Interesting how many people see some sort of distinction between "college" and "university", since in the US it seems that people almost universally (in my outsider view) use the expression "going to college" vastly more than "going to university", whereas in most other countries "going to university" would be way more common.

It marks a real difference in Canada. A college is pretty much a community college, a place where you go to earn an associate's degree, or (in some cases) a trade. A university is where you go for the bachelor's, master's, Ph.D., JD, MD, etc.

I've never thought of it marking any real distinction in the US.

And then there is the added complication that major academic units at U.S. universities are formally referred to as "colleges".

For example, College of Education. Or College of Fine Arts.

I vaguely recall reading that many international students were put off by the use of college instead of university.
