Tenure officially official as of today's board of trustees meeting-- Even though the final steps were pretty much a formality, some part of me could not quite fully celebrate and relax until now.

Good for you!
Do something to celebrate this achievement.  It is often a let down, so make sure that you reward yourself and recognize and treat the others that helped you along the way.  Your parents and spouse (if you have one) have put up with a lot along the way so take a long weekend and visit someplace really nice and do nothing in particular!  Enjoy an expensive meal!

then get back to work!

Thanks! No time to take a break for the next two weeks (end of the semester + grant review panel), but after that I'll be visiting my parents for a week for Passover, and we'll celebrate then. I already did a fancy celebratory dinner with friends after the non-pro-forma recommendation came in January.

It was nice getting to thank everyone in the lab for helping make this possible. I always buy lunch for the last lab meeting of the semester anyway, but we'll have an extra special one next week.

I will definitely do a trip or two over the summer as well.

And you will cry out on that day because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you on that day.

I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now.

It's been a long time since we've had an "inhale," so here's mine!

I've been granted an ADA accommodation to teach fully remotely for the entire academic year! I didn't even consider making the request myself; I just planned to suck it up, tough it out, and teach on campus as usual, with a few medical days off. (I've vented at length about my injured foot on that other thread.)

However, my college's union president and the NEA's regional director called me on July 29 and said, "You need to apply for FMLA and ADA. There's no way you should be trying to come to campus until your foot is completely healed." (Both already knew about my poor mobility, postponed surgery, etc.) Since the last time I had to deal with HR on a similar issue 5 years ago was a months-long absolute nightmare, I was reluctant to even start the process again, but I did as they asked and filed the paperwork.

Thankfully, this current version of the revolving-door HR staff has its act together, and things went surprisingly smoothly--I had informal approval from my new dean and from the VC of academics (who is usually a real SOB about pretty much everything) by August 5; I completed the paperwork last week; and I got final official approval from HR yesterday. I'm sure my regional NEA director's no-nonsense attitude, along with not-so-gentle reminders of my past experience and the invocation of my willingness to involve legal counsel if needed, went a long way in moving things along quickly.

This is a huge relief, and something that wasn't even on my radar a month ago. It's nice to know that my union is looking out for me even when I'm not expecting it! Knowing that I now won't have to deal with navigating the commute and campus until next August has greatly reduced my stress level. I don't think I even realized how much I was worrying about this.

So, yes, Virginia, sometimes things DO go right, even when we're not expecting them! :-)

Congratulations on getting this to come through!

Last December, I had a partial knee replacement, which went great.  On Tuesday, I had the other knee done and I am even further farther along the road to recover after two days than last time.  I should be able to drive to work in 3 weeks!  That will save  quite a headache.

Congratulations on getting the accommodation needed to give yourself a chance to heal, AmmLitHist!

Glad to hear you're recovering well from the knew replacement, FishProf!

Here's hoping everyone's mobility continues to improve, with minimal paperwork snarls.

Great news--good for you, FishProf!  ALHS had complete replacements of both knees this past year, and he also did very well with the recovery. Glad you're doing so well!

FishProf

Thanks.  It was frustrating spending 6 months with a replacement knee which didn't usually hurt and an unrepaired ne in constant pain.  I was always asking "did I get the wrong one fixed?"   Nope.  They both sucked.

I defended my dissertation last week! The paperwork is signed. All I have to do is submit the final PDF to my university's online repository.
