Title: Trivial Irrelevant Aggravations

I don't think this thread has been re-instated yet.  I'll start:

I want a pedicure but my legs are very hairy.

I left the drive-thru bag from the Impossible Whopper and onion rings in the car and the cab smelled like the dumpster behind a Burger King.  I had to drive with all four windows open to air it out.

How's this for "trivial"?  The letter "i" is sticking on my laptop keyboard.  I have to hammer it hard to get it to work.

It HAD TO be a vowel . . .

Perhaps learn from the work that's referenced below. Not, of course, the same letter, but... [note what letter's not used here]:

Is it a Mac perchance? You've described my life with my Macbook. One key after another, just randomly...Right now it's the ' key. I've blown compressed air on them, cleaned them with a swab...

All those wonderful scans I did over the weekend in the library I was visiting went in as single items. The scanner wouldn't batch them.

So I'm going through 100 scans at a time, labeling and saving them from my email where I sent them.

This usually works because I can send a group of scans, then another, and another.

In this case I have to do individual pages.

Why didn't they have the little desktop jobbies that batch things and let you see what you have? I had to stand at the copier/scanner for a couple of hours at a time, which was also a pain because it had to be re-coded for the email every so often.

The little ones can be given an email address and you can save it (secret trick) for use throughout the day (since no-one else knows or does this...) so you don't have to keep typing it in.

Trivial, because I'm still glad to get all those book pages for my notes on several different projects.

But massively irritating...I'm spending a couple hours on each send-sequence doing 100 scans individually because there's no way to batch them.

OK, thanks.

[/vent over.....]

Beautiful leaves! Leaves everywhere. Tracked into the house, strewn across the (new) car's carpet, mounded outside neighbors' homes waiting for the city's leaf-picker-upper truck, slathered in wet multicolored pieces all over the sidewalk, stuffed into the rain gutters on the house, tucked under the car's windshield wipers, lazily falling to the ground one, by one, by one.

Every year, I love their beauty and hate the mess they make--and I miss them when they're gone.

You would think (I do) that stapler technology is a mature one.  That the stapler has been perfected.  And yet . . . when you find a stapler that does just what a stapler should, you hug it to your bosom and let NO one borrow it.

I think that the house currently showing a score of Car 1, Garage door 0 is the same one that played this game a few years ago, but I'm not entirely sure.

Yes - the previous iteration of this game had the same result.  Of course, I don't have the specifics of vehicle type, direction of travel, type of door, etc. and it does seem that those sorts of variables could potentially influence the outcome.

My desktop has frozen twice today and had to be turned off and on again, and of course I had to keep reopening the files and programs I was working on each time.  Maybe I need to install the new Windows version, I think to myself.  Husband sends me the specs on the version he has recently installed so I can check to see if it's the same.  Ugh, I think... I don't want to have to restart my computer again today.  I open up Windows update, and the power goes out.  So, I guess if I do install it, I will have to restart my desktop yet again.  Trivial, but gee whiz.

My migraines are worse than ever and apparently my meds have stopped working on them. With COVID, I'm concerned about going to the doctor so I've been suffering through them but I'm not sure how much longer I can function unless I can get these back under control. Over the counter meds like excedrin are not touching them and neither are my prescription meds. Migraines also make me so nauseous that eventually I'm forced to take anti nausea meds which make me very sleepy. I've hydrated, used ice packs, neck massage, yoga, meditation, no caffeine, caffeine, electrolytes, dark rooms, essential oil sticks on my temple, avoiding the sun, no exercise, exercise, no processed foods, cutting out the well-known food triggers, and I'm just about to snap if I cannot make it just one day without a migraine either threatening or full-blown.

Long ago I was given Ergomar (by Rx), which was very quick-acting and effective on migraines.

I heard it might have been withdrawn for some reason, but perhaps something like it still exists?

Not everyone seemed to know about it, although I was going to a regular clinic at the time.

In any case, I can't imagine going through days and days of that.

I only had them infrequently and they were awful.

I hope you find something that works soon.

Well, the more I thought about it the more trivial it did seem. Many people have worse problems and I felt a little as if I was making a mountain out of a molehill!

I'll have to look into Ergomar. I have been on sumatriptan which makes me feel strange but they were knocking the migraines out. Now they only dull them enough so I can somewhat work and once it wears off they come right back.

Thank you, it helped to simply vent a little! Many people don't understand and think they are just headaches so when I mention them they look at me as though I'm being ridiculous.

Many people are stupid - as in, happily jumping to unwarranted conclusions as they busily judge others only by their own grossly limited experiences.  (But, I'm not bitter...)

Migraines are no joke, and it sounds as if you have serious ones.  If they're interfering that much with daily life, it might well be worth the risk to see an MD about them again.

One of our staff members has had persistent migraine problems.  It took several tries with the doctor, but they did eventually find a treatment routine that worked well for her.  She has now gone for several years without much trouble from them.  So don't give up!

My work computer has apparently decided that I should be writing in German, and has set the proofing language in German as default. I do not speak German.  I am a horrible speller, so it's not that unusual to see multiple words in a row misspelled, but when the spellcheck underlines entire sentences, I start to be concerned. Now, I am in a fight with the settings. I keep changing the proofing language to English, and it keeps switching it back to German. I just want to finish these documents and be done for today!

Mine does that when I've deliberately set it to French and then set it back. It somehow reverts even when I've re-set it two or three times.

It's also easy to bump the setting if you'd doing other formatting tasks, maybe symbols or something like that, as I recall.

My phone tends to switch between Spanish and English, but I don't know how that works for a computer, so I hope it got straightened out!

My trivial irrelevant aggravation is that I managed to get stuck in my coat---again---because I am apparently a toddler who can't zip it correctly.  Actually, toddlers are probably more proficient at zipping their coats.  Nothing makes you feel more like an adult than working at (read: yanking in frustration) the zipper to the point where you can push the coat to the floor around your ankles and step out of it.

Did you figure out your battery charge issue, EPW?

Just coming here to be aggravated about having accidentally signed my ex-husband up for texts about computer keyboards.  His # is one off from my old one, one I keep attached to an old BlackBerry in case I don't want something bugging me on my newer #.  I'm sure he won't care that much but will know I did it if my email address is included in the welcome text since I had to sign up using both and confirm by text.  Luckily he is a nice guy.

Seems drastic, but that might be appropriate.

However, the eavesdropping possibilities are quite entertaining.  I heard a lot about a local spa and their pedicures earlier today.  This afternoon it was a plea to contact your state senator about some bill regarding higher ed funding.  You never know what you might learn.

Huh--I always thought that 'false narrative' was a really useful term. In my head, at least, it means something like 'really big lie, which is believable because the liar is constructing a larger story that (is intended to) make the fundamental untruth seem more plausible.'

Lie: 'No, I didn't eat the last piece of cake.'.
False narrative: 'No, I couldn't have eaten the last piece of cake--you know that I work in the study, and the cake was stored in the kitchen. Actually, with the weather turning nicer, I left some windows open in the kitchen, and I thought I heard a rustling sound there this morning. We've had some very active raccoons this week--did you know I saw a whole family of raccoons in the yard last night? Baby raccoons are so cute. Anyway, they're very bold, so maybe a raccoon came in the window and ate the last piece of cake.'

Of course, 'false narrative' sounds gentler than 'lie', so maybe people are using the term differently from how I imagine it, to avoid accusing others of lying. Like 'racially charged'.

Every time I hear someone on television or radio use the terms "deep dive", "unpack", "pivot", and/or "false narrative".

The term "false narrative" really gets under my skin. I just want to shout "you mean a LIE? That's LYING."

Huh--I always thought that 'false narrative' was a really useful term. In my head, at least, it means something like 'really big lie, which is believable because the liar is constructing a larger story that (is intended to) make the fundamental untruth seem more plausible.'

I've always thought of it more in the context of someone messing with chronology to make a case. For instance, "He attacked her because he found out she was having an affair", whereas in reality the attack was before he found out about the affair. So while all of the objective facts of the narrative may in fact be true, the causal relationships aren't.

Just checking, are "First-world Problems" before or after "Trivial Irrelevant Aggravations," as we move towards "Vinhales" and full-out "Vents"?

Or do the aggravations preceed the problems in simplicity?

Just so's I don't post stuff in the wrong place....

Wow, what reason is IT using to not upgrade it?

Yeah, that too--actually, maybe that better captures my understanding of the term. It's about making false claims sound plausible because they make a pretty story.

The secretaries get the worst of the worst.  Everyone is on a five-year cycle, and then the five-year old computer goes to the secretaries and work-study students.  This one is on its second re-cycle, which means it's at least ten years old.  As long as it turns on, they won't replace it.  I might drop a heavy object on it by accident.

I can remember when I worked for an obscure office in a big university library that we were one of the places that got the old equipment whenever there was an upgrade.  Mainly I remember the ancient printers.  Twice I thought the office where I worked was finally going to get a good new printer, only to find that we were getting yet another of those antiques.  It made me wonder whether the university had a warehouse full of them somewhere.  Eventually they ran out of them, and we finally got something better.

Huh, I don't think my tomato sauces are sweet, but then I get "natural" ones that don't have added sugar, or make my own with garden tomatoes also without added sugar. I shall continue happily violating the laws of nature.

Edited to add: Pesto is the best pizza sauce. Home-made pesto, fresh mozzarella, and garden tomatoes on a home-made crust. That is pizza as nature intended!

For now, it is kinda working.  It has an ancient monitor with a square display, and makes ominous noises every now and then.  I had to find a 25-foot ethernet cord since it can't manage wi-fi.  That's actually okay, though.  It often loses Zoom calls, or at least the video portion.  This past year has taxed it beyond its capabilities, and aged it severely.  Kinda like most of us, I'd guess.

I have a small irritation on the inside of my lower lip, exactly where my top teeth touch it when I say words beginning with 'f' or 'v'. I'm sitting here trying to keep my tongue thrust forward between my teeth and my lower lip, and it's making my tongue muscles sore. But if I try to use my teeth to keep my tongue in place to give the muscles a rest then my tongue starts hurting from the bite pressure. Overall I have a sad mouth today.

A tiny bit of baking-soda toothpaste might ease the concentrated acidity in the area, and help the irritation go away.

If you can get a brand without peroxide, so much the better, but even with it, so long as you wipe it off after a bit and don't swallow (much) it should be fine.

I've had something similar.  My irritation is a little lower down so that my teeth don't touch it.  However, it makes brushing my teeth painful.  I've been brushing only in the morning for several days now to spare raking over that spot.  The sore is now improving, so I should be able to go back to brushing normally.

I've also been dealing with a sore throat for the past couple of days.  It feels better now, but sounds worse.  At least my voice should be able to hold up when I speak to the local Rotary Club today.  Sure glad I don't have to do public speaking all the time.

That lower-down pain could be an abscess, and your sore throat could be connected to it.

Sorry to say--but all the unusual number of sore throats and colds I had one year stopped once the little germ factory that was an abscess I didn't even know I had was drained and dealt with.

Had to wash a bunch of socks (15 pairs) with other laundry, so I thoughtfully herded them all into a mesh laundry bag so that they didn't get lost or staticked into other clothing.  I don't know what happened in the dryer, but upon retrieving the laundry I found that the bag was open a hair, and there were no socks in the bag.  The bag was empty with nary a sock.  How? This seems improbable.

ALHS's truck wouldn't start a couple of weeks ago. No rush to fix it--he doesn't work, and he can't do the work himself anymore (former mechanic, but has health problems), plus June is always a tight money month for us.

Monday afternoon, I asked him to take my Malibu to the store for some burger buns for supper.  No start.  After charging overnight, still nothing. Later, he charged up the Blazer's battery and rigged it into my car (different fit, but it worked).  Ta-da!

Except, when he went to shut the car hood, it won't latch.  It'll close and hold, but that final, closed-all-the-way latch, doesn't. It's OK for around town/slow speeds, but not on the highway (i.e., Murphy's Law:  it will be fine, until a gust of road wind pops the hood into the windshield).  Sigh.

Needing several prescriptions in the town 15 miles away, I woke up this morning, said, "Go to the local store and put a new battery in and be done with it." He agreed, did so, and it starts like a champ.

Except. . . . the guy who put it in started to put it in backwards, and initially touched the cables wrong, jumping a spark as ALHS said, "DONT!"  All seemed well, except the radio wouldn't work.   After a couple of YouTubes to locate and replace the fuse (there are three fuse blocks in this stupid car--WHY???), the car runs and the radio works.  Victory!

Except for the hood latch.  ALHS, who has driven any number of beater cars and trucks in our 42 years together, has no pride, and put a rachet strap on the hood, hooked it to the bumper, and is currently picking up the Rx's and a few groceries at WalMart in the Beverly Hillbillies Malibu, as he called it.

Ye gods.  Mercury is DEFINITELY in Gatorade (as Kid #1 calls "retrograde"--and she's had a million and one little problems for the past couple of weeks, too).  At least I'm laughing and posting these here, instead of a major meltdown in the Venting thread.

Did I mention we're headed to 104 degrees here, plus "dangerous" humidity, here today?  As long as the AC and electricity and iced tea hold out, it's all good.

LOL,apl68!  Yes, I have--a '75 Malibu that constantly jumped timing, so I'd have to take off the air cleaner, shove in a screwdriver to keep the carburetor open, jump in and start it and hope like hell it'd keep running til I could get in and give it the gas so it wouldn't die!  Ah, college days.....

I resent the appropriation of my adopted culture. Unless your car speakers are sitting on the rear deck and you have an "American by birth, Southern by the grace of God" bumper sticker next to your West Virginia license plate, please tell him not to use the h-word. LOL!  Apologies, Fishbrains!

I guess we have climbed the social/economic ladder somewhat in our 40 years together, at that.  (He did have the huge speakers in the back window of his '65 Fairlane when we met--loosened the window seal with too much Led Zeppelin, so that they got wet when it rained!--and then moved up to a mid-60s Chevy flatbed pickup with the speakers mounted to the bed.)

I guess that's why I never get too fussed about gloom-and-doom predictions.  We lived "way poor" for a long time, and while I'd rather not go back to it, I know we can make it, if it comes to that.

Back to the regularly scheduled thread.....

Certainly not worthy of a vent, so putting it here:
I dislike the practice of students "liking" my emails rather than sending a response. I know, I know, this probably means I'm an old fuddyduddy. But, I dislike the mix of email and social media procedures, which only seems to perpetuate my students sending me emails as if they were texting me.
On the other hand, it does indicate that they've likely read the email, so, I guess that's a step in the right direction.

I bought a tub of cream cheese at the local co-op the other day and as I just went to use it, I saw that it's non-dairy. Silly me, 1) for assuming that an item that's named after two dairy products would have said products in it, and 2) for not looking more closely at the store!

Another vote for Vicks. Cotton socks and gloves (EPW, I know you can't stand gloves, but try the thin cotton ones) will protect your sheets from the Vicks.

Another addition to the dry skin remedies (though those with eczema might want to check--I seem to remember reading that this can make the eczema worse:  diaper cream with vitamins A & D ("A&D Ointment" for the brand name, but the cheap no-brand stuff from Aldi's or the dollar store also works).  It's the only thing that has any effect on my dry feet since I've had diabetes.

The only problem with the A&D is that it reeks, and it might stain clothes.  I always have ALHS save the slipper socks he gets from any hospital procedure; after I slather my feet with the ointment, I put on an old pair of thick white socks, and then the heavy slipper socks over those, and go to bed.  By morning, it's amazing how soft the skin is. (I launder the socks in hot water and OxyWhite, but it does still stain the white socks, so be aware before using.)

Went shopping with a friend yesterday. While we were waiting in line, there was a kid nearby standing with his mother (at least I assume that's who she was) and playing some game or other on his phone. It kept making noises of varying lengths and at random intervals that sounded just like an electronic version of a cat screaming bloody murder! It was really loud, too. It was a long wait, and crazy cat lady that I am, I couldn't stand to keep hearing this over and over. Luckily, soon after I quietly told my friend I had to get away from the noise, the kid's mom pulled him out of the store. I have no idea what the game was, but I hope I never hear it again.

I've never had that problem in a serious way, though I have in small ways. I put medium eggs into boiling water, five minutes for soft boiled, 10 minutes for hard boiled. Then I immediately douse them with streams of cold tap water for as long as my patience on an empty stomach in the morning lasts. This last may be the trick to solving the problem.

Having boiled four eggs to hard-state, and following some directions leading to perfection, found two of them difficult to peel w/o a lot of white-stuff loss; one peeled perfectly; the last became a chaos of whites-glued-to-shell fragments.  I ate the yolk and gave up.  One fewer salad for dinner.  IS there a method to ensure a hard-boiled egg can be easily peeled?  Can we hear from the Virgin Hen Sterility Union?

I've never had that problem in a serious way, though I have in small ways. I put medium eggs into boiling water, five minutes for soft boiled, 10 minutes for hard boiled. Then I immediately douse them with streams of cold tap water for as long as my patience on an empty stomach in the morning lasts. This last may be the trick to solving the problem.

Try it. You'll probably like it.

I tried m.o.l. that (via directions on a YouTube site). And after twelve minutes from the boiling to the turning off of the heat and covering the pot, and then into the ice-cube ice bath to halt everything.  Well--the results are as I wrote.  I think the answer is some kind of enforced hen quality control.  Let the cocks speak firmly.

We have natural experiments here. I am at a scientific loss.

Yes, but not in the direction you might think-- the older the eggs, the easier they are to peel. Why? Over time, the egg looses some water (the shell is not perfectly evaporation-proof), and so shrinks a bit, pulling away from the membrane and shell.
So use the freshest eggs for out-of-shell cooking, and save some older ones for boiling.

I was just looking this up for something else.

The FDA has instructions, or I found these notes here:

   https://therealfooddietitians.com/how-to-make-easy-peel-hard-boiled-eggs/

a. Roll the hard-boiled egg around and make the shell crinkly.

b. Put the eggs in an ice bath so the skin contracts, making it pull away from the hardened albumen so it doesn't stick.

Theory makes sense. Practice claims I've not had the problem! Theory must be incomplete.

Last gambit +1: What's the elevation? I'm near sea level. [Different boiling points.]

Is Juvenal making soft boiled eggs in Colorado, when he thinks he's making hard boiled eggs near the Dead Sea?

This is all very challenging and difficult.

Practice suggests you may never have had actually fresh eggs. Most supermarket eggs aren't all that fresh.

It's actually not the regulators, it's the companies. By putting "best by" dates on things, they encourage more waste (stores pull from the shelf, consumers toss) and more spending. I know that's hard for you to accept that "the market" could be wronging you :-)

Indeed; it's one of modern life's mysteries.  I live nowhere near the Dead Sea or Denver.  My elevation is exactly 100 feet above sea level.  I've heard the "freshness eggs" vs. "veteran eggs," idea, but supermarket eggs might actually be of different ages in the carton.  I suppose I could set a carton aside (in the fridge) for a month to veteranize them.  Or just resign myself to the "will it--won't it?" game as each egg comes to my hand, white-shrouded.

For eggs, it's state regulations, but some states do not allow sell-by dates. When a "sell-by" date appears on a carton bearing the USDA grade shield, the code date may not exceed 30 days from the date of pack.

Ah, one operation I forgot to mention in getting my near perfect eggs: I puncture the shell at the big end, where the gas bubble is [I'm a big-endian.] before putting the egg into boiling water. One can buy so-called egg piercers cheap. [Five bucks at Amazon, e.g.]

About 3 years ago one of my packages was at the center down the road from me and supposed to be delivered in the morning. When it didn't arrive, I found it had been sent back to the regional center, then to Louisville, then somewhere else. A day or so later it retraced every step and was then properly delivered. Since Amazon is now closing some of its warehouses I wonder if that will complicate delivery?

The delivery was made three days late, and instead of the two books I had ordered, I got a box of diapers. Now I'm waiting on the reorder and have to return the wrong one. Grrr.

Maybe it's the morning for random alarms -- I'm the only one in my office building right now, and a loud alarm sound has come a couple times from a colleague's office. Campus patrol came to check it out, but it was of course silent then, and my colleague has no idea what it could be.

Probably TMI, but our puppy Rigby went into her first heat this morning. (Neither ALHS or I have ever had an unneutered female. Fortunately, having raised two girls and been one myself, I've got this.)  Poor baby clearly isn't feeling good.

At least now we can look forward to getting her spayed, since her vet wanted to wait until afterwards for some specific reasons.

Not a big deal, but as the title says, it's a trivial aggravation, coming as I'm drowning in papers to grade.

My sister and I, who live about 1000 miles apart, mailed holiday gifts to each other via USPS a couple weeks ago. My package to her arrived one day after the estimated delivery date; fine. Her package to me went into limbo, then arrived at the regional distribution center near me on Thursday, where it was rerouted back to her regional distribution center, and is now supposedly being delivered to her house today. We're both waiting to see if the address was somehow obliterated. If not, she'll be using UPS or FedEx in the future...

Mailing a package to Hawai'i, via UPS.  It is, granted, an oddly shaped situation.  On lone thin pckg, and 5 other smaller, squarer  items.  Cost for USP to package them up.  Price to ship - $900.

No f'n way.

Go to USPS, they look at the stuff, say box these up together, they will be $25 to get there on time.  The other one is $45 on time, $23 by 1Jan24.

WTF USP?

And first class postage goes up soon.  Buy some rolls of "Forever Stamps" now.  They'll keep.

Quote from: sinenomine on December 16, 2023, 08:20:37 AMMy sister and I, who live about 1000 miles apart, mailed holiday gifts to each other via USPS a couple weeks ago.

The latest update: the package was rerouted from my sister's post office back to the regional distribution center near me. My sister spoke to a manager, who said this bouncing has been happening a lot. At this rate, there may be no presents under my tree this year!

That reminds me--I need to get rolls of stamps for the library this week or the next.  We need some, and we've still got some money in this year's postage budget.

I miss-timed breakfast preparations this morning, so I had to figure out how to keep the muffin halves & their toppings warm while the egg finished poaching.

The publisher provided test bank questions refer to things NOT in the updated textbook.

I write with my right hand, but for various reasons I mouse with my left. Usually I just put the normal mouse on the left-hand side of my computer and off I go.

The ergonomics guy at my new job came in and when he noticed I mouse left, thoughtfully provided me a super spiffy left-handed mouse. Yay.

Except... the buttons are reversed. So now I'm left-clicking when I should be right-clicking and it's driving me batty. But by the mid-afternoon I have the hang of it.

Meanwhile, the mouse I use at home is not reversed. So I come home from work and there I go, wrong-clicking again.

Oy.

You can switch the mouse buttons in your operating system settings.  (Another left-handed mouser here.)

I know, but I never bothered and now I'm used to it. I think it will be good brain exercise to keep getting the hang of different mice. Mouses?

Why did Dell put the Numbers Lock/Unlock key on my laptop right where it's so easy to accidentally hit it? I'm tired of hitting a number and then having my cursor take an excursion to somewhere across the screen.
