The reasons are sound for a lot of other things as well. In essence, if you are challenged on something (by a student in this case) the adjudicating body (grade appeals board in this case) will take your side if you followed your own written rules. Even if they think those rules are borderline nuts.

I want to add a note here to encourage people to 'enforce it'. Last term, in an effort to avoid work on my end, especially while dealing with the CV19 issues, I didnt write up and submit an Academic Integrity warning form.  Had I done so, it is likely that the student would have taken the issue more seriously AND the committee would have given a more appropriate punishment with the repeated cheating.

So IF you are faced with a cheating issue, document it and submit it to the body on your campus that houses such things.  Please!!

We can choose to submit as little as a 'written reprimand' but once a cheater has a history with the Integrity office, the punishment for repeated actions ramp up quickly! 

PLAN TO ENFORCE IT!!  (especially cheating or other honesty diversions)
