My spouse and I are thrifty and have had the same sleep number air mattress for close to 20 years.  We're considering getting a mattress topper, but my spouse is a hot sleeper and always has a fan going at night.

Anyone have suggestions on mattress toppers to consider or avoid?  Please post them below.

TV in the 1950s would show that this is a New World Problem.  Then, each had their own bed and there was no need to compromise.
Similarly, we have a Split King (which is 2 long twins, pushed together), so each can adjust anyway that they want and not have to compromise on the position, fight for sheets, blankets, or now, toppers!

At 20 years old, perhaps a new sleep number is in order.
(I dont want to even imagine how many bodies worth of shed skin cells that matress weighs now... and 2 decades of fossilized dust mites.... ewwww)

This is why you also put a mattress pad over the topper - and wash it regularly!  Beds can also be periodically taken apart so that mattresses can be turned, aired out, vacuumed, etc. in order to keep them from becoming a compost heap.

The bed industry these days is an absolute racket.  Seriously, $2k or more for a new bed?  I simply don't see the value.  A few years ago, we replaced our sleep number with a regular mattress and box spring... we paid good money for a top brand and it did not last!  After maybe a year or so, we had two ruts and a huge hump in the middle.  Needless to say, that bed did not stay when we moved across country.  Anyhow, thank you both for comments on getting a new bed, but that's not likely to happen, not even the new sleep number because they require you to use a smart phone instead of providing a remote.  We have also used mattress covers, but I always avoid anything with a non-breathable fabric and none of those are meant to provide cushion like a mattress topper is.

I recently saw that makers of the Moon Pod have a mattress topper but don't want to buy something that will be too hot.  My understanding is that memory foam is usually hot.  Anyway, just looking for something fun to try and am open to suggestions!

I have an old school mattress and box spring that is pretty ancient (20 years +/-? yeah, I know that's gross, but I'm cheap). When it got uncomfortable, I bought a 2-inch memory foam topper from a big box store and it's rather comfy. There's nothing special about it, it doesn't have 'cooling gel' or anything like that, but I've been happy with it. It came with a mattress pad sort of cover for it that I wash regularly. As a woman of a certain age, sometimes I get a bit warm at night, but just fling back the covers if that's the case, haven't noticed that the topper keeps in too much heat to the point where I want to get rid of it. And I sleep in a cold room, always have since I had control of the thermostat.
I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now.
