Oof. This is a hard month. Here are some things I'm working on. I won't make any distinct goals, because I never actually do them, but progress on these things this month shouldn't be a problem:

  • Submit that grant| This will probably happen---I'm just waiting for the external reviewer to upload her report before I press the button on Monday[/i]
  • Create those artificial languages for that simulation| No reason this can't happen; I just haven't sat down to do it yet, and I'll have time for it next Wednesday
  • Review that one paper|This is doable
Here are the challenges. Progress on any of these things would be awesome.

  • Start drafting that big grant that I promised to do during my performance review last month
  • Start revising that twice-rejected paper into the first publeme we're trying to cannibalize from it, along the lines that co-authors and I hammered out back in February, before 2020 really got started
  • Start revising the other half of that twice-rejected paper into the second publeme

It's looking more and more like I'll get the bare minimum done and one of the challenges.

Getting the minimum done is still getting something done! And one of the challenges seems like an extra cherry on top.

I drafted one aim of a grant today. I've also finished the second referee report that I mentioned in the first post on this thread, so that list of things is now either done or on someone else's plate waiting for them to do their part.

Today's the first day of the annual conference (on Zoom). There are plenty of Zoom social events--show and tell, talent show, trivia, drinks--which is pretty awesome. But anyway, all that means that the next few days will be low-productivity. Still, I'll put some work into Co-Authored Paper 1.

Done! It's not much, but it's something.

I finished a big section in the book chapter I am writing slowly (2 hours every Friday) today. Most of today will be catching up on grading, but I'm also planning to apply to two jobs in my field that might have less grading. (I'm so grateful that there are two jobs in my field this year).

I've been sluggish lately, but did some reading the past few days for the book chapter, and will be recording a virtual conference presentation next week. We had a team meeting this week for my co-authored project but the student did not show, and we will not meet until December next. I am still impatiently waiting for the proofs from my two articles due out in 2020, but both editors assured me I did not miss any communication from the copyeditors.

Today, I need to finish Wednesday's presentation.

    Done. Wow, that was quick!

Maybe I can even get in a run-through later today.

I had an unexpected research-related event today. A former masters student of mine who graduated several years ago had worked on hu's first study in the last semester of the program, and I helped hu create a manuscript. Hu presented it successfully at a conference, but it was rejected from three journals so hu put it aside and told me there were no plans to submit it again. A call for manuscripts on this specific topic came through my e-mail last week, so i sent it to my former student. Hu decided to go for it, and today sent me a "final draft" conforming to this journal's guidelines. I reviewed it and made some edits, and hu submitted it! Though we have no idea how this journal will consider it, hu was encouraged. I really want this person to be able to contribute knowledge and hope it works out!

Do you mind identifying the field?

It sounds like something that would more likely happen in the sciences, but I'm interested in the pathways possible if in fact it was in the humanities.

In any case, good to know you can support your student in this way!

It actually is in the social sciences. My field is not related to the research area, and I do not conduct research in this area. However, the former student is very interested in this other field, so we found a way to combine the areas. The journal is not in my field and it was not on our original shortlist of three. Though both are social sciences fields, they are in separate colleges at most institutions (including my own). Somehow, this other field's journal special issue call came through on a listserv for my field, or this manuscript would never have resurfaced. I suppose that is synergistic karma?

That really is cool. Good to know!

Snot so good, but that's okay. It'll percolate overnight and I'll work out the kinks tomorrow.

Recorded a conference presentation yesterday with two colleagues. We did not realize until after we put our slides together than we only had 10 minutes to record! We decided to use our first take. Now I get an international presentation out of sitting in my house. That sure is affordable!

I've been bogged down with teaching-related things and haven't had much to report for this thread recently, but today I commented on a section of a graduate student's paper. I should have some time tomorrow morning to go through another section or two.
