Remind me why I agreed to turn in a journal review due by the end of finals week. What was past me thinking--future Golazo is the one who is going to suffer so go ahead, its going to be fine, what is grading anyways!

Gah. I do this all the time. 0_o
I know it's a genus.

Just ask for an extension (or don't ask and just take it) -- happens all the time. The journal "deadline" is just a suggestion (after all, they get what they pay for). Just please don't do what some reviewers have done on one of our papers and ask for extensions continuously for a *year* (2 months is normal for review in my field).

Turn the review in later, it's not as if the journal editor is going to find another referee who can submit a report any faster, and I say this as a journal editor.

Actually this journal really prides itself on fast turnaround, and as it is one of the top journals in my subfield, I don't want to make the editor mad. The problem is that the paper isn't clearly great or terrible, so this will be a harder review than some. I'll get it done, but past me has some explaining to do.

In that case, just email the editor to ask for a deadline extension in view of finals week. A reasonable person will say yes, and there's no point trying to avoid annoying an unreasonable person.

On a second read, a bit better than I though. Positive R&R done, finals week crisis averted. Now I can spend my energy grading my own students!

As someone who waits on readers' reports, I thank you for all of us.
