This will be a tough month on my end, with various things impacting my ability to do stuff. So the goals are somewhat reduced:
- Finish August R&R
- Finish August Chapter
- Make last tweaks to Sample Chapters for Publisher
- Make a real start on Collaboration 3, which is due in a few months
Stretch:
- Write one new Book Section
Today, however, it's all editorial work.
Yeah, this month I'm going to need to start doing some substantial course prep. But here are my primary goals:
-Finish revisions of publeme 1 and submit
-Do that final review
-Make progress on the CS AI project
-Revise publeme 2 and submit (may go into September)
This is a stretch. But doable, I think. The first two will almost definitely happen. The third will probably happen too, if my collaborators continue to be as excellent as they were during the first stage of the project. The last may not happen this summer. Oh, well.
Main aims:
1. Get the paper down a couple more pages, fit in the rest of the manuscript comparisons somehow, and reduce the notes another page.
2. A few more slides, do all the fact-checking for dates, etc., and finalize the flow, maybe get rid of a few more slides in the process.
3. A few more N/P things to do, then bow out for real once the transfer actually goes through.
Today:
For no. 1, I did a quick pass on the notes, glanced at the MS comparisons, and sighed.
For no. 2, I did more slides, and found more documents for the book chapter they will feed to.
For no. 3., I thought about next steps, but didn't do anything.

Well, I did a bunch. It's not done, but it's almost done.
Happy August!
Hopefully Realistic Goals
- Finish R&R due 8/20
- Finish manuscript due 9/1
- Major practitioner newsletter asked us to make our article that just came out into a 2,000 word lay language article before the end of August = huge audience opportunity for our research implications!
- Get my new research assistant (masters student) and doctoral student volunteer set up to start the big journal scanning project
- Draft sabbatical application for department chair to preview before deadline
Editorial stuff plus August chapter today.
1. Paper down another full page. MS comparisons to go.
2. Two more good slides done. A few more to do, then edits.
3. Wimped out. Later. Tomorrow. Whatever...
A 5.30 student and 7.30 folk dance online to go.
M.
More of the same today.
1. More editing work and fact-checking on article. No longer, but a few more items clearer, and a bit more info added. More to do.
2. Starting work on PPt now.
3. No more N/P stuff for today; maybe tomorrow.
M.
I spent the last three days grading, but once I submitted final summer grades today, I got back into the groove. I am reading additional articles for the manuscript due 9/1 with my subfield colleague right now.
More of the same today, with more emphasis on the August Chapter, which needs much more doing.

Done for the day. Managed about 700 not-so-greatwords, which is a good start.
More work on 1 and 2, nothing on 3, but a good student's lesson and more prep for tomorrow to do upcoming.
M.
Gonna try to finish the editorial stuff today, then we'll see about the chapter.

Today, I drafted my sabbatical application and sent it to my department head to review even though it is not due until November. I also worked on revisions for the manuscript due 8/20 and finished up some work on the manuscript due 9/1 and sent it back to my coauthor.

Did it, and spotty internet resulted in a combination of work on setting up my fall courses, working on August chapter, and starting the research for a new book section.
Maybe some August Chapter or R&R today.

No kidding!
Trying again today.
I just got back from vacation, so I'm feeling reinvigorated and ready to dive into some research. However, the semester starts in a couple of weeks and so non-research obligations will start eating into my time soon. With that said, here are my ongoing goals, which I plan to make progress on in August:
- Finalize paper #1 with colleagues and submit to journal
- Make progress on paper #2 with colleague
- Make progress on paper #3 with colleague
- Start outlining invited book chapter
- Finish teaching case with colleague
- Begin outlining book proposal based on ongoing research project and/or think about other new research projects to move forward with
- Get my new research assistant to work on ongoing data collection project
I didn't ask for it, but August Chapter became September Chapter, so now everything seems doable!
Today, I'll work on August R&R. And finish my editorial crap.

I guess I'm pretty much done for the day already. I dealt with some things and am now coming up against another big thing that needs me to work myself up to it. I might come back to it today, I dunno. We'll see.
There are only two big things left to fix up, though. It seems doable!
Editing finished, and sent in.
More slides done, and I've made a list of what's left in the deck.
I coooo--ouullll--dd do some work on the article, now....
Hmm...

Today the story aired that included my interview about my research! It is pretty exhilarating to have such a platform to share work relevant to current issues! Now that I had my five seconds of fame, it is back to preparing Fall courses.

Sorry to say, I'm in the "grumpy spot" with both the PowerPoint project--which got balky this AM, refused to save three slides I'd spent 1.5 hrs on, and made me re-do them all in a different file so as not to lose my train of thought--and the article, which is at the Heartbreak Hill point that usually needs some kind of serious demand on the other side of the river (sorry, mixed geographic metaphors) to get me over the hump.
Maturity, prayer, and the right kind of breakfast cereal will have to prevail.
Still no forward movement on the N/P bank transfer, after 8 months.
Time for some serious desktop tap-dancing.
Students doing fine.

My shells are done, apart from plugging the problems into the quizzes. But the hatchling doesn't want to sleep for more than thirty minutes at a time, so that put the kibosh on any other accomplishments.
Meeting with a student shortly, then I'll try to get either some R&Ring done, or some sample chapter revision.

It may not be much but I scheduled my first research team meeting with the students who will be supporting my big project. I'm not satisfied, but I did a bit. It's hard to do the serious overhauling I need to do in the tiny chunks of time the hatchling is leaving me now that he's on a shorter nap schedule. Sigh.
More bits done. Figured out a workaround for the Ppts for now; kept the article within its page limit while fixing more things.
Much more to do!

Spent a good chunk of today working on publeme 1. I'm integrating comments that a thoughtful reviewer made a couple of years ago during the last round of rejections, as a sort of FU to the lousy reviewer who didn't bother even looking at Figure 1. Reviewer 2 read the paper carefully and gave good comments. But it's so hard to lever open my exquisitely tightly constructed shell of an elegant introduction to jam in the new topic.

Managed to do a bit. I really only have one tricky thing left to fix, but it's gonna take a decent bit of mental energy to figure out. And I, meanwhile, just had a total brainfart and couldn't remember how to calculate the midpoint between two natural numbers. =/
So... I'm clearly not gonna fix it in the next half hour!

Yesterday on the R&R due 8/20, one co-author got a lot of revisions done so I went in and worked on it. The other co-author promised to work on this early next week, so we will be done soon! I also started cutting down the manuscript for the "lay language" piece that needs to get done this coming week too. The graduate research assistant I had on this grant was in town for hu's doctoral residency week last week and I took hu to lunch/met in person for the first time! I also have two of my classes ready for Fall. This week I need to get everything else ready for Fall and anticipate getting the manuscript due 9/1 back from my co-author to work on as well.
Despite the computer trouble, I managed to get a paper cut down and sent to a conference (today was the deadline).
I'm impressed!
I got tiny bits done yesterday, today's time frame for more seems to be closing in, might have to be more bits tomorrow.
Other work did get done, so that's to the good, though...
M.
I'll try to work on the R&R today.
I got the manuscript due 9/1 back from my colleague over the weekend, so I need to get my part done. It will not be until next week unfortunately. I was really unhappy today when our book chapter editor told us our chapter is perfect, and now needs to be cut down 2,500+ words! After three submissions and all praise, we never were given a word count until after the fact. Get this: the chapter must be cut down and resubmitted by THIS FRIDAY. UGH. I cut down 1,000 words and sent it to one of the coauthors, who is also an editor on this book. Hu claimed there was flexibility when the chapter content is important, but hu is not allowed to be "our editor" since hu is an author on this chapter. I also have the manuscript revision due Friday and the lay language newsletter piece adapted from my recent publication due next week. I cannot wait until August is over!
That's truly stressful.
Sorry to hear about all the collisions of good intentions with mis/no information.
Not nice, not fair, yuk.
As one might have noticed on the venting thread, my good intentions were swallowed up by computer issues....politely put.
I did at least find a way to stop the pictures from being "left out" for "my benefit" or "my safety" or whatever.
I hate nannying software.

Pretty good progress today. I'm figuring out this last hard thing to deal with.
We got it cut down 1,700 words and submitted it last night. The editor told the managing editor it can be final at 800 words over. Whew. I need to get back to the other manuscript due Friday, but I still do not have one of my courses ready for the semester so I have to prioritize that first. Today I am meeting with various amazing people on campus who are giving my student research assistant access to digitization equipment for my major long-term project.
All good thoughts!!!

More R&R today, if and when time allows.
More tiny bits done. Teaching soon.

Managed some. I imagine I'll manage none tomorrow.
I may transcribe/translate a buncha Latin pages I keep returning to in bits and pieces, just to sped the cross-referencing along when I get to the footnotes.
I have no students today, so it's a good "long-muscles" task to address for the day.
More Ppt work, and a tiny bit of tweaking on my student's choir booklet will function as side veggies to flavor the day, I think.
That will do it for me.
M.
Yesterday I finished my class preparation, so this morning I cranked out the revisions for the manuscript due Friday. I am waiting on approval from one of the coauthors to submit, and it can get in a few days early! Now I am furiously trying to cut down my article for the "lay language" newsletter. I never heard from any coauthors on their help, so I am trying to do this myself. If I can get this done, I can focus next week solely on the manuscript due 9/1.
I doubt I'll have any time today, but if I do then it's the R&R, which is nearly done.

I also outlined the invited book chapter, although I don't want to go too far since I haven't heard from the editor to confirm the timeline.

Yes, although I'm not too upset since it allowed me to move right on to the next journal without making major revisions (just a quick edit with fresh eyes). I also looked at the reviews from rejection #2 and they are not too devastating - certainly nothing fatal to the piece - and so I'm optimistic that I'll be able to get it back out in September.

Done and done. It took some courage to submit both, but I did it!
The revised paper is well over the word limit, which sounds relatively strict, but there's no way around that, given what the referees were demanding.
I didn't get nearly as much writing done this summer as I had hoped. I am feeling a bit stunted in my career and scholarship does not have the same zest it used to when I was hoping for job interviews. Then I got a brand new class to develop with mostly brand new material.
Burnout and a little depression combined with pressing responsibilities. I am soldiering very slowly through a revise-and-resubmit article...but the book project is chaos and has been shelved for a bit.
Any tips on reinvigorating or retooling my research attitude?
Two thiugyts:
1) I have a couple friends interested in the topics I work on with whom I have an "accountability pact." In addition to this thread, which is helpful, I both email them updates, and do a .pdf of the article or Ppt under construction du moment, that I forward as an "earnest" at times as well.
I just did that on Tuesday, when it seemed like my 2 current projects were coming back-pattingly closer to being done, and wanted some "oomph" to get them closer to being done.
I don't have plans to teach classes in the fall, but my private students and editing clients will come thronging back, so I, also, have this window that will close soon, and I'd like it to close with me and the written work on the "Shiny new pubs" side, vs. the "undone-joeys-still-in-the-pouch" side of that wall.
2) I also pay an editorial colleague with strong interest in my topics to be a collegial consultant/supervisor. We have a Zoom call every 2 months and I do a screen-sharing run-down on my work and its current status. Takes an hour of time, for which I pay his going rate. We've worked on and off together over the years, which has kept my interest and focus alive when those were abating.
This was an idea I got from my M.A. program, as heard in a couple of Expressive therapies classes, in which it's common to need added supervisory oversight to that inbuilt within the reportage system in hospitals and other institutions where E.T.s often work.
The emotional strength of the countertransference the arts bring up can be strong, and responsible practitioners recognize their need for absorptive help in 'wicking it off,' along with the inherent frustrations of the job itself.
I saw the idea of extra support as useful in my own situation as an independent scholar and continue to use it to help sustain my writing.
Just if it's useful.

Any tips on reinvigorating or retooling my research attitude?
Take a planned break, and when you return start on something completely different from your usual stuff (like, work up an idea you had about something way outside your usual stomping grounds)?

2) I also pay an editorial colleague with strong interest in my topics to be a collegial consultant/supervisor. We have a Zoom call every 2 months and I do a screen-sharing run-down on my work and its current status. Takes an hour of time, for which I pay his going rate. We've worked on and off together over the years, which has kept my interest and focus alive when those were abating.
That sounds like a great idea in general!
For me today, I'm taking a break from the other August goals I clearly won't accomplish, and reading a new paper to which I'm thinking I'll write a quick reply piece.
I wanted to finish the third book chapter in August but it looks like it will end in the first week of September.
If I continue in this pace I will be done with the book by the end of 2021
Just wanting to chime in here to hold myself accountable to my schedule.
I taught an intensive summer course until mid August, so I'm starting my research goals from mid August through September.
August/September goals:
1. Draft new article based in part on a course previously taught.
2. Draft conference paper (preliminary research and notes almost complete).
3. Revise as much of book chapter as possible.
4. Finish and submit R and R on journal article.
So far, draft almost complete for 1, completed minimal work on 2, and haven't started on 3. Just heard from the journal from 4 this week.
Got three more slides done and more clean-up of others.
Article next, student at 6:30, otters after that.

Well, I did a bit of it. I'll do more tomorrow.
Today I'll finish reading that thing.
I've secured a five-month extension on delivery of the book, so all is well! A one-year turnaround was totally feasible when I started the project, before we knew we had a hatchling coming. Now, it would have been incredibly difficult to honour.
I reviewed one article and submitted the review yesterday, and just reviewed a second one today and submitted that review. I have one left but it is not due until the end of September so I am not going to rush through it right now. I also drafted the "letter from the editor" for the forthcoming journal issue. This is the first time I am in charge of article order and writing this letter, which is exciting.
This weekend, I have to read through a 40+ page paper for correct usage of commas, agreement of subjects and verbs, existence of antecedents for pronouns, and other similar grammatical issues. As far as we can tell, there are no substantive issues left. The grammatical issues are few and far between, but not nonexistent. Frankly, no one is going to notice or care (and my coauthors don't), but for some reason I insist on doing this.

I'm glad you do, for one.
Glaring, avoidable grammatical errors in published work of any kind hurts all our eyes.
I'm reading a 1940s history book with my pencil out. By p. 10, I had to insert an "a" where it had been omitted: the sentence was ludicrous without it.
Whatever the topic, good grammar is essential in communicating it well.

Getting started is the hardest part. Beyond that, my advice is to try to write every day (even if just for a few minutes). Post a goal or two the Sept. research thread as well to give you something to work towards.
Yesterday and today are for teaching and meetings. Tomorrow is the first research team meeting on my big project with the students collaborating with me. I am really excited about that! I am also on a virtual editor panel tomorrow.

Finalize paper #1 with colleagues and submit to journalMake progress on paper #2 with colleagueMake progress on paper #3 with colleagueStart outlining invited book chapterFinish teaching case with colleague- Begin outlining book proposal based on ongoing research project and/or think about other new research projects to move forward with
Get my new research assistant to work on ongoing data collection projectGet paper #4 (desk rejected) back under review- Get paper #5 (rejected, with reviews) back under review
My RA has been put to work and I've made some marginal progress on paper #3. Teaching and beginning of the semester responsibilities have dominated my time this month (as well as a vacation in early August), but looking forward to a productive September.
Three more slides done. Just a few more to go.
Because all my students showed up wanting lessons this week after all, my 'week off to write' is being translated to next week, which I always given them off anyway for the week their schools are starting.
Article still needs more attention.
Pas a pas.....

- Make last tweaks to Sample Chapters for Publisher
[/s]
- Make a real start on Collaboration 3, which is due in a few months
Stretch:
- Write one new Book Section
Not much by way of accomplishments, but it's enough. I did a small pile of editorial work and other stuff, too, and the August Chapter and book both got extensions, so!
Yea!
See you on the September thread!
