Comedian James Gregory at 78. "The Funniest Man in America" was still touring--and still quite funny.

I saw James Greggory in Florence SC while he was touring.  I enjoyed his humor then.  Wow... That was over 20 years ago, so he was under 60 then.  I would look at his tour page every now and then, but he didnt seem to be where I was, when I was near.

Charles Deyoe, Emeritus Department Head of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University. When I worked with Charlie's daughter, their family graciously hosted me for a weekend at the Kansas Wheat Festival, several Thanksgiving dinners, and an Independence Day cookout and fireworks show. In his 80s, Charlie had a wry humor, a fund of stories about the places he'd visited in his work with the International Grain Program, and a way of coaxing any visitor into helping him bake bread and cookies for the hospice patients he visited regularly. Rest in piece, Charlie.

Clifford Gordon, an associate professor of art at Columbia State Community College in Tennessee, from a freak accident during a study abroad program with students.

I didn't know him personally, but I know some people from Columbia State and across the state who must be devastated. This is the nightmare scenario for any study abroad program.

That's a shocking report.  Was that some kind of freak wave? 

At first I thought it might be about somebody killed in the recent flooding in Rio Grande do Sul.

Steve Albini, engineer of some of my favorite records (the Pixies' "Surfer Rosa," Nirvana's "In Utero," Songs:Ohia's "Magnolia Electric Company"), as well as his own estimable bands (Big Black, Shellac), of a heart attack at age 61.

He was a pretty complicated guy who has owned up publicly to his mistakes. His interviews, particularly in his later years, were great to read, and he offered tips on audio recording on YouTube for free. He could have been a zillionaire if he had taken points on all the albums he's had a hand in, but he felt that it was right to be paid a flat fee, like a plumber.

My cousin, early 40's, apparently died by suicide after a long struggle with mental health and addiction.

I just saw him a few months ago. We went to pick him up at the train station and he was playing one of those free pianos, so beautifully. We talked for a while later and I tried to reassure him that he was on a good path and doing the right things, being so aware of his body and his mind.
