I have a job offer at a uni abroad with a good pay package but Glassdoor makes it sound like hell on earth. Any advice?

How many reviews does the place have on Glassdoor? Remember that, like Rate My Professors, there is a strong bias in the reviews - only people who really want to say something will write reviews. In fact, it's worse, since RMP is known to many students, and students who really liked a course will go and write reviews. However, fewer employees know about Glassdoors and reviews, and very very few content employees will take the time to go on Glassdoor to write about their experiences. It is almost only unhappy interviewees and unhappy ex-employees who write most reviews.

This is not to say that they are wrong, however, it is something one must remember when reading reviews on Glassdoor. So, if a company has 4 or 5 reviews and all are bad, I would ignore them. However, if there are 15 or so bad reviews, all which seem like they are from different people, but all which are saying, essentially, the same thing, and there are a number of positive reviews which say "ignore all the negative reviews, they're just bad employees who were fired", I would avoid working there.

When looking at universities, it is mostly staff positions. You can try to figure out how it would affect your work as a faculty member, if you want.
"Just the place for a Snark!" the Bellman cried,

Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.

+1 to what mouseman has said.

You should also check whether those negative reviews specifically specifically for the type of position and for the unit that is relevant to your situation. I work at relatively large (about 30000 students and 4000 staff) uni in Europe and we have vast differences between faculties and departments in pretty much everything except base salaries, to the point that reviews for the institution as a whole would not necessarily mean anything.

Agreed with the above.  Your mileage will vary depending on the position, department, etc.

Out of curiosity: is this position in the MENA/GCC region, by any chance?  I've been working there for over 5 years and might have an inside scoop.
