Did a little work on the translation intro, too. And IIRC I refereed a paper in there somewhere, and started reading the PhD thesis I'm examining.
Not a bad month, really, despite that 12-day hiatus.
