Title: Forumites I'm Missing
Post by: aside on June 12, 2019, 07:55:39 AM
Restarting a thread begun by t_folk in 2008 on the CHE fora.

Far too many to try to list them all now, but to launch things I will mention yellowtractor.  Perhaps he will trundle this way.

He posted on CHE the other day, and I think said something about meandering over here.

I agree. We want his wise, pithy, anchoring sound-bites around!

He's listed as a probationary member, he just needs to do a post to start up.

Heere's hoping!

Perhaps friendly friends and colleagues could contact those we're missing and encourage new/postier membership.

Don't forget as well that some people were taking the opportunity to have new monikers.  Perhaps "missing" people are just renamed people (I can hope, can't I?)

That's true, too.

In a couple cases, it's making me a little (more) crazy...

I'll think I recognize a "voice" and then I'll be wrong...!

Just really glad to see so many here, now.

I always enjoyed her posts, too...and there should be a link to the "Black Binders 'o' Doom" thread ("A Plagarist's Tale"? I think...) somehow, that was a classic.

I think both her puppies died within a very short time of each other; I don't recall if she adopted another dog (or two) or if it was about that time that she stopped posting.

That information would be in the "Translating Dog to English" thread, I think.

I have some knowledge of sikora's, anthroid's, and larryc's current doings.  All three are generally fine.  Manny is gone, but Annie is still giving anthroid lots of stories to tell, along with her newer dog, about whom I'll say nothing so that anthroid can tell you herself when she's good and ready.  And larryc seems to be having a blast doing his thing.

I actually ran into Polly on Reddit.  She is still using her old moniker and still aiding and betting her particular form of wisdom regarding academia, particularly the job hunt, over there.  In her own words, she just "couldn't stay away from the HE advice giving."

She is very bitter because she apparently received an email from the moderators telling her to behave in a more decorous manner for polite society, so she took her game to the other platform.

Wasn't me complaining to the mods. I kept all my clashes with Polly on the board where they could be seen. Why? Because when the forum moved here from CHE the old Mahagonny reported that I wouldn't be moving with the herd. I didn't expect anyone to care, but to my surprise PolLy wrote 'no you should come aboard. You have a right to weigh in.' So I did. Later I thought 'she just likes having me to kick around' but then I remembered the few times we agreed on something and she gave me a nod, which many posters would probably never do for whatever reason. I didn't like the way she did her old job at tiny college in OH or wherever it was, but I eventually realized, she didn't like the job either, despite the energy she put in.
What did old Plato say..."Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle."
Polly gave it to you rough and straight.
ETA: One of her favorite riffs, the value of facing your own responsibility and your own choices, can be expressed with barely a whisper and still get you in big trouble these days, in our current political climate.

Though I hope Polly returns, I don't mind that she took a break. For the record, I didn't report her either, though there were a couple of incidents around the time of the election when I very nearly did so I am not astonished that someone did eventually. But I didn't and probably never would. Usually when I feel that its time for someone particularly to go away, its me that needs to go away for  a bit (I think I did for like a week! then I stopped looking at political  threads when I did come back).

Huh? Polly is one of the reasons that the replacement fora exists. One would think that the mods would give Polly a pass and look the other way, because I've seen much worse behavior (like a poster telling someone to f**k off, among other things), and no one seemed to get spanked. At least when Polly pissed people off, it's not because Polly engaged in a stupid way.

Of course they would give her a pass. I don't quite believe she's staying away out of bitterness or hurt feelings. I think that's a handy excuse. If I had to guess I'd say she has a distrust of diversity staff on steroids who are holding higher education under siege at this time, but doesn't care to get into it. That theory is probably why I'm taking back everything I used to think about her.

Certainly she rubs people the wrong way, and has strident and not always very well reasoned opinions.   She also seems to think her chem engineering PhD qualifies her to say things that, well, it doesn't.   But 'complaining' or 'reporting' others here for disagreements is, well, childish.

Steve Allen wrote a book entitled 'Dumpth' - Ways For People To Start Thinking Better. One of the common mistakes he described was believing that because you have accomplished a lot in one field you pick things up quickly.
(Do we dare mention?) Tom Sowell maintains that intellectuals ruin society by using their fame in their field as a supposed marker of authority to make public pronouncements outside of their field which people in government charged with serious tasks then have to contend with. Examples were Bertrand Russell and Noam Chomsky. One man's opinion.

But whe3n you get a real bulldog on your side in an argument, it's kind of heartening.

Once one of the mods deleted one of my posts which I thought was a bit strident, but I guess their line was a bit more finely drawn than mine.

So perhaps it was the mods who were trying to hold her back, and not any particular poster?

I find the ignore user function highly useful.

In other news, through another venue I "met" another forum member. When we figured out the connection they sincerely apologized to me for being mean sometimes. We're "friends" now.

Honestly, I don't really keep track of who agrees, disagrees, whatever. Posting can come across a bit blunt when we can't hear tone or context. I just learn from who is saying something and take it for information, not personally.

The only poster I routinely ignore is one who repeatedly posts the same thing over and over again, ad equus mortuus, regardless of context. But that's easy enough.

I went with ignoring Polly toward the end--now I'm down to just ignoring one person, unless Polly decides to return. I never reported her; I might have thought about it once or twice, and then got a sandwich instead. She was smart about what she was smart about.

On the only occasion when I did report someone, I posted that I'd done so, because I was kinda pleased with myself. I'll probably just stick with ignoring going forward.

As someone who has been at a small college for 22 years, I thought Polly had excellent insight into small colleges for someone who only worked at one for several years pre-tenure. Also, had a great command of databases relevant to academia. As for opinions, well, everyone's got one, and I agreed with her on stuff until I didn't.

I think Vox Principalis was a colleague of mine for a number of years.  In 2015 our third-rate LAC terminated three of us (tenured) in the music department, including Vox (if it was, indeed, she).  She was a phenomenal voice teacher, department chair, and opera director.  She recruited tirelessly and successfully for the department, and, of course, for the college, and her reward was to be terminated, proving that no good deed goes unpunished.  She has since left the area, and, as far as I know, is no longer working in academe.

She did have very worthwhile experiences and insights.  Too much there just to ignore.  But she sure could come across as arrogant at times.  She also gave a distinct impression that she was of the opinion that the humanities were for people who weren't bright enough or diligent enough to succeed in the natural sciences.

I was under the impression that she was at an amazing place where getting retrenched would never happen. She never once mentioned that her place of employment was under severe duress. Are you sure we are talking about the same person (from Indiana I think), the same one who was also a makeup expert?

Yes, that would be the impression she gave.   Scientists and humanists have had this internecine quarrel for, well, nigh onto forever.   I confess I am on the humanities side, of course, and consider that the depth of reading and analysis skills given by such an education is, well... better, in these areas, than an engineering degree.   But I do try not to emphasize my views.   Sometimes she made it very very hard.

I am pretty sure that she was Vox.  I think we were all under the impression for a time that our jobs were safe, but a new President came in who was gung-ho sports and thought music was frivolous, so, even though enrollments were fairly high, he insisted on abolishing most of the music program, including terminating tenured faculty.  I should mention that she is now a model, which would play into here knowledge of makeup.

I'm very sorry to read about what happened to her and you. It sounds like you both have moved on, and from the tone of your post, you are thriving with no bitterness.

There were posters on the old CHE fora who posted a lot, and Vox was one of them. Even though I disagreed with her on some things and we even sparred occasionally, including one epic tussle that I will never forget, I do miss her presence.  A lot of what she discussed resonated with me, and for the most part, she was well-intentioned and gave a lot of informed thoughts to discussions, which often reflected her vast authentic experiences. Yeah, I know she tended to be counted upon to be part of or even lead a pile-on on some hapless clueless newbie, but I think her heart was in the right place. And, I did learn and grow and become a little better at the game of academe, just from reading her posts.

The same thing goes for polly_mer, for the most part, even though there were times when we felt compelled to snark-challenge each other's value and belief systems. I owe a lot of my successful career navigation to polly_mer even though our experiences in the profession were vastly different.

As you know, the moderating here is very light. eigen and I have both said in the past that that's not what we'd prefer, but that it's clearly what the membership here wants. And we abide by that, and we're happy to revisit it if and when the community wants to do so.

Despite our laissez faire moderation policy, several posters have received notes and warnings about their posts at this point. I can't speak to the notes the others sent, but I think it's fair to say that any notes you may have received from me were not particularly harsh or inflammatory. I have every confidence that if polly received such a note, it would have been in kind.

If that was the last straw, that's too bad. But it's the same courtesy everyone else here gets, and those of you who've received warnings have done a fine job of sticking around and toeing the line. Hopefully she'll return sometime when she's feeling up to it again.

But not before I outpost her... ;)

Aside from that...

You don't need formal warnings to inhibit speech. This is becoming vividly clear in our Orwellian academic and home real life, as the generally understood-as-required aspiring to a value of *diversity* gives those charged with implementing diversity initiatives enormous control. Since they are power-hungry the idea they circulate is never that we have the amount of diversity we need and the appreciation of that diversity that we need; rather, that we never have enough of either. The result is the mania and break with reality we see everywhere.

The forum is a mixture of academics who (1) know each other in real life (2) don't (3) are concerned about people being able to find out who they are and (4) are not, or are less so. A former academic who has things to muse about, related to academia, can even be present. So I would expect the amount of self censorship varies from one poster to the next.

Hello all!

While I kind of wish that this romantic story was mine, it is not. Sadly, I am not a model. This is probably for the best, though, because otherwise I would probably have a cocaine addiction. So, you know, it all evens out.

But, someone told me about this and it inspired me to register and say hello.

My relationship with higher ed is a bit tumultuous right now — that is true. I'd like to leave my job, which is the same one I've had for 15 years. It would mean leaving academia entirely, probably, because who the hell is going to hire full-time/TT music professors right now? No one, that's who. But maybe that would also be OK.

I have a therapist who became a therapist after having worked for a long time in another field, and she said it took her about 8-10 years to actually make the career change. So I have a couple more years to think about it.

Anyway, hello and best wishes to everyone. I hope I've gotten wiser over the years since the regular Fora closed down. I guess we'll see?

VP

Thanks to all for your good wishes! I will try to re-find a place here. Maybe it will be different from how it was before. We can all grow and change, yes?

Nice to see you again Vox. We have all changed, I'm sure. And now there's no connection with CHE, these fora have a different feel to them. I suspect the numbers of participants are less too. Still, people find the discussions helpful sometimes.

Academia is under stress, times are getting worse for the hallowed halls, and I think we are all sadder than the old'n days of CHE.

I think you are really right about that. On top of that, for much of the population, we are no longer considered a priority in terms of funding (other than D1 Power 5 football/basketball), and in some cases, we are simply enemies.

But I also think that the entire population is sadder, in general.

On that sad note, welcome back Vox. Do you still have all those endless removable wallets?

How on earth academics could imagine they can start running courses like 'the problem of whiteness' and make a star out of a charlatan who claims that no racism is racism and not expect trouble is beyond me. We have been getting off easy considering the shit we have been stirring up. (ETA:) No doubt the concerns about COVID have been providing some cover for the weave of toxic idiocy over race and identity that have been taking over in education.

It's been about a month since smallcleanrat has posted.

I'm wondering if they're OK, or if they're just tied up with midterm/end-of-term stuff.

Hope all's well.

I recall them successfully finishing comps and I was under the impression and hoping they were taking some much deserved dial back of intensity in their life.

I think on and off about mystictechgal and wonder if anyone has heard from her.  It looks as though she was brought up 3 years ago in this thread, but I didn't see any related posts after that.  She was active in 2020 at least once.  I hope all is well there.

I have been off The Fora for a long time and am just catching up on favorite posters, posters whose stories I have found compelling or inspiring or moving, posters who made an impact one way or another.  Just before I logged in for the last time, I read all of SCR's posts in order from earliest to latest.  A couple of years later, having re-logged in after a long absence, I searched for her and again, read her posts in chronological order.  Her last posts were full of suicidal ideation and despair that seemed, to my ears, really serious.  She seemed incredibly isolated.

I read the entire "Forumites I'm Missing" thread in the hope someone would know her IRL and confirm that she's OK, and I see that the wonderful Mamselle (rip) asked if anyone had heard from SCR a little over a year ago, May 03, 2022, followed up by a reply the same day from Istiblennius, noting that SCR passed her oral exams and was perhaps taking some time off, plus an affirmation from Larimar that SCR was missed.  Nothing since.

I hope someone knows that she is OK? The news that she passed her orals is fantastic! One of her very last posts comments that passing her orals would give her much more freedom and independence, but that the goal seemed impossibly far away and unobtainable.  I couldn't be happier that she got there and hope that her silence just means that life has improved a whole lot.

Hello, latico.

Thanks for asking after me!

Like Parasaurolophus said, I'm still around these fora and I'm doing much better than when I wrote those earlier posts.
