Quote from: Wahoo Redux on May 09, 2024, 07:13:22 AMIHE: UC Berkeley Investigates Pro-Palestinian Dinner Protest Fracas

QuoteThe Council on American-Islamic Relations shared on X a video showing Fisk coming up behind Afaneh, grabbing the phone in her hand from which she was reading the speech, putting her arm around Afaneh's shoulder and saying, "Leave, this is not your house, it is my house." Chemerinksy also says "Please leave our house." Fisk then tries to pull Afaneh's microphone out of her hands. Afaneh says UC is funding weapons manufacturers and Fisk, relinquishing the mic, says "I have nothing to do with what the UC does."

So you can invade my house but I'm the one being dragged up to see what transgressions I have committed?

In a state with stand your ground laws, the response could well have involved a load of buckshot with the invader on the receiving end.  But in Berkley??????  It seems not.

Truly we are living in cloud cuckoo land.

The charges of "Islamophobia" are simply hysterical.

The professor should have simply called the police, but I guess anger took over.

Well, it was a private party.
QuoteChemerinksy, a free speech scholar, has written that the presidents of the third-year law school class had asked him and Fisk to have graduating law students over for dinner last month.

The monumental ingratitude of insulting your hosts is shocking.

A person with any class and integrity would simply and politely decline the invitation.

Yet more evidence of why I should never be made Lord-God-King of the universe, alas.

I confess I too would be most interested to learn what kind of school has three dozen chaplains, and what, ahem, is the scope of religious affiliation held by this assemblage?

Quote from: Parasaurolophus on May 09, 2024, 10:39:23 AMMore T1 today; I'd like to manage a large chunk. Maybe I'll start on something else, too. We'll see.

Did a large chunk plus about 600 new words for my straggling book chapter of a couple months ago.

Quote from: fishbrains on May 08, 2024, 02:33:46 PMIf I were Lord-God-King of the universe, all schools at any level receiving any federal funding would be required to have the same summer break, fall break, winter break, and spring break, so family members can take vacations at the same time.

This is what happens in English primary and secondary schools. It means that everyone knows when families can go on vacation, and prices are raised accordingly. Which means that families take their kids out of school during term-time, so they can actually afford to go to the Lake District or on that quick jaunt to Paris. So ... not a good strategy after all.

I've heard of that issue in Britain.

In our town, it's apparently pretty common for families to treat the final week or so of K-12 school as optional at most.  I don't recall that ever happening when I was growing up.  We were in school up to the end, of course, since our mother was a teacher, but the non-teacher's-kid students were there too.

Quote from: Hibush on May 08, 2024, 02:53:08 PMThe spirituality office sends out a long list of religious holidays in case we want to be prepared. I think most faculty just see that the list is long and trying to schedule around them is futile.

Your institution has a "spirituality office?"  The faculty's attitude to their no doubt well-meaning list of religious holidays is probably pretty typical of the response to a lot of what these sorts of offices put out.

The full name would reinforce your impression. The name used to have the word "religion" in it. Perhaps in the distant past that was the full name. There is a staff of about three dozen chaplains who have rather conventional chaplain responsibilities. They report to the Dean of Students.

Three dozen chaplains!  Must be a large institution.  We had only one at Alma Mater.  It was a church-supported SLAC, so he was the official chaplain.  Quite a young family man at that time.  There was lots of in-house speaking and musical talent among faculty and students for the required weekly chapel services and daily optional noonday meetings.  The chaplain was active on campus, but I don't recall him addressing assemblies that often.

Quote from: jimbogumbo on May 09, 2024, 01:46:49 PMI assumed they meant (rightly, in my opinion) it would be problematic for a political appointee to do this merely because someone complains. For example, University of Florida loses non-profit status because random Dem congressperson complains to WH.

There are relevant measures within the framework of administrative law to deal with misuse of executive power. Non for profit status is given by administrative action and should be taken also. The idea that the IRS will need to go to court to strip 501(c)(3) status is ludicrous. I guess the ACLU director wants the IRS to spend more time and money to strip the status from those who abuse it.

@AJ_Katz, So sorry; I just finished posting final grades and came up for air (and to browse the fora).

Assests are great full-length hose. For knee-high hose, I've worn L'eggs Everyday (they come in a pink box) for decades. I'm usually able to wash and wear them many, many times over before they need to be replaced. Sadly, they are getting harder to find in stores, but Wal-Mart and Target near me have them on occasion. I've also found them on Amazon sometimes.
