We've got a copy of "Tall Tales & Legends: the Complete Series" (1985) on DVD at the library. It was one of Shelley Duval's shows for kids.

Here's an article from WTOP Radio detailing his long career.

Look on YouTube for David Letterman's Top 10: Things that sound really cool when said by James Earl Jones.

A Shakespearean actor early in his career! I'd recognize his voice anywhere, except in Star Wars: I'm probably the only person in the world in that position. I know him best from The Hunt for Red October.

Glad he lived so long.
That's not even wrong!

Maggie Smith, one of my favorite actors.
QuoteMaggie Smith, Grande Dame of Stage and Screen, Dies at 89
She earned an extraordinary array of awards, from Oscars to Emmys to a Tony, but she could still go almost everywhere unrecognized. Then came "Downton Abbey."

The BBC obit.

Watch her performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, A Room with a View, David Copperfield, The First Wives Club, The Secret Garden, and others listed in the obits.

Besides "Harry Potter" and "Downton Abbey," I remember Dame Maggie Smith in both "Sister Act" movies, and she had a small role in "Clash of the Titans" (1981). I remember watching "The Secret Garden" on Kanopy when it was available.

I didn't see these but remember her in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" movies.

The victims of Hurricane Helene.

(I have just heard today from some colleagues and friends in the NC mountains after days of anxious, fearful wondering. Several reminded me and others that there are those who will never be able to reassure loved ones that they still exist. It's a sobering reminder of mortality and the capriciousness of nature.)

John Amos, star of the landmark TV series "Good Times" and "Roots" (1977)
Later in his career, Mr. Amos had recurring guest roles in several TV shows.
