I think I've done it, though I'll sit on it for a few days to be sure.
I took a stab at the conference thing again, but it's proving remarkably resistant, and my energy is low.
Okay, well, no more excuses. Must make progress on the conference talk.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on October 02, 2023, 09:46:25 AMOkay, well, no more excuses. Must make progress on the conference talk.
I think I've found a way in. It won't be pretty, but whatever.
Just the conference paper today.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on October 03, 2023, 05:14:22 PMJust the conference paper today.
~900 words. I've found my way in, which allows me to rely heavily on some of the material from my solo translation's intro. So that's nice. And it looks like I've threaded it in sufficiently well that I'll be able to build on it over the next few days.
Phew! I was getting worried.
I'll do what I can to get some writing of the conference paper done, although I've been warned of a big disruption this morning. Sigh. I just can't seem to get a proper hands-free-typing day. It's been weeks.

Wrote 400, cannibalized 1100. I'm two-thirds of the way to a paper!
More work on the conference piece today.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on October 05, 2023, 08:09:55 AMMore work on the conference piece today.
Meh, didn't get much done, just ~400 semi-cannibalized words.
My perennially rejected paper was rejected again. Too bad, because it's pretty good. Sigh.
Today, I'd like to make progress on the conference piece and finish double checking the paper accepted with minor revisions.

Uuuuugh. The referee was very happy with it--but it got rejected because it was scooped. In fairness, the scooping happened years ago, shortly after I first sent a draft in to a journal. I thought I'd done a good job in the intervening years of showing how this builds on that, but I guess not. Oh well. Bugger it, I'll just re-send it as-is.
QuoteToday, I'd like to make progress on the conference piece and finish double checking the paper accepted with minor revisions.
I sent in the accepted paper. Didn't make much progress on the conference piece because it's cursed, and all of my hands-free time was hijacked. Only got ~500 words in. Which is okay, but I'd have liked to get it pretty much done before the weekend, when we will have guests. Especially since I have to send it in the 13th.
I'm not sure I'll have the time, but I'd like to do a bit on the conference piece.

Failed utterly. Oh well.
Don't imagine I'll have much time today, but if I do I'll work on the conference piece.

As expected, nada.
I suppose I'll hope to do something today, though again my prospects are dim.

~500 words, and finished checking my translation sample for later in the month.
Last day of guests. Probably nothing will get done, but if it does, it'll be the conference piece.

Managed a tiny bit, but it was otherwise annoying stuff. Also had a quick freelance job to do.

I've been making good progress on book project #1 this week and I am feeling pretty "in the zone" on it. If I could finish a full draft of the chapter I'm working on this month then I would consider that a significant victory.
I also put my RA on the book chapter, so hopefully I'll have a nice outline and some sources to begin working from soon.
I really need to deal with paper #1, as I'm sure my colleague is annoyed. I spent time on it last month, but got frustrated and left it alone, but I should get back to it now that I have had some time away.
Gonna try to get my conference piece more or less done, and then read a couple of things for my translator's intro.

I even got around to some garden maintenance.
I should go over the conference piece and then send it over. And then... something else.

Managed that, at least.
Once again, my time has been scuppered. Dunno what I'll manage to do today. At least a little reading, but it would be nice to get something else done, too.
Got a desk rejection today, too, for the cursed paper. Guess I'll figure out where to send it next.

Sent the paper back out, did a spot of reading.
I'll try to make some progress on the slideshow.

Only managed a tiny bit. Once again, I had no time at all.
More work on the presentation today.
Submitted an abstract to a meeting yesterday. Will know status in early December. Project had some issues - hopefully will past muster as an abstract at a local meeting, but I'm not confident it would get through peer review at any reputable journal.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on October 15, 2023, 09:41:29 AMMore work on the presentation today.
Think I'm ~3 slides short of done. Not bad.
I'll (preliminarily) finish the slides today.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on October 16, 2023, 02:12:40 PMI'll (preliminarily) finish the slides today.
Well, I did that.
Gonna go over my talk a bit. Gotta get in the groove, and gotta break the ice of unwillingness.

Did a bunch of that.
Just practising the talk today.
Running through the talk today, maybe reading a friend's paper.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on October 19, 2023, 10:55:06 AMRunning through the talk today, maybe reading a friend's paper.

Also cancelled a thing, which I've been putting off, cleaned out my inbox, and claimed two free books.

I finished a draft of the chapter I'm working on for book project #1, and now it is off with my RA to track down a few data points to add in. I'm crossing this off the list for now.
I also met with my colleague for book project #2. My task for next week will be to read the proposal and chapter over, make whatever edits are appropriate, and then send it back to my colleague for a final look before we send it off. Hopefully the publisher is still interested, as we have been dragging our feet on this for months.
In the meantime, my RA has gotten back to me with an outline and some sources for the book chapter (w colleague for an edited volume), so I think I'll spend this afternoon trying to get the ball rolling on that.
Paper #1 is still on the backburner, but I will get to as soon as these other tasks are off my plate.
Today's my last day to go over my talk, so I'll do that. Then I have to deliver the bloody thing tomorrow.

Did it. It still feels dodgy though.
Giving the talk today. I don't plan on doing anything else. But it'll be nice to be done and to return to finishing up my translation project.

Done. Even found a moment for a spot of work cleaning up the translation intro.
Right. So, on to the translation today. I doubt I'll have a chance to write much, but there's some reading/hunting I can do. But also a pile of marking.

Some writing, some reading for the translation intro.
I realized I dropped off the face of the earth because I forgot to login for a month!
From September Goals:- Draft first chapter of the book manuscript
- Prepare presentation for October on book topics
- If book chapter proposal is accepted, work on chapter draft with coauthor
The proposal got accepted, so the shared drive is set up with my coauthor.
I am working on the book chapters and presentation (which was supposed to be tomorrow but got moved to next week fortunately).
I got a R&R with the same colleague I wrote the chapter proposal with so I am going to work on edits soon.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on October 23, 2023, 09:16:29 AMSome writing, some reading for the translation intro.
Read a chunk, graded half.
Not much time today. A little writing, more marking.

I made great progress today on book project #2. It is in my colleague's hands for the moment, but at this point we have a realistic possibility of getting the proposal and chapter 1 off to the publisher by the end of the month.
I also did a little work on the book chapter, which will be more of a priority in November.

Well, I only ended up marking one paper. But I tracked down a source that was incredibly difficult to find, and wrote ~500 words. So that's something.
I'd like to finish marking this batch of essays, and read the thing I tracked down yesterday.

Working on the intro today. Time is short, but I should be able to get a historical figure or two worked in.

~800 words, two figures. This intro sure does keep expanding.
Nothing today, for other things need doing.

For the most part I have accomplished my October goals, except for paper #1, which I must get to in November.

Just got presentation done, whew!
I revisited the presentation today and actually finalized it. I also recently joined an interdisciplinary grant team and our proposal is due this coming week so I have been making edits on our shared document. I am also presenting my sabbatical research to my college colleagues (whoever wants free lunch) later this week, but it is more of a conversation than a presentation.
Should have a bit of time to write and read for the intro.

~1500 words, some reorganisation, read a pile of things, and completed almost all of the proposal form.
Not much time today, but I'll try to get a small section of I tro writing done.
Today, more work on the translation intro and maybe the prospectus. It's close to done, but still needs me to add a historical figure or two, tigthen up the paragraphs on two figures, and figure out what I need to say in the last section.
So, today... I'll work on adding at least one figure, and will try to tighten up one or both of the others needing it.

Wrote one up, and fixed some stuff for about ~800 words. Did all the reading I'll need to write the last entry and fix those two up.
