Hindawi was in the business, inter alia, of providing an outlet for all the Middle Eastern and South Asian scholars who were required to publish a lot of peer-reveiewed papers without having the resources do the research that usually goes into a peer reveiewed research paper.

That part of the business was pretty evident to me in that some of the journals are in my scholarly discipline. Was Wiley unaware of that when they bought Hindawi a couple years ago, and only discovered the rot getting complaints about fraudulent articles? Or were they aware and decided to catch-and-kill this company that was bringing disrepute to their industry?

I'm glad that publishers have gotten more serious about cleaning up the dregs in larger numbers. The WSJ article makes it sound only like the very dregs, completely made up or copied articles. They are not catching the papers with fudged figures, elided data that don't support the conclusion, or conclusions tht are not supported by the data.

This discussion is to me, bizarre. Only a handful of campuses had spaces that prevented students from getting services. And I'm sorry, having police with snipers (IU and OSU) is an amazing overreach even if no heads were bashed. If the Storm Front students were on the quad the cops should do nothing.

And marshwiggle, the name calling in the US would almost certainly be protected free speech in this instance.

After I got done with grading and commencement last week, I finished a manuscript review yesterday, and am trying to wrap up conference proposal reviews today. I feel nervous about finishing my chapter due at the end of the month but my coauthor promised to work on it this week. I had a book chapter which got published on Monday (well, the book came out) so that is exciting.

Frankly, I had the same thought.

And we shouldn't demonize the police for enforcing the law, even if they have to use force.  If anyone----students, professors, or anyone----is given a lawful order, they have to obey.  If they do not, the police are allowed to use proportional force to enforce the law.  I've watched the footage.  These are not cops walloping students with clubs as they did during the Chicago Democratic Convention in '68 or whatever.  These are wrestling matches and zip-ties and students (and the odd professor) being led from campus.

I acknowledge peoples' right to peacefully protest----but then one has to accept the consequences, which is part of the protest.

Ask ourselves: if these were registered students who were members of Storm Front peacefully occupying a campus but refusing to leave after lawfully ordered to, what would we have the cops do?

As for the ablation consult, thanks! It sounds like he is a good candidate for it because of the type and timing of arrhythmia (occasional atrial fibrillation that the heart can self-regulate back to normal rhythm).  Holding off might mean that the arrhythmia becomes more frequent and then the heart cannot fix it.  Early on has good outcomes.  So he is scheduled for next Tues! Should take 2-4 hrs and then he will have to hang around the hospital for 4-5 hours (this is a lot less than it says online, so I am skeptical) because they go in through the femoral artery and want to make sure there aren't bleeding issues and so forth after.  They shouldn't need to admit him unless there are issues, but it might depend on procedure timing (we won't know til Fri or Mon).  Recovery is very quick.  Doc said some people go back to work the same day! Of course, after the heart attack that doc said that some people go back to work the same day.  Who knows.  Husband will take 1-2 days off but no major restrictions, certainly nothing compared to the open heart stuff.  The gist is to go in with probes, see where there are electrical issues happening that prevent blood from moving normally between chambers, and either use cryo or heat to stop those particular things from firing.  I don't think doc said which type.

That's a good idea about bird identification.  Sometimes I see folks posting them on Nextdoor or Facebook, too.  And I'm sorry to hear about your continued CPAP ordering stuff.  I don't know how often they think people need to reorder equipment! Certainly not as often as they tend to call.  And good luck getting better info on your lung scan.  We often have trouble getting any kind of explanation.  And these are usually the same doctors who grumble about patients using WebMD to get information.  I really miss my PA (from PA!) who would at least have one of the nursing staff call to explain or set up time to talk with her.  I'm glad that the electrophysiologist who will do the ablation has great reviews, especially for taking time to answer patient questions satisfactorily.

Thanks for the good thoughts, all.  It does help!  And yesterday I planted geraniums and sat out my snake plants on the little patio wall we built last summer, which also helped my mood. I'll do some more container planting today--those will be easy enough for ALHS to water and care for while I'm off my feet.

Langue doc, you're absolutely right: the doc/nurse needs to contact you with a plain-English version of your tests, esp. something like a CAT. When I got my CPAP, the provider told me, "The supplier will call you every. Single. Day. until you order supplies. Save yourself the headache and block their number immediately. When you need something, you can call them yourself."

I'm at war with the CPAP supplier. I had to block them from my cell phone because they would call/text every.single.day, sometimes more than once to remind me to reorder supplies, which only the doctor can do. When the doctor did reorder the supplies, they called me when I couldn't take the call in private and hence didn't want to announce my date of birth--it's the same address, same insurance, same everything--the representative got into a huff and hung up. Now I have to call the insurance to see if I am required to give them my date of birth so that they can continue sending the refills ordered by my doctor. I'm not too happy with the CPAP doctor either as I had a lung CatScan, but no information whatsoever about the results other than the medical jargon posted on my patient portal and a recommendation to repeat the scan after three months. I could ask for clarification through the portal, but I think it's the prescribing doctor's responsibility to get back to the patient and explain the findings in plain English.
