Hope everybody is doing well during this crazy time.

Did anyone hear any news about results of NSF CISE small grants during this year (2019-2020)?

Rewetz

Did you get any update yet? I still have two small (CCF and CNS) proposals pending since mid November. No status update.

mamselle

Am I wrong, or aren't there a couple of threads already started on this??

Wait a minute...

OK, so the Career thread (which has a lot of info on the 2019/20 season) is here:

   http://thefora.org/index.php?topic=654.msg29807#msg29807

and...the Eager thread is here:

   http://thefora.org/index.php?topic=215.msg3055#msg3055

and...this isn't an update, more of a Summer-related questions thread:

   http://thefora.org/index.php?topic=1005.msg19406#msg19406

Only because, if there get to be a lot of threads on the same or similar topics, the aggregate of information is attenuated.

And we wouldn't want THAT!

I don't see the point of posting something like this; the other threads are about completely different competitions, and I don't think there's any issue with people asking about the CISE Small grants, which haven't been covered elsewhere, here.

One of my CS faculty heard yesterday that their Small proposal (CNS Core Programs) has been recommended for funding; they were asked to provide an abstract. It's still listed as Pending in Research.gov, and the status date hasn't changed in a few months. Hope you hear soon (and that it's good news)!

mamselle

Ok, they all have NSF ties, so just checking.

Carry on...

Bumping this thread... This situation is driving me crazy.. my proposal status date for a NSF CISE core program got updated like 20 days ago (probably means that the reviews are in), but still no word on the proposal (the status is pending). Anybody that has received either positive or negative news?

Please help me keep my sanity...

mamselle

This is why the previous thread might be useful.

You could see what good, extensive company you're in...

Unfortunately, the previous threads are related to different competitions/programs.

Yeah, no. I think most people applying for grants are aware that waiting is part of the process and can be frustrating. The specific situation we're dealing with here--which is going on in *this* NSF program, not any of the literally hundreds of other competitions administered by the NSF--is that decisions have not been made by the normal six-month point, so it's pretty understandable that people want to check in about what's going on. (CISE core programs, in my experience, are usually pretty reasonable about wrapping things up on time; that's very much not the case for other NSF programs like CAREER.) This is going to affect how projects can be administered once they are funded; for example, the project I alluded to above has a June 1 start date that is clearly going to be delayed (since we have no notice of award yet).

More generally, as a grants officer, I've generally found threads/email chains/whatever where people can talk about specific competitions  to be pretty useful (and my sense is that faculty do too). Even the conversations where we're all just sitting around going "jeez, when are they going to make a decision" have sometimes been enormously helpful (one such conversation a few years ago tipped me off to a program officer's sudden illness, which made what had been a frustrating delay entirely understandable). Mamselle, I think your advice is coming from a good place, but it also doesn't sound to me like you have deep familiarity with NSF, so I might recommend some forbearance here.

@hazelshade: you are absolutely right. You mentioned that one of your faculty heard back a few days ago. Do you know of anyone that has heard back with a rejection? I am trying to understand if my proposal is on the bubble, i.e., it was deemed to be borderline and the program officer might be looking for money to fund it.

hazelshade

Nope--but my n here is small; we only had two CISE:Small proposals go in this cycle. (Haven't heard a thing about the other one yet.)

A bit more context: just heard from a colleague from my department. They got their CHS proposal declined on June 4.

mamselle

Thanks, hazelshade (like your moniker!

I absolutely agree on the value of these threads.

I worked as an EA for people doing NSF proposals many years ago, so I'm not unfamiliar with their diversity, or the NSF's perspicacity.

And my primary interest was to be sure we weren't getting a tiny strand of a thread going on something that already had a fair bit of heft and weft. (Which happens...)

But I do see your point.

Apologies for the interruptions, and good luck to all going forward.

My CNS Core proposal (submitted in November) got declined a few days back. Haven't received the decline notice yet, but status changed to decline last week on research.gov. Before the status changed to declined (last week), the proposal status date changed (with pending status) nearly a month back (late April). Hope that helps!

Thank you for your response and I am really sorry to hear that your proposal got declined. I was hoping that if my proposal is to be declined (which I believe it may very well be the case) that, at least, I would receive a notification fairly soon after the reviews are in.. For example, if a proposal is placed in the low competitive category, I do not see a reason for NSF to hold on to making the decision official.
