UMASS Lowell is now mostly online, except for a small number of in-person offerings.

As has been the case during the summer, only those courses that must be taught in person, such as labs and studio classes, will continue on campus with most others moving to a fully virtual mode. Further, only students who have to be physically on campus to progress in their education or have extenuating circumstances will be able to take in-person classes or live in the residence halls.

It probably wasn't a great idea to bring college students back a week early with nothing to do and expect them to play flip cup with socially distanced tables.

We are requiring a two-week self-quarantine after coming to the area from states with outbreaks. One group of returning students rented an air-b-n-b for the purpose. The eight of them are not social distancing from each other, of course. How many are on a flip cup team?

It's pretty stupid from an individual standpoint, but from a public health standpoint this isn't so bad.  There's maybe a 20% chance that all of them will get sick.  If any one of them gets sick, they'll all have to stay quarantined, so they won't spread it to anyone else.  Moreover, perhaps the one who started off sick might have stayed almost entirely asymptomatic and gone out and infected a bunch of people after quarantine, but it's pretty unlikely that eight people getting sick would all stay asymptomatic.  It's better to force them to quarantine for 3-4 weeks in these situations, but with 8 people we have probability on our side since it's unlikely all of them will have longer than usual incubation periods.

(Sorry at this point deaths of people doing obviously stupid stuff are just a statistic to me.)
