The beginning of the semester was such that I completely dropped off the September thread, but perhaps October will be different! Come tell us your goals for this month and check in about your daily progress.

A month is a weird goal timeline for me (I have daily goals and, like, career goals - everything else is tricky to figure out because the timing of when I can work on a particular thing depends on things outside of my control, such as how quickly my collaborators do their parts). But, here are some things that are currently in my inbox that I am hoping to finish before the end of the month:
- Send new student comments on draft of review paper
- Send collaborating student comments on empirical paper

I have been promised several other drafts as well, but they are not in my inbox yet so I am not counting them right now. Happy writing to all of us!

Good luck starting again Nonsensical. I'm in the same boat. September was a write off for various personal and professional reasons. So my goals for October:
1) Get coding system organized for collaborative project
2) Deal with difficult revise and resubmit

Heathcliff

I'd like to keep writing (even just a little) every day, and finish a manuscript for submission.

For the month:

  • Finish Book Proposal revisions
  • Write commentary
  • Write one report on my activities
  • Work on Co-Authored Paper 1

Today, however, I need to write that report, because it's due.
I know it's a genus.

Goals for October:

  • Send book chapter back to editor with what I hope will be the final set of revisions
  • Make progress on very difficult R&R, which is due back to the journal at the end of November
  • Make progress on data collection project and accompanying paper. Step one is to get new RAs on payroll and on task
  • Finish putting together survey for new project

Reach goals:
  • Send out survey mentioned above
  • Deal with project that I hate and that I thought was dead, but that has been revived by my coauthor, who is very enthusiastic about this project

Done. Now for other weekend-postponed activities.

I managed to read some new articles and incorporate them into a grant proposal during a lull in office hours. Also, I woke up this morning to find that an R&R I had worked on this summer just got accepted! That was a very nice way to start my week.

Great news.  Congrats!

Congrats! I forgot it was October apparently when I posted in the September thread today, oops.

October goals:

  • Continue working on collaborative project with colleague in my sub-field
  • Work on analysis and manuscript for second half of rejected paper with co-author, add student to our team
  • Finish grant manuscript before the end of the month and submit to target journal

Thank you both! I did some work today to disseminate the work described in the recently accepted paper, and I have decided to count that as my research for the day.

Gave a post-doc feedback on a grant proposal today in preparation for a lab meeting later this week where we will workshop her draft. This lab member is coming from a slightly different background than many others in my group, and as a result is making some unique and exciting contributions to the work. I'm looking forward to hearing what others in the lab will have to say about this draft and potentially to working together on the project she describes.

All kinds of crap intruded, reducing the time I could devote to stuff today. Sigh. I did get a decent amount done on Book Proposal, however. I should be done by the end of the week. Ugh.

I met with the student today who is now joining our writing team for the second half of formerly rejected manuscript. Hu is great and my co-author is excited to work as a trio.

I got another tiny chunk written up and typed in for the book chapter.

Also some PowerPoint pages for theory classes.

Articles are all on hold, although there is an abstract deadline looming that I have to decide about.

I might want to just focus on the book....

M.
Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Reprove not a scorner, lest they hate thee: rebuke the wise, and they will love thee.

Give instruction to the wise, and they will be yet wiser: teach the just, and they will increase in learning.

Congrats on everyone's progress! My post-doc (same one who wrote the proposal to workshop in our lab meeting) also drafted a letter of intent for a different grant, and I gave her feedback on that today. Still super excited about her ideas.
