Title: What are You Listening to Now?
Post by: evil_physics_witchcraft on June 06, 2020, 07:51:08 PM
I didn't see a music thread, so I figured I'd start one.

Current song on the radio: People are Strange

I've had Matthew West's "Quarantine Life" running through my head for days.

Fibber McGee and Molly.

My lockdown has been spent with the Sirius Radio Classics channel, when the CNN feed becomes too much.

(I also love Jack Benny and Edgar Bergen, and I've become a big fan of Phil Harris and Alice Faye.)

More "What's my Line?" reruns (with all the folks you've mentioned, ALH, as mystery guests) and a film noir series...some fairly 《noir-profund》; others more 《gris-legere》...

And, contrapuntally, going over now to listen to the 11 AM online church service.

There was a "Crazy Rhythms" thread and another for classical music awhile back.  I found both on page 3 of this forum section.

Just because it was there.

   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er1xUCElhMI

It was nice enough. It just didn't seem to go anywhere.

If I hadn't put it on to wind down and go to sleep with, I'd have to listen to at least three more to figure out if that's how it should be played or if the interpretation was off. The player was good, the small orchestra was fine, so I'm thinking it's the composer, but I don't like to decide that without checking things out further.

'Nother day, 'nother task.

'night...

'Strong Man' written by Oscar Jackson and sung by Abbey Lincoln. This was 1957. How far have we come?

My household loves "What's My Line?", and we're also big fans of "I've Got A Secret."  There are some incredible people on there, including a man who as a child was present at Lincoln's assassination.

As for what music I'm listening to — Georgian polyphony.

I was about to ask if you had mis-spellled "Gregorian" then thought the better of it and looked it up.

Thanks for this lovely addition to my playlist!

I just discovered the band Aephanemer, and they're fantastic (if melodic death metal is your jam). So they've been on hard rotation.

I had never heard of this band and think of myself as more of a thrash fan (though I guess one could debate where the line is drawn in some cases), but I listened to a couple songs and really like the music.  I just looked for top-rated songs (Unstoppable, Memento Mori, and Bloodline, according to one site), so if you have any particular recommendations, I'd like to check them out.

Mamselle (and all), that Georgian selection is a bit lukewarm. Check out these two that may knock your socks off:

The incomparable "Tsinskaro": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q6DUbuAY3A

And the absorbing lockdown version of "Heyamoli": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrUtE9GMeAI

Georgians sit around after meals and sing ("table music"), with the most mind-blowing harmonies. YouTube has lots of informal videos of them doing this. New videos go up often, so from time to time I just cruise YouTube and see what's been put up recently.  E.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRcg_jwup5s&list=PL-YSOZcVi8oUUADoE2sCVnNhFeaVKIiPS

Or okay, one more table song, "Chela": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiJFOeh0Ovc

Georgian polyphony was one of the pieces of music sent out to the far reaches of the galaxy on the Voyager.

So, then I found this one.

Trouble is, with the cool yodeling and other instruments being used, I have to stop what I'm working on and flip the screen up to watch them.

It's hard to use as background music to work to, when that happens....

No worries! I was thinking song-wise for that band aside from the ones I mentioned, but if you have band recommendations too, fantastic.

I quite like Crows, Ghosts, and The Sovereign, in addition to the ones you mention.

Alas, I don't much care for thrash (although I haven't explored the genre in a couple decades, so maybe things have changed?). But if you want to explore more melodeath, you should try Amon Amarth, Finntroll, and Dark Tranquillity for a start. Arch Enemy is pretty similar to Aephanemer, especially the more recent stuff, so that might also be of interest. And then there's Nekrogoblikon, who are a lot of fun.

Thanks! I just listened to the other three Aephanemer songs you listed.  I like the music a lot, and Crows and the music from The Sovereign remind me so much of a song I love that I can't think of! I will try to come up with it in case it's one you would be interested in (and, also, I really want to listen to it now).  Argh.  I will check out the other bands as well!

What kind of fool am I, written by Leslie Bricusse and  Anthony Newley, performed by Sammy Davis, Jr. (Live version).

One of my students used data about the Grammy Award for Song of the Year winners in an assignment recently. That was an unusual data choice for my course, so I needed to verify some of it. I'm now building a playlist of winners and nominees, as I listen to how U.S. popular music has changed since 1959.

I found out that the Galavant TV series soundtrack was on iTunes and quickly downloaded that and am enjoying it so much.

ETA: I loved the soundtrack while watching the show, and that makes a lot more sense now.  Apparently Alan Menken (listed as having credits that include Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hercules, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Home on the Range, Enchanted and Tangled) composed the songs!

a) The Theme from Jeeves and Wooster, most recently, because I included it on an ear training slide for a music student(one wants to lead them into useful hobbies, if surreptitiously, at times...)

b) Whale sounds, same slide (especially the one where the whale gives this big, heaving groan-like sound before diving, it sounds like, "Oh, get me out of here....")

c) The Polyphonic Choir referred to earlier on this thread, I've used it several times now as an example of vocal music for students who know Western stuff well enough, just to tickle their ears and get them to hear new musics...thanks, Hegemony!!)

First five Fairport Convention albums are classics, all different, and all worth it in my book.  Along with that, the live album from the end of that period, "House Full" is good.

Of their later period, Gladys' Leap has some good material.  I recall at one time listening to The Five Seasons album, but I couldn't swear to it being great. If they still tour, they are worth seeing live.

Richard Thompson solo (and with Linda Thompson) is just whole other "thing", but I more or less like (almost) all of it

While home for Christmas I got to hear my mother play the piano.  She was a very accomplished pianist when she was younger.  In my lifetime she has mostly played piano for the small churches that Dad has pastored (The pastor's wife is often the default church pianist in small congregations).  Living a busy life as a mother and teacher has kept Mom from keeping her piano skills as sharp as they might otherwise be.  But she has always been a very good church pianist.  Although she does put in little flourishes, she has always been careful to play arrangements that are very singable by the congregation at large.  Years ago one church member paid her the compliment of saying that when she played a hymn you could almost hear the piano singing the lyrics.

She's still playing for the church at age 77.  For years she was one of the town's go-to wedding and funeral pianists.  When Mom was 13 she was already their church's pianist and had to play for her own baptismal service.  She's been known to joke that she'll probably end up having to play for her own funeral.

Yea, keyboards!! Go, mom!!!

My piano teacher was in her late 80s when I started with her. I could never verify it, except stylistically, but she said she'd been one of Schnabel's last pupils. I'm still working from and teaching what she taught me.

Me, myself, right now...I would love to be listening to one of my long-looped chant tapes, or some Barenboim, or something, but I have to finish this transcription and you can't listen to music while you...

But afterwards..

This thread reminds me of my favorite Charlie Brown joke, where he, Lucy, and Linus are looking up at the clouds, and Lucy asks what kinds of pictures Linus sees in the sky. Linus sees groups of clouds that resemble the Honduras, the sculptor Thomas Eakins, and the Stoning of Stephen. Lucy notes that was very good, and asks Charlie Brown what he sees.

"Well, I was going to say I saw a ducky and a horsie, but I changed my mind."

Oh, and I'm listening to the Clash, "Police on My Back."

Learn something new every day.

I was about to rush in to type that Eakins was a painter, not a sculptor, but thought I'd better look him up to be sure.

I see he did 3-D works as well, which makes sense in a way, his painted bodies are very plastic, but I hadn't known of his other work.

Thanks!!

A Very Strange Medley by Barry Manilow.

Asked Alexa to play "strange", wanting audiobook "strange" something. Should have asked her to read, but instead I got this odd compilation of commercial jingles from childhood. Be'lakor - The Smoke of Many Fires

Solid melodeath, newly discovered. From what I can tell, pretty much all the songs are pretty long (like, 7-10 minutes), with a fair few changes of tempo (which is a feature I've always loved in a song).

Haha, I love that album! But is your mental state Superbeast or Living Dead Girl?

(I saw him live at a festival about ten years ago, but I'm afraid it wasn't a very good performance at all. He was followed by Finntroll, who tore it up.)

The Kingston Trio. They were mentioned in the book I'm reading, with characters debating whether they should be applauded for making folk music popular in the early 1960s or derided for commercializing folk songs with inauthentic arrangements. I wouldn't call them folk singers, because at least half of what I've heard isn't folk song.

The Dead Celebrities podcast, also known as Celebrity Estates: Wills of the Rich and Famous. It's aimed at financial planners, with the celebrities being the hook to get you interested in the estate planning issue discussed during most of the podcast. I'm finding the discussions of trusts, bringing up children so they're motivated to strive for some goal as adults, and planning for taxes interesting.

I stumbled across it through a link in a student bibliography. They cited it in a paper on the Chicago Cubs, which led me to the episode on the Wrigley family. The podcast's goals are focused on advisor education and how advisors can grow their businesses, but they're right that the problems of high net worth clients also occur in ordinary families at a much lower volume.

Captain Diane Carlson Evans, a nurse serving in the Vietnam War, talking about holding the hand of a soldier as he lay in bed and died. Then a nice rendition of 'You've Got a Friend' and then Colin Powell paying tribute to women in the armed forces. With 'You'll Never Walk Alone' playing in the background. (It never fails to amaze me how many different ways Richard Rodgers could write a song). Now Gary Sinise is talking about President Truman. What a show! I am overwhelmed. Norah Jones playing a version of "Black Hole Sun" at the Fox Theater in Detroit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbQ08Ixczvo), five days after what became Soundgarden's last show ever - and five days after Chris Cornell's suicide.

It's jazzy and reharmonized but not self-consciously so. She took the power of the original and put it somewhere different - trading the anguish in the lyrics for the dissonant overtones and climbing arpeggios at the end, as though she were setting the ghost of him free. It's lovely, sad and elegiac.

There's something to discuss from many vantage points. My big question is whether this is an intentional attempt to subvert the norms of contemporary popular music. Most people that sing out of tune will fade in and out of being in tune. This artist, however, never once sings a single note in tune, as far as I can tell. That actually takes some skill--to sing EVERY note out of tune.

Some people are saying that this is a social science experiment, because the artist is a grad student in the social sciences.

Others are saying this a marketing gimmick, whose true aims will be revealed later after we've all been had, and the producers have made their $.

Others are calling it "outsider" music.

I'm going to throw out that this might simply be a COVID-19 lockdown project for some bored performance art, timed art, and music students.

I'm also going to throw out that this could well be a study in how society will give an attractive artist the benefit of the doubt.

I've found that Immortalized by Disturbed is good grading music. Earlier I was listening to Metallica's S&M.

SO's Mom gave him some items like a stereo and some old vinyl (she's downsizing). We just listened to "Smoke on the Water" on original VINYL (visibly warped vinyl, but it sounded pretty good!).

No, I am not that old. I just listen to a variety of music.

I just finished listening to "Forest Drums" by a student who needs to remember that getting faster doesn't mean getting louder, and slowing down doesn't automatically mean getting softer.

Separating those two impulses out is almost as hard as getting 4th-5th finger independence to work....

Jack Logan, a swimming-pool pump mechanic by day who is a prolific songwriter by night. He's appeared to have hung it up for good, but his 42 song debut album was well reviewed and got him and his band on Conan O'Brien's show. Having rediscovered his second album Mood Elevator, I've gotten a hold of more recent offerings - all of which are great. He's also put various soundboard recordings on his past shows on [i=https://archive.org/details/JackLogan]archive.org.[/i]

Yes. As weird as the film itself was, her singing, and the dancing with Kelly were worth it.

I'm listening to a voice student start to get a decent bass sound on Hatikvah after having worked through a year + on his voice changing.

This is for you Metal fans only.  Rockzilla is a contemporary Heavy Metal band from Spain.  They should be as big as Metallica:

This is for brainy people who like nice, dry, light, witty pop.  Bishop Allen deserves a much bigger audience.

My husband and I decided to check out K-pop after hearing a lot about it without ever hearing a K-pop song.  Apple has playlists that are regularly updated, so we listened to one of those and have continued to do so.  We have also listened to part of the Rolling Stone top 100 playlist on Spotify.  There are a couple really catchy songs.  I was a little surprised that we haven't really found any BTS or Blackpink songs that we are loving so far, given that those seem to be highly popular bands.  Some of the ones I tend to like to listen to are Lip Gloss by The Boyz (https://youtu.be/w1YuAJFlVRs?si=LVdZIk-fttY9_dfH
and shorter "live" performance https://youtu.be/II-9jGwW56g?si=NpxdV_q9C1pgWwwI) and Love Lee by AKMU (https://youtu.be/EIz09kLzN9k?si=V6jrXFmTKRfqmSQP), which has a really cute video.  I usually listen to heavier stuff but am kind of appreciating lighter sounds at the moment.  There are some really creative videos in this genre.

Has anyone else signed up for this 1001 albums generator (https://1001albumsgenerator.com/)? There's a book of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1001_Albums_You_Must_Hear_Before_You_Die), and this site will generate one for you per day.  You can then rate it the following day (and add any listening notes) when the next album is revealed to you.  A friend posted about it, and I figured I could use some exposure to new-to-me music (I am not great at branching out).  I've done it for a few days and so far my assignments have been groups I've heard of but had not listened to or have heard different music from, and I have been pleasantly surprised.  Some I had just not had a particularly good impression of before.  I haven't bought any of the albums so far, but I have added a couple songs on Spotify. My husband is also doing this now and is getting different albums, so it's not just giving everyone the same one every day.  You can read everyone else's listening notes, too.  Not sure if I'm a fan of that because I (you probably know by now if you have read my book or movie reviews) am terrible at describing things.  I mostly note whether I like something or not and anything that stood out to me.  Sometimes nothing stands out.  There may be a setting to change that.  You can supposedly form listening groups as well, so we might try that.  I don't know if that syncs your album generation up or you just have an easier way to share your opinions with each other or what.  Each album I have received has had links to listen to it on several platforms, which makes it easy to port around with me (e.g., Spotify, Amazon music, Apple music, something else).  I'm new to this but thought it was a neat idea so figured I'd share it.
