Sorry if there's already a thread about this.

Is it a good thing?

If you are going to listen to them, type them up for a handbook or a book, or share them with others, yes.

I do tape transcription from Zoom for some things; Audacity has better fidelity, I think, but Zoom's usable.

But be sure participants know they're being recorded. In an interactive class, I believe they have to signal consent.

Some setups notify you as you sign on that the session is being recorded, and you can decide to continue the login, or not, at that point, which stands up as consent.

Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Reprove not a scorner, lest they hate thee: rebuke the wise, and they will love thee.

Give instruction to the wise, and they will be yet wiser: teach the just, and they will increase in learning.

I record all of mine and post them on the LMS for students.

At least what we were told is that if the recordings are only accessible to the same students who are enrolled in the class, we do not need consent. If we wanted to use the videos for some other purpose (for example, future classes) then we would need consent.

Honestly, I'll probably try to find a way to keep recording lectures post-COVID. It seems to really benefit my students.

Actually reading posts before responding to them seems to be a problem for a number of people on here...

We are encouraged (but not required) to record our lectures (though we are not using Zoom--we are required to use the LMS or WebEx) for most classes that we are running synchronously, and we post them to the LMS. A couple of departmental classes, we do not record by administrative decision due to the nature of the class.  In one of my synchronous classes, which is a skills-type class, students have said that they are watching the lecture recordings to help with completing assignments. In my other synchronous class, students have said they watch the lecture recordings if they are not able to attend class that day, they have internet connectivity problems and only are able to view part of the lecture, and/or to review for exams.  So, I think there is a benefit to the recording.
