Back in the early '90s I worked with a fella who was a openly gay Republican.  He was obsessed with "all the money the Republicans are saving us."  He decided he would simply ignore the numerous attempts by rightwing politicians to severely limit his choices and blackball his orientation so that he could...never could figure out what he was thinking.

I wonder the same thing with AA Republicans.

Perhaps it's a desire to associate with the winners, rather than being seen as a dependent who needs help/protection.

Maybe.  Although it does seem to me the Republicans have been losing a lot lately.

I assumed the reference to "winners" was in economic terms; i.e. people who see themselves as having lots of agency will probably be more conservative than people who see themselves as being at the mercy of "the system".

Actually, I assumed my gay Republican colleague suffered from some sort of denial/ Stockholm Syndrome effect.
