Does anyone have a clue how status updates on research.gov work ?
I submitted a proposal (to a program without deadlines) about 2 months ago, and it still says "submitted to NSF (not yet assigned for peer review)". I wonder what is going on.

You could contact the PD and let him/her know that your proposal is submitted. Hope you get favorable result.

Where's the patience? 2 months is practically yesterday in NSF time.
When transitioning to no deadlines for small proposals, the NSF put out a FAQ which said that timelines for reviews and decisions remain the same. That means the standard six-month timeframe is in place. The status will remain in that state until it's assigned for review, then it'll go to Submitted to NSF (Due Date Passed or Assigned for Review).
It has only been two months, I wouldn't contact the PD unless there were some prior communication before the submission, but if there were, then I would assume an email would've already been sent alerting them of the proposal. It's practically impossible for a PD not to know there are submissions awaiting assignment and review in their queue.

Thanks aspiring, it was my first time with research.hov, so didn't know how it is supposed to work.

I did have discussions prior to submission with a PD who gave good advice snd was encouraging, but once I submitted, the propsal was assigned to a different PD. i mailed the original one informing him of submission.

Sometimes another PD may have a panel scheduled sooner so it'll get shifted over to them but it can be sent back to the original PD afterwards.
