How was class attendance on November 27th?

I did pretty decent this morning. I was impressed by how many students showed up for their college educations.

But attendance sharply crapped out after 12:00pm. We're open until 5pm today. All classes before 5pm are expected to be held.

Sometimes I philosophize over peoples' notions that a holiday also includes a preceding "pre-holiday" time period.

I only teach one class on Wednesday this semester (it ends at 4PM), and it had about 40% attendance. I don't really think about it one way or another.

Reasons for my philosophy: (1) missing one day of class is not going to make or break a student's entire college career. The good students will still do good work and the lousy ones will still do lousy work, (2) absent students can get the notes from a classmate if they're so inclined, and (3) there were major snowstorms in my region last night. If some students decided to get an early start on travel for the sake of safety, I frankly think that's a rational decision on their part.

So far, pretty good.

I know, I'm in Canada, so it doesn't count. But until the wee hours of the morning there was supposed to be a full transit strike. Plus, it's their last day of classes. So I think those factors add up to a Thanksgiving weekend-equivalent!

first class: Surprisingly good, over 75%.
second class: Quite low, but it's a gen ed class where I'd made it clear this was an optional topic.
third class: More than half, anyway -- for a developmental class that's pretty good.

Was it because of Thanksgiving? I live in Canada, I have a feeling that nobody really celebrates this here or it's just as huge as in the US...

this year, we had a 'reading day' on Wednesday, so no classes were scheduled!
The campus staff were released at noon, so many were taking days off as early as Tuesday, so they got a long, long time off (or a short week, only working Monday), for the cost of a day and a half of leave time.

A friend of mine used to schedule an exam on that day and then explicitly told the students that it is a regular school day and they need to respect that.

That's the advice I was given as a new faculty member.
