Research & Scholarship / Re: Academic Press Contract Of...
Last post by Ruralguy - December 18, 2024, 07:24:11 AM
As far as I know, my publisher and most others pretty much have non-negotiable contracts. Maybe if you break out a lawyer they'd budge minutely, but it would be a pretty small budge, and definitely wouldn't pay for the lawyer (or an agent). I get 10% on hard copies, and 5% on electronic. All percentages are based on the actual price the purchaser paid, including all discounts.

Lets just say that if you break 1000 copies sold during the first few years of life of the book, you have an academic barn burner.  Or, you luck out, and the amount of copies sold per year goes *up* for some reason.

And subvention more or less means the publisher fully expects to not sell anything.

I should add that whatever policy there is should make sense for the available space.

If the school is constantly scrambling to find faculty and staff space, expect the policy to be strict and strictly enforced. If every building always has 5-10 empty offices, then such a policy is probably ridiculous and based on old inventory of available space for faculty.

In other words, don't fight against a policy that makes sense, but do fight against one that is sort of dumb.

We are only expected to give up offices *if* the department is approved for a replacement, and we actually hire one, and also only if its 1 year. I had to do it for my 1st 2 sabbaticals, though they found an alternate space for me, and did not have to do it for my third. I don't know about my fourth.

General Discussion / Re: 2024 Elections Thread

Quote from: dismalist on December 16, 2024, 06:34:47 PMIt's rational for voters to be ignorant. It's expensive to become expert on the issues, and one's vote makes no difference to the out come of the election. Therefore, get cheap information, which means bad information.

From the point of view of suppliers, the customers do not want their pre-conceived notions contradicted, so don't contradict them!

We can lament this or accept this, but my objection to the discussion is the assumption that any of this is asymmetric. The rationally ignorant voter will be found on both the left and the right. Welcome to the club!

If you don't see the difference between fox and the more left leaning cable news outlets you are not looking too hard.

They are all bad, but that doesn't mean they are all equally so.

Dr. Mode,
Hey i know this is the worst time for something like this but i lost cell phone service due to not paying my bill, and I cannot log into canvas because I only have my two factor code that gets sent to text. Do you have any possible pointers I just figured this out 15 minutes ago I forgot my service was getting shut off today.
Stu

I gave him our IT service's help line info and they gave him a workaround. I knew it could be done, but wasn't sure how. I found out that students can use a web-app and their school email to get their 2FA codes instead of their phone. And he got his work turned in before the dropbox closed.

Congratulations on being able to help salvage the student's assignment in the midst of this crisis.  Don't know whether this student's service being shut off was due to carelessness or inability to cover bills, but there are apparently many struggling students who have trouble with the latter.

General Academic Discussion / Re: Raises for Promotion - Ave...

We don't get a bump with tenure or promotion at all, but do get regular COLAs. These are higher for assistants and associates and lower for full profs.

But: during covid we didn't get COLAs for several years and therefore there are first year assistant profs with salaries close to mine (tenured associate) due to compression.

I am at a SLAC with a 2/2 and sabbatical after every three years of service. We generally have to give up our offices for the leave replacement.
