From the article: "A survey of California community college students who left the system found that a third haven't returned to college because they prioritized working, 29 percent had trouble keeping up with their courses and 22 percent needed to take care of family members or other dependents".

That 22 percent who need to care for family- how many of those family members have long-COVID? Or lost daycare during the height of the pandemic and now can't find a place to go back to? I'd love to see a deeper dive on the needs of this part of the group.

Any idea on how this number compares to what it has been historically?
It takes so little to be above average.

Enrollment is down at my Midwestern community college and the explanation offered by our president was the higher wages available to young people.

My understanding is the CC enrollments (and to a lesser extent 4-year enrollments) are strongly counter-cyclical, so it is not at all surprising that they are down with near record low unemployment rates.

Enrollment is down at CUNY as well, partly due to infrastructure problems, according to Gothamist.

Just recently, Bronx Community College had to move to remote learning because of persistent heating issues in the buildings.

That's pretty awful.  It looks like they're trying to have school in what almost amounts to condemned buildings.

Isn't that practically a NYC tradition?

And the diverse students don't fit in elsewhere.

And the teachers/profs are terribly underpaid, by are passionate about teaching and their students.....
