IHE: Long Waitlists for Introductory English at City College of San Francisco

QuoteA dearth of introductory English classes at City College of San Francisco has led to waitlists of upwards of 200 students, some of whom need the course to complete their programs and get their degrees. The college's faculty union is calling on campus leaders to add more course sections and hire more instructors but administrators are concerned the college can't afford new hires.
Come, fill the Cup, and in the fire of Spring
Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling:
The Bird of Time has but a little way
To flutter--and the Bird is on the Wing.

Why do you suppose the adminiscritters are crying poverty here, and do the students have any political advocates who could force the issue?

The students would express themselves more effectively if they had had an English class.

The article is a bit confusing.
QuoteAt least 26 of the 52 English 1A course sections offered for the upcoming fall semester are already full, according to the college's class registration platform, and more courses are sure to fill up in the coming months as more students enroll closer to the start of the semester.

So half aren't full yet, and if "more" are "sure to" fill up, then that implies some will still not fill up.

If the waiting lists are for specific instructors, or certain times of the day, etc., then that's a different issue than just "not enough" sections being offered.

It takes so little to be above average.

CCSF hired a bunch of FT English faculty a few years ago, then laid them all off before giving them tenure. So they don't want to rehire them, but under union rules they can't bring them back as PT faculty.

A few years ago they offered an early retirement incentive. Oh, and huge raises to faculty, 5 more steps on the salary scale, and huge raises for staff. So on top of all that, they have contracts they can't afford unless the unions agree to huge concessions after bragging to their members about these big "wins."

Place is a disaster.
