Everything old is new again.
Monthly goals:
- Generate and give conference presentation.
- Submit contracted translation manuscript #2.
- Finish straggling book chapter.
- Start on the intro for translation project #3.
- Comment on an acquaintance's projected reply to a paper of mine.
Stretch:
- Open a new front (i.e. chapter) on the book project.
- Polish up a languishing paper and send it out.
- Start work on a new paper.
- Start work on a chapter contribution due in August.
Just one of those stretches would be fantastic. There's no way I could accomplish them all.
Today, I will do a bit more spot-checking for the translation project, start another pile of marking, and try to have a nap.
March goals:
- Make progress on paper #1 with colleagues - it would be great to get this off by the end of March
- Make progress on paper #2 with colleagues
- Make progress on paper #3 with colleague - R&R, ball is in colleague's court
- Make progress on book project #1
- Make progress on book project #2 with colleague
- Revise book chapter with colleague - due mid-March

Did those things, minus the nap, which I'll try to have now. It won't be long, but every bit helps when every day is a 3-5am kind of day.
More grading and prepping today, alas.
I have two weeks to the due date.
If I can keep this head of steam going I should be fine. Hoping to finish this week and then have a week to noodle and format.
This is like writing the dissertation all over again.

Did those. Not done yet, but I'm close to getting them out of the way.
Also convinced a friendly acquaintance to collaborate on a paper over the next year or so.
Probably just more grading and prep today. Hopefully I can start back on the proper research work tomorrow.

Toddler didn't sleep, so I was unable to do anything.
Power is out for a couple of days, so progress will be minimal.
March Goals- Write some chapters of my book manuscript
- Work on book chapter due in June with colleague
Same goals as February...ayiyi! I just got through any changes in the most recent edition of the last source I needed. Now I really need to write my book.
Other excitement: a book chapter I coauthored is published (I got the PDF today and the hard copy of the book comes tomorrow in the mail), my sabbatical manuscript is finally under review after sitting for 8 months with top tier journal I really hope will publish it eventually, and my other book chapter may be out at the end of the month too according to the editor! Lastly...I found out I am getting promoted to full!
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on March 04, 2024, 09:55:58 AMPower is out for a couple of days, so progress will be minimal.
Got ahead on my reading and got my slides preliminarily sorted before the computer died.
Hopefully I'll make a start on my conference talk during the commute.

Only got my prep done.
Feeling pretty ill today, so probably nothing.
I finally took some time to work on my book! I wrote about 1,200 words of a new chapter and add several hundred to the first one. I am happy with that progress and will keep plugging away!
Need to start my conference presentation today. Still sick, though.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on March 07, 2024, 09:22:09 AMNeed to start my conference presentation today. Still sick, though.
I wrote almost 2,000 words today on the book manuscript!
I've got a week to the due date. Mostly done but for the shouting. I'm burning my candle at both ends, plus I just received several new newspaper assignments. Gonna be a busy week.
I should keep working on the presentation.

Almost there on the book chapter. Looking forward to crossing that off the list next week.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on March 08, 2024, 01:51:39 PMI should keep working on the presentation.
I'm maybe 2/3 of the way done. I also dealt with a variety of odds and ends.
Have to catch up on my grading. Should also keep plugging away on the talk.
Also got a desk rejection back, so I should send that out again. This paper has been getting a lot of these, and they bug me, because they're desk rejections from supposedly generalist journals on the basis that the paper comes from my (perfectly respectable, but low-status these days) subfield. Makes for a tough nut to crack. (The last one suggested it might be a hoax, which is pretty weird, since it's a straightforward reply to and expansion of a real paper. And it's a pretty good one, too.)
Working with my capstone student from last year on a podium presentation for the end of the month.
Am learning to use DataWrapper - does a far better job of creating tables, charts, and maps than anything I've ever done in Excel. Upload your data, choose a presentation format (bar chart, line chart, pie chart, etc.) fiddle with titles, colors, and how you want it to look, and hit publish. The free version will only output a png format but you can just drag and drop into your Powerpoint file.

Five left to mark, talk pretty much ready to practice.
I'll finish my marking and tackle a referee report. Maybe something else, we'll see. Or a nap.

Submitted the report.
T minus 6 days and counting.
Some course prep to attend to, and then I guess I'll do a bit of translation checking, and start reading for a new referee report.

Managed a good bit of prep.
T minus 5 days and counting.
All the chapters articulated. 95% of the writing done. 8 of the chapters edited and proofed on initial run.
One chapter to finish.
120 works cited so far.
Will need to format still.
I'll have to try to record a lecture during the commute. Anything else is a bonus.
Quote from: Parasaurolophus on March 12, 2024, 08:53:32 AMI'll have to try to record a lecture during the commute. Anything else is a bonus.
Did that and checked a couple of translation pages.
Forgot my charging cable, so no work on the commute today. Or, rather, no more, since the laptop died.

Sent off the book chapter.
I'm waiting on other people for most of the remaining tasks, but there are some things I can do on my own to help move book project #2 and paper #2 along.
Just translation checking today. More would be nice, but we'll see. I suppose I should read for a referee report.
Got a submission back (again) because they apparently want no footnotes whatsoever--annoying, because one doesn't normally have to format until a thing is accepted. Sigh.
Also got back comments from referees for translation 1. Nothing major, though since we want to comb over it one more time that'll take some work. It's a beast of a document.
Fell asleep while doing a bit of both, then the hatchling woke up.
T Minus 1.
Doing final edits and citations.
Launch!
The manuscript is away.
Very nice acquisitions editor said they are now looking for readers, and my confidence cycles between celebrating my own brilliance and complete destitution at my ignorant dilettantism.
The waiting game begins.
I'll just float around in orbit for a while.
It was another horrifically early morning, and I'm rather tired and have a fair few errands to run. But I'm hoping to run through my talk once, and do a little translation checking.

Thank you, my friend. I stayed up all night and am exhausted. Just enough energy for game shows with the wife.
Did the talk, checked a bit, emailed, and read for the referee report.
First draft of manuscript completed. Now waiting on feedback from co-authors.
Gonna work on the translation checking, plus maybe course prep? I dunno.
My most recently accepted article was published today. It was given the 'editor's choice' heading, which means they've waived the paywall. So that's nice!

Course prep and translation checking today.

Did some of that. Everybody but me is very sick today, so I've not had much time.
More of the same today.
Edit: Just adding that the article published last week as a free 'editors' choice' piece is already one of the five most-viewed in the journal. The others are from years and decades ago. :)
I am writing a reply to a journal article on argumentation. I strongly oppose it.
Never wrote a REPLY before. So much easier than writing an original paper.

Wow, congratulations!
I have been absent on here because of two back-to-back out of state trips. Thus, no book manuscript writing got done (shocker). However, I did get named a research fellow for an organization last week which is cool. I got the proof for a forthcoming chapter. Also, my sabbatical manuscript that has been under review for almost 9 months shows the status of "awaiting final decision" and I sure as heck hope it is a R&R and not a reject!

For my part, today I got a rejection for a paper that started life as a reply piece. It's hard to un-reply it, because there's virtually no other literature on this subject. Even so... Anyway, R1 says I should cut it down and send it to the original journal as a reply piece. That was, of course, the first place it went, where it was rejected for not going into the weeds of some phenomenon at full paper length (which the present paper now does). Damned if you do, and damned if you don't .
I swear it's harder to publish a reply than a full-length paper. Every time I try, I get dinged for criteria appropriate for a full paper but not a reply, and then the paper is stuck trying to expand its scope enough so that it doesn't look like a reply any more.
Anyway. I'll send it to one last reply-friendly journal today (after that, I'll have to do some rewriting), and then work on lecture prep.
Didn't have much time, but made a start, at least.

I would think that writing a reply is easier to publish. Shorter and narrow focus. I never wrote one before because I thought they would be unread. Mine is very critical because the author's arguments are very bad, a graduate student. Are replies sent out for review? Maybe you should read other journals. It is easy, I bet, to publish a positive supportive reply which validates the editor's decision and values the article. Writing a whole article is ambitious, daunting to me.

The challenge is that most journals only accept replies to work published in their own pages, so you have basically one chance to publish it--and the original author is usually one of the referees, and many don't care for criticism. Once you fail to publish in the original journal, you have to find a way of justifying the reply's publication elsewhere. Usually that means expanding it into a full-length paper. That's fine, but harder to do, especially when it comes to narrow topics that only have one or two things published on them; the end result still looks like a reply, so gets desk-rejected a lot.
