Heavy rains since Monday evening.  I don't know how many inches we've gotten.  I do know that I've heard two straight nights of thunder, with more this morning.  Roads are flooding.  Schools, which did not close for the eclipse, are opening late.  I'm afraid this is going to hurt a collaboration we had scheduled with the public schools for today.

We had a hot day here in the metro Baltimore/DC area:

I stayed inside the library most of the day.

Five inches of rain at our house, after storms off and on all weekend. More heavy weather (storms and heavy rain) predicted for Thursday night. Creeks and rivers are approaching/above flood stage all over the region; the Mississippi was full of logs, trees, and debris when I crossed this morning.

No serious flooding here, but in some places out in the county roads have been temporarily impassable.  One staff member called off yesterday because the roads were so bad where she lived.

It was very bright earlier this morning.  Now it's clouding over.  We're supposed to have another long siege of rainy weather start in a couple of days.  That could cause some problems.

The bottom dropped out on me this morning as I was walking to work.  If it had started only 20 minutes later I'd have made it to work safely.  Twenty minutes earlier and I'd have known to drive instead.  As it is, my legs and feet are pretty well soaked.  I'm just glad I made it okay through the thunder and lightning, which I would not have chanced if I'd known it was that imminent.

Looks like pretty much nothing but rain, rain, and more rain in the extended forecast.  Coming on top of everything we've already had, I'm afraid we're going to be looking at a real problem for the local economy, and possibly some flooding in places.

Rain part of the morning and it's now stopped.

After more heavy rain Sunday night and last night, the air feels like a damp sponge.  More heavy storms to come tomorrow night, after heading to the upper 80s today and tomorrow.

Thankfully most of our predicted rains in recent days have failed to materialize.  Full, brutal summer heat and humidity have now set in.  They're running earlier this year.  I've had to turn on my home air conditioner a full week earlier than ever before.  It's two weeks before it used to be necessary a decade or so ago.

Rain! It started overnight and has gone through the day.

Yesterday was a beautiful summer day.  Today looks like a repeat.

At least eight people were killed in our state by tornadoes over the weekend.  The storms were not near where I lived, but I had been there just over a week before they struck.  Wondering how some colleagues in the area are doing.  Several of the area's libraries have been closed.

Beautiful pre-summer weather here this week--not too hot, and not at all humid, which is unusual for the last week of May in central Illinois!

Mostly dreary and cloudy here, which has at least had a moderating effect on temperatures.

I learned that one of our librarian colleagues in the storm-hit part of the state was preoccupied during the tornadoes.  She was giving birth!  Mother and baby are well, and apparently the family home was okay.

Storms last night.  We very nearly lost power.  I've never seen the lights flicker so much.  It never quite went down.  Others that I know did lose it for a couple of hours.  Apparently some were still without power this morning.  One house very close to mine had a generator running.  I've never known them to be without power when my house wasn't down as well.  I didn't see any fallen lines anywhere.  Everybody else on the street seemed to have lights.

The sky was almost clear first thing this morning.  Then yet another front rolled in.  We had some heavy rain a little while ago.  Not sure what's going on at the moment.  Apparently we have a chance of storms through at least tomorrow.

We have a severe thunderstorm watch for the metro DC area until 9 pm tonight.
Clean up continues after tornadoes passed through the area last night.
