Teaching outside of law school with a JD?

A JD is often considered a terminal degree (I know, I know, there is an L.L.M...) and in our institution, those holding a JD are treated as doctorate-holding faculty for tenure and promotion purposes. Faculty with JDs teach mostly in our "pre law" majors, the political science and CJ programs and occasionally cross-teach in Philosophy. The programs that are adminstratrively responsible for such faculty,  provide guidelines as to what is considered research for their discipline. Last I heard there was a special section for those with JDs...
