Are other universities begging for donations to support purchase of PPE, thermometers, etc?

From The Chronicle of Higher Ed:

https://www.chronicle.com/article/135-for-a-Plexiglass-Shield-/248969?cid=wcontentlist_hp_latest

QuoteA $65 donation, the fund-raising page says, will pay for one "student protection kit," including a thermometer, face masks, and sanitizing supplies. A plexiglass shield will cost $135, while a semester's worth of lab masks and personal protective equipment for one student runs $532. The highest amount the site suggests, $3,000, would buy 20 tests for Covid-19.

Purdue faculty and staff have been asked to donate.

The Fundraising Page.  539 donors have given $120k so far.

QuoteWe ask for your support to ensure we are equipped to handle in-person classes when students return.

Hey.  Good for them.  I'll probably donate.  I donated to my uni's fund for students who needed aid when the deity-damned virus hit.  This is what we should all be doing.

If this was specifically for things like labs for med students; i.e. things that require students to be there in person, rather than just the "damn the torpedos, full speed ahead" opening to keep all the money coming in, then I'd have some sympathy. As it is, it's just wishful thinking that bringing all of the students on campus can be done without an outbreak with ANY sort of precautions.
It takes so little to be above average.

Warning: Purdue's president is a Republican.  Everyone, be aware of that fact before calibrating your opinions on this thread.

Yet somehow he seems to be more or less competent.

I guess that just proves there's an exception to every rule, huh?  ;)

Will you guys get a room?
If in this life only we had hope of Christ, we would be the most pathetic of them all.  But now is Christ raised from the dead, the first of those who slept.  First Christ, then afterward those who belong to Christ when he comes.

I will NOT share a room with a hardcore conservative, no matter how well educated, thank you very much!

Harrumph!

I will have you to know that my relationship to writingprof is strictly professional and any implication otherwise is slander!  Slander, I tell you!  And I fully expect a bromance bromide for the bother!!

Fair enough....calling all Chem/biochem/pharma folks to offer suggestions for a bromance bromide for WR and WP....either manually compounded, or off-the-shelf is fine.

I expect we'll be getting on of these requests soon. Our sensitive administrators have recently been making an effort to help temporary faculty  feel like part of the community.

Not being a Purdue alumni or live in Indiana, I'd be far more inclined to donate to almost any other university, rather than to a state flagship R1.

It's a good idea to donate what we can where we can.

Donate somewhere.

I sent money to the Too Broke to Go Home Fund (not its real name) at my alma mater in addition to the Needed a Fifth Year (also not its real name) fund to which I always donate.

Matt Reed at IHE summarized well my thought on Purdue's fundraising efforts.
