Employee leasing company in higher ed

Hello All ,

  A small for-profit college I teach at has outsourced all the employees to a Professional employment organization (PEO). There are issues i.e withholdings wrong,etc.

  Some of my colleagues say it hurts morale seeing a PEO listed as employer on the direct deposit pay stub, having to reach out to a call center for help, etc.

  Is this a big deal or are some people being too sensitive?  Would you be annoyed / offended? Admittedly, there are much bigger problems going on there.

I'd imagine morale at a for-profit college is low to start off with. Aren't all the employees keen to get out as soon as possible?

If there are problems with pay checks, the issue isn't morale, it's the worry they are actually going to screw you.

But why are you asking? Is there any way you have any control over the situation apart from leaving?

Everyone that I know who works at a for-profit "university" either gets out as soon as they can, drops out of Academia altogether, or they're trapped for life and become zombies for the corporation.

This is a unicorn day for The Fora. It is incredibly rare for anyone working in the for-profit university industry to ever post here.

But get out of there. Fast.

The job market is extremely strong right now. People wiht talent can do very well. Enployers are freaking out and are having the government cool things down, and that will likely happen in the next few months.

Now is the time to move to an employer that treats you well and compensates you appropriately.

I see many stoies, from instructors at failing colleges to Alabama Amazon workers, who have someone committed themselves to being exploited. Anyone who has a bad deal, and can make a good deal now, needs to do so. The mental shift may be radical and traumatic, but the outomce will be a much better life.

There is a silver lining. If you are at a for-profit college, and the college's name is something you would be ashamed to put on a resume (like UoP), you can instead list the name of the PEO!

I like the idea. Redact dollar amounts and show potential employer a W-2 from PEO. /partial sarc
